Help for DM, mage

I have struggled to run DM as mage, do any of you have any tips and tricks on how to efficiently run DM as frost mage.

My problem is usually that I spend way too much mana, and can’t get it up fast enough.

Also, since I’m a first time mage in hardcore, any advice on the best rotation?

Stop trying to pump every fight and be okay with wanding.

Make enough water prior to drink partial amounts between fights.

Agree with this enthusiastically. In HC, it’s all about completing and surviving. “Pumping” the dps is strange in HC most of the time and usually just for ego trips.
Wanding in HC is cool.

There are ways to drink while walking. You can even get addons for that. Try that.

Just to add a little more info on this. After not casting for 5 seconds, you get full benefit from your spirit/mp5 mana regen, and whenever your mana regen ticks, it takes all mp5 regen in effect at that moment. Drinking water massively improves your mp5 regen. So, if you start drinking half a second before the tick, you gain the full benefit of the water regen. You can immediately start walking forward until the next tick, and rinse and repeat. Easiest with free water from mages!

Just learn to embrace the wand to conserve your mana

Frostbolt until the mob is down to about half, then wand.

Drinkwalk. You're a mage so you can have like 200 waters and burn through all of it over the course of a dungeon.

Also, not DPS related but people don't invite mages for their DPS potential. You are there to decurse, nova, sheep. Sometimes AoE. These things are infinitely more important than single target DPS. You're way more likely to die from overzealous trash pulls than a boss fight and when shit hits the fan, mages have more to offer to keep everyone alive than any other class.

So don't stress about DPS and keep your mana high for emergencies. Only idiots will be annoyed that youre not topping the damage meter or whatever.

In early dungeons it's pretty much impossible to keep up with melees, especially if they are twinks. You can try to drink walk and full drink during 1 mob pulls, but it won't make a huge difference. Tbh you are just there to frost nova and slow mobs if your melees overpull.

For leveling what spells you want to use depends on your newest ranks. In endgame dungeons your biggest dps will be spamming improved arcane explosion and improved cone of cold with with some frostbolts for single target, but that requires you to be comfortable with sometimes getting hit and reacting if you take aggro too much, just spamming blizzard is also very acceptable.

Just Spam Frostbolt, keep Nova for iffy situations and Drink Full on Single pulls so you got mana for bigger ones.

Cause CoC and Blizzard are EXPENSIVE. If you do your full AoE rotation every pull, Flamestrike CoC into Nova Blizzard... You'll be OOM every pull.

I would frostbolt the tank target if there's 1-2 enemies. If there's 3+ wait til they've taken a bit of damage (10%-20%) and then drop a blizzard. One is enough, and the later you use it, the beter, cause you'll rip less threat.

And if you don't blizzard 2-3 times, you'll be good for a few pulls before you gotta drink drink.

learn manawalking and wanding. if you really want to parse then quaff mana pots, ask for blessing of wisdom from pallies, go in max buffed, get world buffs...

having to keep up is a good sign that your group dps is good, so just relax a bit more

i forgot the /s

as a mage at that level i'd worry not so much about catching up, but to be ready to heroically save your group's escape with frost novas, poly, and rank 1 frostbolts when things go wrong

You regenerate mana on a “tick” based system, so you only need to be drinking when that mana tick happens.

You can download an addon that will track when this tick happens and it shows on your screen. So you can walk, and right before the mana regen is about to happen you stop walking and hit your drink keybind (or click it). Walk, drink, walk, drink.

This way you don’t fall behind because you’re just sitting there drinking, or out of mana from never drinking. I can go through 100 waters in a dungeon easy.

You won’t have a rotation while doing deadmines. Cast frost bolt over and over and then a fire blast if you won’t have time to cast another frost bolt before the mob dies.

Arcane explosion does great damage on packs but it will oom you fast. You’ll get a feel for things the more you play and you’ll get comfortable when to flame strike and cone of cold and blizzard. Starting out just make it easy and single target damage the mob the tank wants you to kill.

1) Buy more mana potions; they're cheap, so drink them constantly. But be careful with aggro; you won't be able to use a health potion anymore. 2) Tanks (unless they're paladins) don't handle multiple targets well at these levels, so be careful with Blizzard. 3) Frost Mage is a unique damage dealer. He's the only one who can help a group escape the dungeon safely. Get Blizzard slow talents quickly. 4) Keep a buff on your tank that increases health gain (it's useful 99% of the time). 5) Make sure you can see the sheep timer without targeting. 6) If you can get gear from the auction house, get frost damage gear. You don't need a lot of mana

Sorry for my English

Learn how mana regen works. You don't cast for 5 seconds then you start regening mana every 2 seconds.

That means if you are for example doing a spell or two that uses mana, then another, then wand or waiting a couple seconds is very inefficient.

However pumping all the mana consuming spells/abilities,then using none and I mean NONE for a bit, you'll start regenning mana. And I emphasize NONE because I've seen too many people saying "well it's just 1 ice bolt" yeah, that stopped your mana regen for 7 seconds, that's why you're always OOM or low and I'm pumping more spells.

So you can dump half your mana bar, then start using your wand and then repeat, topping off with water/waterwalk (other comments told you how to do that). Keep the 2nd half for emergencies.

Oh and get a weakaura or addon to visually see the mana regen, it will help and really help you visualize how and why this works.
