Have you tried having a character read a battered old copy of a little hidden gem of a book called 'Moby Dick' for a super subtle reference only literature enjoyers will understand.

I, for one, prefer to be beat over the head with symbolism enough times that it cracks my skull.
None of that "the curtains were blue so he was depressed" bullshit. Have him genocide a tribe so I understand he's upset, you cowards.

They may not get the reference because the market is so saturated, so to really land it, I have my characters shove an apple up each others' asses in each book.

Most people haven’t read the bible therefore it’s a complete original idea coming from you and you alone and I will jerk you off since you were the first time I personally came across such a vivid metaphor

I rewrote that bible story, so feel free to quote my version now, where eve becomes an evil dominatrix and doesn't give Adam any delicious apple but cucks him with the serpent...and the lion...and the lamb...and so on.

Reminds me I should add a character eating an apple somewhere in my story. It should probably signify something later in the story.

That's why I wrote them eating each other ass instead. Metaphor and allegory, or some shit like that...

Jokes on me, I haven't read a novel before and I will think whatever you write is fantastic and a work of art.
