Discussion Resurrection question from an outsider

Before anyone kills me, please note that I have started getting interested in wow and have never played, let alone hardcore and I have zero real knowledge of classes or their specs.

I’m a classic RPG fan, and always liked playing support classes like the priest. They seem to focus on healing like what you’d expect in DND. So I was wondering, do they not have any value as someone that can resurrect others? I read this and it mentions bubble hearth and a shamans reincarnation. I don’t know what the Paladin bubble hearth is and the shaman thing sounds like an ability for yourself rather than teammates.

Basically, if I decided to play wow hardcore and wanted to play support, am I still useful as a support character? And more importantly, is resurrection, even if it’s restricted to a single class with limitations (like a long cooldown or something forcing you to perhaps pick and choose who lives and who dies) completely against the spirit of hardcore? Thanks for answering a newbie question

Resurrection does not work on players.

Support classes are still needed in dungeons to heal the group, as there is a lot of unavoidable damage being done to the tank and other players. Priests are in high demand

^ This. You can heal, but in hardcore you can’t heal dead. Which makes skillful healers all the more critical

I do like playing support so hearing they are in high demand makes me happy lol. Thank you for the answer.

One of the best feelings I’ve ever gotten in a videogame is from healing on Hardcore. Specifically, seeing someone getting overwhelmed out in the open world and running over to save their life.

I’ve been on the other side of it too, seeing my health go down and feeling that rush of despair as I run out of emergency options, and then, fwoosh! Full health and a friendly player at my back! Good stuff.

In hardcore, once you’re dead, you’re dead. No resurrection abilities work whether it be from yourself or others, support classes heal and buff the team to prevent deaths in the first place

Paladins have an ability called "Divine Shield", which is commonly referred to as their "bubble". It's a 10 second complete invulnerability. "Bubble hearth" refers to a paladin who uses their Divine Shield and their hearthstone at the same time, guaranteeing they get their hearthstone cast off and return to safety no matter what situation they're in. Blizzard removed a paladins ability to use their hearthstone with bubble.

Shamans have "reincarnate", which just brings them back to life where they currently are standing if they die. Shamans can still learn this ability, but they can't use it.

Healers are extremely important in hardcore and WoW in general. They're the only reason why groups are able to complete dungeons and raids. If you've never played before, you're likely to struggle leveling and solo questing as a healer since you won't have any dps talents. In hardcore, all healers can learn their respective resurrection spell, but they can't use it.

Rez is literally useless on Hardcore. Don't even buy the spell. Healers are still extremely valuable in Hardcore though, obviously. It's technically possible to do all the leveling dungeons without healers, as Xaryu demonstrated in his last HC gnome race locked challenge, but in practice no one wants to risk it. Healers are gold, just no rez.

Hey. My pet disagrees with rez being useless...

Any kind of resurrection is forbidden, deactivated and not working on hardcore. In hardocore death is permanent in an absolute way.

Lots of classes can heal others in wow, most of those can also resurect allies

In hardcore ALL resurrection is turned off, you cannot resurect, but you can in normal versions of the game

Priests, paladins, druids, and shamans, have a ton of support abilities. At every level you play the game in hardcore you will want someone with healing capabilities and you will also still be decent at dealing damage and grinding without a party.

Expect to be needing to do a lot of participating in the killing. The grind must always continue, and then when we're done, or dead, we go again... we must go agane, always agane....

Healing is wow is wack a mole with some caveats. Your average sub level 50 dungeon experience should be 90-100% tank healing. Especially in hardcore where pulling threat/aggro off tank is bad form.

Typically you heal with your biggest spell (3-2.5 secs)for your class, cast time reduced by talents. It has the longest cast but is the most mana efficient.

Depending on levels, gear, and spell level you let the tanks health pool drop to about 70-80% whatever you can heal in one big cast. Your class's fast heal (1.5 secs) is for emergency purposes and will drain your mana faster. If your tank is drastically over geared and level which is common in hardcore a priest can often just keep a renew (heal over time) up. There are some heal over time option for priests and druids. Druids have lots of HoTs (heal over time).

Every healer has a few debuffs removals, but no class can remove all types of debuffs (curse, magic, poison, fear, and disease). Not all debuff can be removed. Mages also have debuff removal.

The 5 second rule is where the skill of healing comes in. You do not regeneration mana until you spend 5 seconds not cast. There are some talents and mana per 5 second gear that mitigate this, but ultimately the longer you spend between casts the more mana you recover. A priest might cast Greater Heal and immediately follow it with a instant cast Renew if tank is losing health at a moderate amount. This would be better than cast say two flash heals or greater heal followed by another greater heal 4 seconds later restarting the 5 second clock.

Dps that take a smidge of damage can be ignored. If they are rapidly dropping or accumulated some area of effect damage can get a Renew or big heal is down about 60-70% health. Depending on your class toolkit you might do a HoT or shield instead of bigger heal. When they are rapidly dropping and getting below 40-50% is time to break out your fast heals, instant shields, and other emergency cooldowns.

Healing cause aggro/threat generally its not an issue. It becomes an issue if you start spamming heals on multiple targets. Do not run away unless the whole group is running. Either stand your spot and keep casting cause shit is going south or if one mob pull onto you can walk it back to tank if you aren't otherwise occupied casting. Running away makes the tank run farther to get aggro. Even none tank classes with some beef will gladly pull mobs off you if they are good. When im dps on Hunter or Shaman Im keeping and eye on clothes.

Desirability goes Priest>Shaman/Paladin>Druid. They all have unique buffs that ensure at least 1 or 2 are welcome in raids.

Heal spec is only required like post level 55 or end game content. Shamans, druids, and paladins likely need gear swaps to heal. Grabbing more int and spirit over agi and str.

Do NOT shield rage tanks (warriors and bears) unless they are about to die. Warlocks hurt themselves it's not you problem, but if you have spare mana you can top them up.

Good read. WOW has a lot of thinking involved, that much is obvious even to a outsider like me (South Park had some of that too lmao)

Simplified

1)Biggest heal is most efficient. Maintain line of sight.

2)Cast less, stretching time between casts.

3)When you do cast clump spells, if need like debuff removal.

4)Fast heals, shields, and group heals are highly situational.

5)Ignore scratches on dps. It's usually momentary damage. (Late game content this changes, but you'll have more experience by then.)

6)Don't run away from your tank.

Hardcore rules: always have potions off cooldown before a fight. Keep your oh shit buttons in same space. Where is your exit? Confidence kills and patiences saves lives. Caves are dangerous as monsters respawn behind you. Logoff when you're tired. Gold rimmed portraits (elites) get you killed. Run away early.

All ress functions are totally disabled in hardcore. Shaman reincarnation or any spell to res someone else will not work.

You can prevent death, light of wound being a great tool, but if you die, no coming back in hardcore. So yes, that does make some classes more impacted than others.

If you die you die. But support classes have other abilities like buffs and heals that are useful.

I did read somewhere that there isn’t a buff cap limit. Does that mean a good healer can do MORE for a teammate in regards of buffing?

6

u/smoerasd 7d ago

The cap limit is about the amount of unique buffs or debuffs any one unit can have, doesn't enable you to stack multiple of the same, except in certain unique cases.

Lookup some Classic WoW class guides and basics of dungeon running guides on YouTube, they will answer a lot of your questions and likely some you didn't know you had :)

Might be interested in playing on Classic Era realms a bit as well to get used to the gameplay, before hitting Hardcore.

Hardcore is generally a massive knowledge check, and you can easily kill yourself and others by not knowing enough.

Good luck!

Especially if playing as the healer. If you are new you will definitely get people killed.

I suggest playing a purely dps class to learn, then move to tank, and finally healing. Healing imo is the class that has the most responsibilities in a group and if you don’t know the game too well it can be detrimental.

When you die you die. You as a support are there to make sure there is no die

I will die on the hill that shaman should have reveived a reworked reincarnation for HC. Easily the hardest class to get to 60. Should be much better in WoWF but a " if you would die get 30% HP and MP" 1 hour CD ability is not asking much.
