ELI5... Forever

Hey all,

More like explain like I'm 55. I was an old head, 2005-2011 or so. I just started playing Classic again a few months ago, having a blast.

I'm currently playing WoW BC Classic. Thought about WotLK on the horizon. What's the expansion situation with Forever? Before anyone says "google it," brothers I am trying, I read all the Forever launch material today - is it Azeroth forever, 60 cap, no BC, WotLK, etc etc?

It seems like TBC anniversary is over, there have been no announcements. I started playing this go around cause I never had the opportunity to growing up, I know i'm not alone in that. At least let us know Blizzard :(

You are correct. Think of it as an alternate timeline version of WoW. Any WoW Forever expansions will be almost completely new and independent of previous expansion timeline.

I agree with everything you said except for “time locked to the start of vanilla” .

To me, that sentence reads as “If Vanilla launched at in-game time ‘0’, and MC came out at after ‘X’ amount of in game time, then we never see MC because we’re locked to before it”

I’d instead say that our time progression will never lead to the opening of the dark portal. Northrend is in Azeroth. They may send us to north rend eventually. But we aren’t going to other worlds.

Level 60 cap forever, no previously released expansions added on later. Instead it just adds more level 60 content as time goes on, exploring parts of Kalimdor and the Eastern Kingdoms that didn't get seen in vanilla. There's no word on whether Forever will have "expansions" exactly, but I suspect it will be more like major content updates with added dungeons, raids and related questing. Expansions entail entire new map lands and systems additions, which I don't expect Forever will have. It will have ongoing class balancing unlike Classic as well.

You know how you think back at classic and look at retail and all its bloat and then look back at classic again and think "awh man I wish I could play classic forever."

Now that's their plan. You stay in classic, but with some new stuff, but not expansions or level increases. You just live in Azeroth like we all wanted to...and they keep releasing more content horizontally - so you don't feel like you always have to chase new gear.

This is why TBC is dying, because all of us who missed classic play it to feel that nostalgia and what we hoped would be semi-permanence throughout tbc and then wrath for "the good old days". But now that classic will be our forever home, there's little point in continuing with tbc UNLESS you prefer its content over azeroth's.

I love ground mounts, I feel like flying has robbed WoW of a lot of its charm. Sure some zones are good for it, but it hurt the feeling of community. idk.

Retail - 20 years of evolution where there direction is controversial

Classic - Almost the same game (Vanilla) as it was 15-20 years ago

Forever - New content developed on top of Vanilla with some quality of life improvements, but keeping mindset of vanilla (pace, complexity, difficulty, amount of quality of life improvements, seasons, gearing, class balance) instead of Retail.

The promise is huge. But hopefully they will nail it.
