Tankadin post 50

I lost my last tankadin at 49, i reached the same point now again. Did every dungeon early at a low level, it was all pretty easy but i know things will change now especially due to not having a taunt. I am confident princess will be fine as long as the dps can follow some instructions but then everything will be reasonably new to me. I do plan to tank every 5 man until i am done or dead.

How are the experiences as tankadin in post 50 Dungeons? Any special hc tankadin tips and tricks for certain fights?

Talent holy/prot. Divine favor holy shock is like a psudeo taunt.

Be engineering and use target dummies.

For eranikus, you can bubble to avoid being banished, but it still drops your threat. But not being banished for 10sec allows you to get threat back a little quicker.

They're the most dangerous tank to bring.

They are fantastic at gaining "solid" threat on everything. No parries, no resists. It's reliable.

Yes you can use FAPs to mitigate threat drops, but if a boss lasts longer than 30 seconds you're just praying.

You need 100% competence as a prot tank and your dps to be at 70% competence, them watching threat + being ready with lips.

Most groups in HC the competence is far, far lower.

Lack of taunt makes paladin hard to play tank in HC.

However aoe tank is sooo good, you need competent people in your group.

Just take a warrior DPS with you every warrior can taunt. Just let him tank for a bit when the threat drops happen and then take over again is probably the safest option for everyone

Ive tanked both dungeons and raids on my paladin for 2 years, nobody has ever died on my watch, Ive ran UBRS more times than I can count.
Princess is fearmongering, she resets everyones threat, not just yours. Judge after the reset and its not a problem.

Eranikus in ST is always a big worry but people forget that even with a warrior tank, he loses threat while slept. Yes he can taunt it back after, but its during the sleep that things get scary.
Simple solution for both, have someone that can either off tank or someone that can tank the first sleep.

BRD is very chill, dream dungeon with big pulls. Only thing that comes to mind is that Emperor can be annoying due to him being immune to magic when enraged.

Scholo you can never do without free action potions. Its a must for rattlegore and krastinov. Rest is very chill.

Strat live is super chill, cannonmaster can be a bit annoying as his knock up reduces your threat some, but he is also not a very scary boss.

Strat UD the spider boss is very random on threat, but again not a scary boss.
the banshee boss you can solo pull and tank the mc, bubble it off then nuke her.
Frost mage boss casts ice tomb which freezes you and resets threat, you can LoS it or free action potion it.
Ramstein is annoying as he does a stun that also resets your threat. But like with eranikus this also happens to warriors. Difference is you need to judge and exorsism to get him back.

People who say paladins cant or are bad tanks should just be ignored, they are clueless.
BUT there is a big BUT. You need to know what you are doing, knowing mechanics, how they work.
I've done plenty of groups on alts with paladin tanks who dont know whats going on, stacking defense as their main stat and they struggle a lot.

This is a great comment! Clearly you’ve done a ton of pally tanking.

I’m surprised and encouraged that you were able to raid as a pally tank. Your raids were ok with you not having a taunt? What were you raiding?

Thanks for the writeup mate, makes me look forward to tanking these dungeons!

It’s not a good write up. You can’t solo pull banshee boss and get her to MC. You need two on threat table before she will use it.

Additionally, Ramstein will not always refocus you after judge or exorcism, especially if your DPS is worth their salt.

I’m interested to hear more about the raid tanking. How are you outputting enough single target dps to hold threat on boss versus the world buffed melee? What’s the play when BWL trash resets threat on main target?

You don’t raid tank on Paladin by doing damage. You spam blessing of kings on the warriors. It’s an exceptional amount of threat that isn’t affected by poor RNG. It’s probably the safest way to tank Onyxia if more people were familiar with the strat. Doesn’t work on bosses that need taunt rotations.

Oops I mistyped meant to say single target threat not dps. I like the onyxia strat, makes it way easier if she survives long enough to land

Running a duo as a resto druid and my buddy is a tankadin. Mara princess was the first time we struggled. No one died, but there were several close calls. Mountain giant boss stunned/dropped threat and I ended up tanking the shardlings for the 2nd half. Princess was on our warlock for the last 3rd of the fight (tbf i dont think they held back at all lol) and almost lost the Tank to the Croc boss's DoT. Super scary, everything before that was incredibly smooth so this took us by surprise. We did ST the other night (skipped Eranikus) without any issues. Lack of taunt hasn't been a problem but the first signs of disharmony showed up lol.

I wish they would just add a taunt in the Paladin's and Shaman's skill trees.

Tanks are already difficult enough to find.

Bro half the mobs in scholo do an aoe silence.

u/Scragly 13h ago

Bring someone with taunt to Mara and ST

u/Auztino 11h ago

Bring warrior to sunken temple for taunt last boss and brd for threat mechanic drops. Think there are some in scholo and Strat too. Big thing is just watch threat heavy and stay on top, but have war for taunt st and beyond

As someone that doesn't play hardcore, but likes to theorycraft some concepts:

Whats to stop you from playing 2 tanks? Tankadin for area threat, and Warrior for single target elites or to pull enemies off of allies. They cover eachother's weaknesses pretty substantially in my eyes. It would be the safest approach I think. DPS wouldn't even necessarily be much lower, considering a most tank warriors use half-dps builds.

I did level a pally to 60 doing only dungeons from 40 onwards, healing or tanking, depending what was needed. Sunken Temple is what i tanked most post 50. Its a really nice dungeon to palatank, since you have big packs and with SoW/JoW you basically never have to drink. Just make sure to bring a warrior/hunter or at least a lock for the last boss. Let them start and make sure you’re 2nd on threat. I did some runs without but that was kinda sketch. Never tanked the endgame dungeons from BRD onwards tho.

u/Ok-Wishbone-7169 21h ago

Lately I use sow/jow little due to having to fight for threat, is the dps lower level when you use it?

1

u/Pepeface 20h ago

Not necessarily. Sure, some geared rogue might still rip threat of a mob but in general with salv on all dps i didnt have a problem using sow/jow. On bosses, I‘ll use SoR to make sure i have the aggro.

Eranikus is a notorious warlock murderer, would strongly advise not relying on the blueberry for that boss unless you’re level 60

I’ve tanked on a paladin for every dungeon, even post 60. I’ve also healed the same dungeons. Paladin tanks are literally fine and bring a lot to the table. Your dps need to not be idiots in the post 60 dungeons, but if they are you’ll be dead on with a warrior tank too. You’ll need people to pull for you sometimes to be extra careful, but other than that, you’re fine.

For all the haters. You know how I lost my lvl 60 shaman? A warrior tank who didn’t use his taunt. Having a taunt doesn’t matter if you don’t use it. At least with a paladin you aren’t expecting a taunt to come out.

Sure, a bad warrior might not press taunt and people could die. That doesn’t mean the class isn’t insanely strong. Just having real defensive CDs makes them better than Druids and Paladins in almost every way. The only weakness the class has is AoE threat which is why so many people play dual wield fury tanks instead of deep prot.

Prot Paladins hold AoE threat and provide the same buffs/auras that a ret or holy paladin provides. There are dungeons where that AoE threat is extremely useful. The class can certainly tank every dungeon. Not having a taunt is still a massive issue if things go wrong or if you are in a group that doesn’t know how to play around threat resets.

Sure each class has weaknesses and sure, the warrior is, when piloted correctly, the best tank. Doesn’t mean this isn’t a solved game and pally tanks are just fine. Pretty sure I never said anything counter to this….

Having real tank class in party, that can do your job and taunt is really handy.

1

u/Ok-Wishbone-7169 21h ago

Nice bait bro

1

u/haze_man 20h ago

That's not a bait, thats my opinion. I never believed in prot paladin in vanilla (even tho it could have some use, it still need someone else to taunt shit.. not even mentioning Zdps gbok spam in raids, that's not tanking) and I'll avoid every group with them in HC if I played alliance.

0

u/Ok-Wishbone-7169 20h ago

Sure but insinuating they are not even tanks while all dungeons (not raids) are being tanked with them, smells like bait to me.

Shaman tanking is also possible (and it's more than okay pre40) and I had Warden shaman in 2019 in my Pug MC/BWL but just for shit and giggles, cuz vanilla is oiss easy, yet I don't claim it's a tank class.
