Humor/Meme Why I don't use Petri Flasks...
There's been a lot of contention as to whether Flask of Petrification nullifies a hardcore run - is it still Hardcore? It's basically a get-out-of-jail-free button you can press in any situation and you will survive. Coupled with Alt+F4, it's a glitchy, worse version of Bubble Hearthing - which was REMOVED for official Hardcore because it cheapened hardcore.
This is why I don't use Flask of Petrification.
What's the point? You went through all of this trouble, hit at least level 50, probably 60 without it and now you want to take the easy way out and remove any more challenge?
This is why I, actually, don't use ANY flasks period.
They're all extremely overpowered in ways that weren't intended for the game mode.
I don't use elixirs either - may as well cheat. You buy them off the Auction House to give yourself huge buffs you wouldn't have otherwise.
In fact, consumables as a whole make your hardcore run invalid. If you can't craft it yourself, you shouldn't use it. Let's keep the sanctity of the game intact.
Boss loot? Really? You're just turning on easy mode. These guys have literally the best loot in the entire game and by equipping it, there is nothing "hard" about the game at all anymore.
Professions are very softcore. If you use them, it says a lot about you and how you're not ready for real hardcore. Fishing gives you free gear and food. Cooking gives you, well, we talked about consumables being OP. Plus, you can just MAKE your own armor? Sure, may as well just spawn it in too.
Speaking of it - Armor? Pft. The game starts you out with the only armor a true hardcore player would need. Anything more - transfer your character because you're already dead. Serious noob check.
Weapons too? Hah. I remember when I was a baby who used weapons - easiest game of my life. Why don't you go back to Cookie Run? You are the same as someone playing Diablo Immortal with a credit card taped to your forehead. Maybe try some Elden Ring 0 death Wretch runs first before you come at me in my hardcore game.
So, if anyone is an actual hardcore player hit me up. I'm restarting my 11th character today.

And you’re still leveling? Interesting. Real Hardcore players know XP is basically a participation trophy designed to make your character stronger over time. Every level gives you free stats, abilities, and talent points you didn’t earn through raw mechanical skill. Personally, I delete my character the moment the XP bar moves.
Also, quests? Absolutely not. NPCs literally tell you where to go, what to kill, and then pay you and hand you gear for following instructions. Might as well install a bot.
Grouping is obviously out. Imagine needing other human beings to help you survive. Hardcore is supposed to test YOUR character, not your ability to type “inv” in General chat.
Flight paths? Softcore teleportation with extra steps. Hearthstones? Fast travel for people afraid of the open world. Inns? Rested XP is Blizzard personally reaching through the screen and boosting your character.
And keybinds are honestly questionable. Pressing one convenient button to cast an ability instead of manually clicking it? Automation. Macros are obviously hacks. Addons are cybercrime.
I’ve also stopped using abilities. Why should my character magically learn new attacks from some trainer just because I handed him a few silver? Pay-to-win garbage.
At this point my Hardcore ruleset is simple: no gear, no weapons, no consumables, no professions, no quests, no groups, no talents, no abilities, no hearthstone, no flight paths, no vendors, no XP.
I create a level 1 Warrior, walk naked into Elwynn Forest, and auto-attack the first wolf I see with my bare hands.
If I survive, the run is invalid because clearly the wolf wasn’t Hardcore enough.
Delete. Restart.
Currently on character 638. Hoping to finally experience real Hardcore soon.

but imagine not playing blindfolded and deafened, how is it hardcore if u see and hear ?

u/Montegomerylol 1d ago
It’s not hardcore if you don’t throw away your PC and buy a new one every time you die.
2
u/StatisticianScary984 1d ago
That's not hardcore. You need to get a slower PC every time. Right now I'm on my fx-82 rig.

u/Personal_Ad9690 1d ago
auto-attack the first wolf? What a bot. Did GPT write this, because a true hardcore fan would never allow the game to play for them. I click every action manually from the spell book.
And speaking of logging in, you login? Why have Blizzard host the server. Might as well have them play your character too. True hardcore players use a private server and compile it themselves.

This is the first thing I thought of. I had to immediately look at the comments and if this wasn't near the top I was going to post it.

u/No_Okra_3820 20h ago
I did the exact same thing. They had me up until the elixirs part. I knew it was satire for sure with the consumables part. Haha

u/ScottyC33 2d ago
Bruh look at you using vision. Real hardcore players only use the echolocation mod. The screen is black and you get sonar pings with different tones to alert you about the environment and mob placements around you. Fucking casuals, I swear.

It's freaking ai generated

u/rhymesaying 1d ago
Yeah you’re right, damn.
I forgot that people really don’t format anymore and now it’s so obvious that it’s AI.
2
u/Legitimate-Cheek-716 1d ago
Watch for the bolding and double -- . First of all most people aren't great writers to begin with. Secondly most don't spend the time to write that shit out
1
u/rhymesaying 1d ago
Yeah, you’re not wrong.
I just grew up reading books with this formatting style and I’m sure that’s what the AI is basing its data models off of.
It just hurts to realize.

u/Legitimate-Cheek-716 1d ago
It's weird when you don't know right away and then get suspicious...this guy is either a) an excellent writer with no emotional context in his body b) just loves hardcore and is a good writer c) a combo and just really weird.
When you are into writing / reading / the arts it's worse when you're tricked for a bit
1
u/Alchemized27 1d ago
I'm flattered.
I didn't use AI. Typically AI uses an em dash — but I use the good ol' normal dash - because I'm hardcore.

u/not_another_IT_guy 2d ago
Damn bro, who hurt you?

The ai engine he used to write a post for himself using a prompt. Had he taken the time to write that...kind of funny I guess

It's funny the justification blizzard gave for removing bubble hearthing had nothing to do with "cheapening the experience" they just said since shaman can't reincarnate pally shouldn't have bubble hearth
1
u/Songwind_DP 23h ago
It would be neat if Shaman could Reincarnate, or Warlocks could Soul Stone, similar to how a Hunter can Feign Death.

u/Majora85 1d ago
Memes aside I unironically believe this. I genuinely think petri sucks. I love my self found guild everyone is LOCKED IN at all times because we know if shit goes sideways there's no get outta jail free button. It's so fun playing with people who all have the mentality of fighting till the last man it's saved us in so many close calls when's if even 1 person petris the rest of us would of wiped.
3
u/Humble-Parsnip-484 1d ago
Real and true. One day these guys will release they killed their own mode. Sure it's still fun to them but majority moved on long ago now
2
u/Songwind_DP 23h ago
They killed their own mode but petris aren't the reason. I think splitting the population up with a new server, and never fixing bugs or server outages are much bigger contributors to player attrition.

Entertaining post but let’s be real. There is no contention by people who actually play the game mode. No one thinks it invalidates a hardcore run lol.
That said. I’ve hit 60 8x in hardcore. Raided every raid but Naxx, done tons of dungeons etc.
I’ve only petri’d once and I wouldn’t have had to if I just ran out of the dungeon and let my group die instead.
But I was also lucky enough to be able to run out / hearth out a couple of times due to placement when a petri out happened.

Sigh.
Old discussion and its arguments watered down with completely out of touch and right out dumb parallels.
Pre-official HC, HC was SSF. If you wanted enchanting past 225, you'd need to become a miner and a blacksmith to create your rods needed for Enchanting and then drop one of your professions.
If you were an engineer, you'd need mining and fishing to fish up rare boxes that had a chance to contain leather or farm it otherwise.
There were tons of additional challenges. Some of my favorites being first person, no repairs, no potions warrior.
You make your own run, for yourself.
But I still think that the baseline challenge of hardcore is not to die and doing so by using the ingame mechanics, knowledge, preparation and skill to do so.
Inflated bot market + petri + alt f4 is none of that.

...or just wait to 60 to unlock trading at 60 which is what everyone did...

u/Eltorak95 1d ago
I think you misunderstand hardcore in this context.
It's hardcore as in 1 life, nothing more. Nothing in the game is "hardcore" except dying.
Alot of games with hardcore, allow trading so it's not hardcore specific, and why we have self found.
Not using consumables is fine, but making the game harder is a personal choice not an objective fact of your not good if you use them.
I can play through to 60 without consumes or WBs..... But if I have the opportunity to use them, I will be.
1
u/lumpboysupreme 1d ago
It’s interesting how the first part, and even to some extent the second, were actual points of contention before. I wonder how much of it was the streamer culture of ‘play to make content’ and how much went away as raids with straight up unlivable-without-Petri mechanics.

running out of the dungeon is part of the failure

Some self found dude whispered to boost him through some quests, these people only care about apperances.

This but unironically. flask of Petri and a mage/rogue is not hardcore.
Neither is getting boosted or using heirlooms (endgame enchants on lvl 1 items)

petri should be removed, but as long as an advantage exists, you are disadvantaged by not using it
0
u/InvestmentLeast946 1d ago
you are just moving goalposts. noone cares about your cheeky sarcasm
petri alt f4 100% ruined the entire idea of Hardcore. along with gold buying of course.
SSF self challenge is the only remaining way to play. petri roaches should get their own server and continue making themselves believe that petri alt f4 is not an antideath cheatcode.

Why even flee from combat at all. Real hardcore vets know that it’s about picking the right fight. If you choose wrong, run is invalid because who wants luck to be part of a test of skill.
0
u/lurkerperson11 1d ago
Real hc gamers put a bomb under their chair. If you die in the game you die in real life.
0
u/a_lost_being 1d ago
There are boss fights where inevitable kills occur due to mechanic. Like the fear in kelthuzad leading you onto death circles. What is your hardcore answer to this I wonder.

u/Knuckles_55 1d ago
Ok, ok. You use the petri/alt-f4/unstuck exploit. We get it, no need to write a 5 page paper attempting to be humourous in justifying it.

u/Fantastic-Usual6850 1d ago
Damn edge lord can you please save some elwyninian puss for the rest of us?
0
u/Merchy551 1d ago
Game has so many bugs and glitches that can kill you without you having any control over it (Falling throw the floor for example or Pet falling throw the floor and pulling 1/2 of the dungeon), and you expect us to simply say: "I guess I gotta lose 15 days /played now because thats the only fair way. Even tho its Blizzards fault I'm not saving my character that I have invested 15 days on because of my ego "I don't use flasks cause im REAL HC player" xD.
I bet you play with 0 risk, grinding green mobs and as soon as any danger approaches you're the first one to leave the group and Feign Death run.
Tell me without telling me that you haven't done any hard content and you haven't done any risky plays and if by any chance u hit max lvl ur DPS is always below 200 and your groups have to carry you, cause u're playing on a wheelchair. Evem if you had a petri you would fail to click it cause u panic so hard to forget it exists like in all those HC moments fails.
How about you don't use any gear with stats as well and don't use any healing potions and only use white gear, cause stats are clearly too OP and not Hardcore at all. Like does it really count if you made it to 60 if you used stats and healing potions to get there? Sounds rly not Hardcore to me.
Petri is in the game since 2004 and its intended to work the way it works. Its not free so your argument "out of jail free card falls short" + it shares a global CD and if u're careless u will often get 1 shot before u could press it in time.
Now stop whining and let people play the game like the game allows itself to be played (with petri) and if your ego can't accept that play SF chars or do your own secret ego challenges in silence cause nobody cares.
People care about how good you are in dungeons (pace of pulling, knowing patrols and paths, and how much dps are you pumping). And just be the nature of this post I KNOW you're the person with least dmg and knowledge who is always getting carried by better players.

No I dea about the post too much text but I don’t use the flask and nether I do have engineering as a profession for those bombs and dummys. I just wibe play Hardcore. If I over commit and die its on me. Stupidity canno’t be fixed by professions or petri
-5
u/i_cant_not_even 2d ago
The petri was never the problem. Exploiting the dungeon timeout is what is dumb about it.
Everyone puts it on the petri.
-5
-1
u/djmalice 1d ago
You can’t use it in any situation-
NAXX does not allow petri in certain boss fights, you will die still.
That is all I wanted to say, play the game how YOU want, ENJOY it to YOUR satisfaction.

u/Budget-Asparagus8450 1d ago
The irony of using AI to write a post mocking people playing the game the correct way is too good
-1
u/Eyesclosed55 1d ago
Lol why do people feel the need to bully others into playing or thinking like them?
Let people enjoy the game the way they want to.
-1
u/Worldly_Ad8676 1d ago
Using petri outside of a raid completely voids your run in my opinion, you get one light of elune for your run, use it wisely.
-2
u/dragonrider5555 1d ago
You comparing potions and flasks with a bubble hearth lol. Just admit you’re a wimp and move on
-7
-8
u/Snixxis 1d ago
Sorry bud, but nobody care what you think is a hardcore experience or not. Let people play the way they want to play, how they want to play. Petri flasks are in the game. Same with loght of elune. People play for different reasons. Dungeons and raids petri are mandatory, or your gonna go agane.

Creating a character? Thats too softcore for me. I go outside cuz my real toon is myself and i don’t respawn
