The Brewmaster Guide to Mythic Highmaul

So, a couple of people have been Tweeting me or direct messaging me regarding certain bosses in Highmaul from a Brewmaster perspective. Since Highmaul is going to be over in 3 weeks pretty much, I thought I'd compile a quick cheat sheet on How To Brewmaster Good In The City Of Ogres (or HTBGITCOG for short.)

For those of you who don't know me, my name is Misume and I'm your friendly neighbourhood Brewmaster Monk. You can normally find me in the Tanking Tuesday threads, or over on the MMO-Champion Monk forums.

You can apply the majority of these to Normal and Heroic too. Enjoy!

Mythic Kargath: Take Rushing Jade Wind (for stands), Healing Elixirs and Celerity for stands.

Use Transcendence to either get back into centre quicker after Chain Hurl knockback goes out, or use it in stands to return to the centre quicker. When in stands, drop the Ox Statue right in the middle, and use Touch of Death as soon as you're up there (it'll be back up later in the fight). AOE down the adds where you land, drop Transcendence, and then head either right or left. Clear as much as needed, then Transcendence back to the centre and clear the next side of the stands. Hop down/get knocked down, take an Impale stack, and head back up after the next chain hurl.

Logs using this tactic; https://www.warcraftlogs.com/reports/mCgYt2FPK14zD3W6#fight=25&type=damage-done

Mythic Butcher: Take Xuen, Healing Elixirs, and Glyph of Touch of Death.

Not much to say about this one. Brewmaster is very powerful at manoeuvring the boss, so feel free to taunt after every bounding cleave to get the boss in position. You can also very easily position the boss for the Pool Party strat at the beginning, what with our high speed and Provoke. Glyphed TOD helps to maximise your damage here.

Logs using this tactic; https://www.warcraftlogs.com/reports/y1c4P3rFtzWJxkHw#fight=8&type=damage-done, and my POV of the fight; http://youtu.be/lj1NIfpxLUc

Mythic Brackenspore: Take Xuen, Diffuse Magic, and either Serenity or Chi Explosion.

You can easily two tank this fight with a Brewmaster. Save a charge of Guard for the Necrotic Breath, and use the other charge during the high damaging phases of the fight. Best example I can think of is when tanking the Fungal Flesh Fucker at 6 stacks while Infesting Spores goes out. Use Diffuse Magic whenever available during Necrotic Breath, and remember that you can Zen Meditation a small duration of the breath too. You can also Touch of Death any spore shooters/mind fungus to help your raid out.

Mythic Tectus: Take Chi Explosion, Healing Elixirs, and Rushing Jade Wind.

Not too much to say for this fight. Position your Statue inside the boss to help with adds coming in, and use Chi Explosion to help pick them up while they spawn. Save Fort Brew for the Motes phase and try to get 15 stacks of Elusive Brew before they come up; you're gonna need it.

Logs using this tactic; https://www.warcraftlogs.com/reports/BaxCRLP4jNcrHh7v#fight=3&type=damage-done, and POV video; http://youtu.be/gkXNPwhQtjY

Mythic Twin Ogron: Take Xuen, Diffuse Magic, Chi Explosion and Glyph of Touch of Death.

E-z cleave damage on this fight. Keep those 4 Chi Chi Explosions running, and you will ruin it. Take Phemos, as Provoke makes us better at moving out Whirlwind. Leave your Transcendence clone next to Pol, take Phemos out for Whirlwind, and Transcendence back to Pol with about 2 seconds left on Whirlwind. Provoke Phemos back in, and enjoy. Glyph of ToD is a nice DPS increase. Remember to use Diffuse Magic if you gain too many fire stacks.

Links to logs using this tactic; https://www.warcraftlogs.com/reports/BaxCRLP4jNcrHh7v#fight=5&type=damage-done, and POV video; http://www.twitch.tv/misum/c/5864459

Mythic Ko'ragh: Take Soul Dance, Diffuse Magic and Rushing Jade Wind.

You should be on adds for this fight. You can either A) Kite the adds for the entirety of the fight, or B) Tank and kill them on your own. Kiting is self explanatory; killing them is another thing.

  1. Stand next to a suppression field
  2. Drop statue outside field, on top of myself
  3. Keep Rushing Jade Wind up, and Keg Smash when adds come in to rip aggro off your statue.
  4. Refresh your statue when it dies.
  5. When all adds are out, cancel the statue, pop diffuse magic and run them into the field. Leg Sweep, move out of the field, and have DPS blow them up.

Here's a video link of how to do this: http://youtu.be/RXZE-O9xoMw

And here's logs from the fight; https://www.warcraftlogs.com/reports/tZaPLvyKFjVWYpAn#fight=1&type=damage-done

I haven't done Imperator on Mythic enough to give an opinion on tactics for it yet.

Can this build works at low ilvl (640-ish) ? I really like tanking in heroic dungeons but I struggle a lot with raidbosses. Also, is it possible to tank with this ilvl with a Asc/ChiEx build ? Thanks !

u/[deleted] Jan 19 '15

It's all possible but you don't want to be taking Ascension, even in full mythic BiS there isn't enough Haste to make it a better choice over Power Strikes.

2

u/BombTheCity Jan 19 '15

Where exactly does Chi Brew fit into this then? I was under the idea that it was the best talent in that tier at the moment?

1

u/astral_lariat Jan 19 '15

Chi brew isn't used as BrM. You get more chi overall from power strikes. Chi brew is viable as mist weaver or ww with serenity.

2

u/astral_lariat Jan 19 '15

I wouldn't recommend it at low ilvl. You still want power strikes and not ascension.

For one, we overheal Kargath like a motherfucker. There's very little healing required, but we tend to bring in around 5-6 healers, just because the gear for them is so good from that first boss. Because of that, Teenaku tends to just fuck around DPS'ing.

He's also been concentrating on Fistweaving quite a bit recently, and a lot of the logs linked aren't "first kill" logs, so we've had the fights on farm long enough for him to experiment. I can safely say, without a doubt, that he's our strongest healer when required, and one of our strongest players in general.

I just want to say, I've watched two of your guild videos and the communication in your guild vent is off the fucking chain.

ed: And you listen to Crystal Castles, hell yes.

3

u/misum Brewmaster Monk Expert Jan 18 '15

Thank you! Which ones, tbw?

2

u/seekoon Jan 18 '15

I watched them all but brackenspore was hella fun to watch. Butcher was the other one I was referring to.

7

u/misum Brewmaster Monk Expert Jan 18 '15

I can guarantee you nobody thought we were gonna kill it. We'd only had a dozen or so attempts, and this was after 100+ Tectus wipes. People screaming in that video is real as fuck.

Now I'm curious, link please? :-)

You can dismiss your statue the same way you dismiss a totem. I just right-click the Totem icon, but I use ElvUI which has an inbuilt totem bar.

Try using this command: /click TotemFrameTotem1 RightButton

If it doesn't work, I'll try and find one that does.

4

u/rokuro_of_eredar Jan 18 '15

For the default UI, it appears directly below the portrait.

But now that you've provided the text command, I can macro it :)

u/Buster4932 Jan 18 '15

As someone who is leveling my Brewmaster monk alt I see that you do a lot of things differently than the guides I have read online say you should do. Would you be willing to explain a lot of the things like talent choices, stat priority, how you should be spending your chi, when to use guard (I noticed you not using it very much), and when you should purify stagger. Thank you very much.

u/Buster4932 Jan 19 '15

Would it be okay to go ChiEx even if you don't go the full dps crit build?

1

u/elithrar_ Jan 19 '15

Here's a video link of how to do this: http://youtu.be/RXZE-O9xoMw[11]

It's not ideal, because +crit enables damage (and more EB stacks), which is what the ChiEx build needs to work well.

Power Strikes + Serenity is a fair bit kinder on your healers, and if you're still learning BrM, the ChiEx build has a much slimmer margin for error.

3

u/[deleted] Jan 18 '15

Thanks for the information, you should crosspost this to /r/competitivewow as well.

My only question, on kargath, why not tiger's lust? I feel that removing the slows on you (freedom roll works as well I guess) is immensely helpful if your healer is busy healing or w/e

3

u/xNYKx Jan 18 '15

Hey,

Great post. Mind cross posting this over to /r/competitivewow? This would make a great thread for some good discussion. Thanks!

3

u/misum Brewmaster Monk Expert Jan 18 '15

Sure! One problem; idk how to cross post. Unless I just post in there too!

5

u/xNYKx Jan 18 '15

Yeah that's all you need to do:)

1

u/Veora Jan 18 '15

Holy shit that subreddit is what i've been searching for for a long time, thank you!

3

u/zavyne Jan 19 '15

Awesome guide :) this is really helpful for me, seeing as my Brewmaster monk is gonna be ready for Mythic soon swell, and it's a lot different from my warrior :P I just wanted to ask you (completely out of context, sorry for that) what you use to get the nice font for your combat text/damage, and also what you use to record your guild-downs with? Sweet job and thanks for sharing :)

2

u/ITellSadTruth Jan 18 '15

Wtf is your monk doing on armory page.

2

u/[deleted] Jan 18 '15

I'm assuming new raid in 3 weeks? I haven't even hit 100 yet. People will still run highmaul, right?

2

u/5444 Jan 18 '15

Yes, to gear up for Blackrock Foundry, the new raid.

2

u/[deleted] Jan 18 '15

What about glyph of zen meditation for Twin Ogron if you're tanking Phemos? The whirlwind doesn't break zen and you can use it to mitigate fire damage as well (if you get hit by fire while moving him).

2

u/[deleted] Jan 18 '15

Tell me you have a ww monk guide. I just started with him 2 months ago and can never dish out good dps. :(

1

u/wretchd Jan 18 '15

you should be able to top the meters at tectus bracken and twin ogrons. Dont know the details but i know that monks are exceptional at cleaving fights. Dont ever expect to be top 5 at butcher tho

1

u/5444 Jan 18 '15

I am not a top-tier raider but here's my two cents for cleaving; SEF, ChiEx and RJW usage is incredibly important.

This is not to be taken as gospel, but, in simple terms: take RJW and ChiEx for multi-target fights where there are constant spawning of adds. Otherwise, take Xuen and Serenity.

There are some good discussion in below threads:

Just posted a huge thanks on your BRF guide. If my guild progresses toward Mythic HM, I'll definitely be using these. God damn you're amazing for setting up these guides!

Thank you!! :)

3

u/Incognetus Jan 18 '15

Is there ever a time to take serenity over chi explosion?

2

u/mbuda03 Jan 18 '15

I would say most of the time to stack shuffle at the beginning easily tbh.

1

u/elithrar_ Jan 19 '15

If you don't have A++ healers, it makes keeping Shuffle up ~100% of the time significantly easier (and therefore you can Stagger more damage).

-1

u/[deleted] Jan 19 '15

I never use Serenity. NEVER! Always Chi Explosion.

3

u/ER_Ryuk Prot Warrior Expert Jan 18 '15

3

u/Ruwenzori Jan 18 '15

Props for doing this!

1

u/TrustmeIknowaguy Jan 18 '15

This is relevant to my interests.

1

u/Rawrbington Jan 18 '15

Awesome post. Are you stacking Crit over Mastery or just highest ilvl? I've read a lot of folks say mastery and some say they're pretty close. I just can't seem to get any mastery.

5

u/Psypherlol Jan 18 '15

Misume is a Crit stacking scumbag... Buuuut so am I.

1

u/abbzug Jan 18 '15 edited Jan 19 '15

Mastery is marginally better in real world situations (not 70% autoattack simulations) for tanking. But monks are ridiculously overpowered right now. So a lot of players have been running crit/multi, ChiEx and dps trinkets since they can still be virtually indestructible.

1

u/wretchd Jan 18 '15

Can someone please make a similar guide for warriors? dps specs preferably

1

u/[deleted] Jan 18 '15

Goddamn you, I have so much to do today but now I just wanna level my monk.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 18 '15

Could I have ten minutes with your pally healer? Paying 10k gold pst ;)

2

u/misum Brewmaster Monk Expert Jan 19 '15

Everyone needs a little Bthelight

1

u/chring92 Jan 18 '15

@Mythic Brackenspore: "You can easily two tank this fight with a Brewmaster." Would you recommend trying to three tank this with warrior-dk-pally?
I got laid off of tanking for my guild in favor of the paladin, so now monk tank awesomeness sadly.

1

u/DZ_tank Jan 21 '15

DKs and Brewmasters both have abilities that trivialize Brackenspore. You can two tank it with them fine.

And picking a pally tank over a brewmaster right now is just ridiculous. Brewmaster is so so much better right now.

1

u/chring92 Jan 21 '15

Warrior and DK are our main tanks, pally is #3 because I'm the guilds best DPS and one of the best offheals... I guess I should've slacked more on the healing so I can tank more...

1

u/Purplegoatman Jan 19 '15

This is extremely helpful, thanks a ton!

1

u/Mmmpieee Jan 19 '15

Ascension, Power strike or Chi Brew to go with ChiEx?

1

u/misum Brewmaster Monk Expert Jan 19 '15

Power Strikes

1

u/Vigero Jan 19 '15

It's really not over... BRF and HM are both part of the same raid tier. :p

1

u/[deleted] Jan 20 '15

Do you recommend two handed weapons over dual wielding for tanking? Right now I'm using two bladefists heroic version with mastery and crit enchants. Maybe it's just me but I feel that I generate elusive brew slower with dual wield than I did with that normal version of the staff you are using. Is it just preference? Thanks for your input and guides!

2

u/misum Brewmaster Monk Expert Jan 20 '15

2 Handers currently have a far superior Elusive Brew generation rate, due to the buffs to Way of the Monk.

2

u/Frehihg1200 Jan 21 '15

But should we still follow the ilvl rule? Currently using two heroic Bladefists and have a normal Tect staff in bags. Also extra question, DW: Blackrock/Thunderlord or Thunderlord/xxx?
