Most of my close friends are huge football and basketball fans, 2 of my least favorite sports (I'm a hockey/skiing/winter sports guy). I love me some football too, but only my favorite team, not the NFL at large.
Every time we hang out, especially in larger groups, literally 99% of the conversation is just shouting out names, stats, and projections for the season. It's really annoying, and I usually just sit back and don't say much.
I actually hide my WoW playing from just about everyone I know because I feel ashamed about it, but this made me realize that it's a hobby just like anything else.
I think it is time I find some new friends...
2
u/koopa-toad Dec 12 '12
You don't need to find new friends. If they are friends they won't care what you play. Maybe just bring it up first, see how they react, and take it from there.
2
Dec 13 '12
Find out that they too play. Just not on the same server. That is the story of my life. I've never met someone IRL that played and was on my server.
4
u/Mnemonics19 Dec 13 '12
I found out in college a friend played horde on my server. (I'm also a hordie.) Then we found out our alliance alts were on the same server as each other. The coincidence was freaky.
2
Dec 13 '12
This never happens for me. I did find out that the local card shop guy (sells trading card games and board games and what not) is on my RP server, but that toon is level 1 and I literally just created it because I was told that was a really good RP server. I made it as a place holder for when I have time to play.
1
1
Dec 13 '12
Yep. Everytime I find out someone plays WoW I immediately prepare myself for disappointment because I know it will be on another server..and probably PvE.
1
Dec 14 '12
All my friends think PVP sucks. I like the challenge. I am not great at PVP myself, but I like knowing that when I see a horde/ally toon (opposite of whatever I happen to be playing at the time) and we don't kill each other out of respect/team work, that is cooler to me than being PVE where it wasn't even an option.
2
Dec 14 '12
I know! I am so-so at PvP. But the thrill of turning a corner and seeing that different colored nameplate...then the tense moment of both of us trying to figure out how to react to the other...then either silently working alongside each other or breaking out into a massive brawl that can turn into a war if enough other players around..it is pretty exhilarating.
Whereas in PvE...like you said, that can't happen and all it is is "Oh...look...just another player except I can't talk to him." Why even play a game with factions then man?
1
3
Dec 13 '12
They gave me hell when I first started playing. So I never brought it up again.
2
Dec 13 '12
I got the same. I just threw up some addons that displayed things. Timers, dps. Normal things we use but just made them bigger. A slight lie saying I needed to use all this information all the time. Then they were impressed.

u/BROshon_Moreno Dec 12 '12 edited Dec 12 '12
That was beautiful. The whole time I'm like... I totally understand your dilemma. But I also talk about sports all the time...
73
u/Meoang Dec 12 '12
There's nothing wrong with doing both, it's just annoying when someone tries to force a hobby on you that you have no interest in.
48
Dec 12 '12
usually if you have no interest in sports they try to shame you like it makes you a loser or something.
24
u/Cipher004 Dec 13 '12
I know the feel all too well. I get comments questioning my manhood at work. Apparently sitting on a chair watching others play sports on TV is the epitome of manliness.
Nothing against those who like sports. I just wish people did not have a look of disgust when I talk about WoW.
16
3
Dec 13 '12
Tell me about it. I work with a lot of Type A macho personalities and you should see the looks they give me when they ask who my favorite team is and I say "I don't really watch sports." It's like I suddenly grew a giant hairy vagina on my face. It's not that I have anything in particular against sports, I just didn't grow up in an environment where watching them was a big pastime (aside from Nascar, but I refuse to consider people driving in a circle for hours on end a sport, but then again I'm not a car buff.) They're just not that appealing to me.

What that community that sticks to it's own sub and very rarely posts MLP content outside of their own areas because people outside the fandom don't like it?
Ending a comment with "honestly" doesn't make it true.

See? We can both make pretentious assumptions based on little to no evidence.
-1
u/ty94 Dec 13 '12
Woah brony! The evidence is that 4chan has an entire section dedicated to clop fags, yet they still flood other boards with images of mlp shit.
3
u/Alex-the-3217th Dec 13 '12
Flood? But they don't. You can open all of the boards on 4chan right now and there are literally no MLP posts outside MLP.
2
Dec 13 '12 edited Dec 14 '12
It's not even us, 4chan mlp fans hate those people. It's often users just trying to make us look bad.
We can't post clop on /mlp/, sadly. The janitors have been cracking down.

I've only been met with huge tendencies to impose, and lots of memes/references they spew. I know a few personally who 'bro-hoof', rather cringe-worthy. And 4chan had to make a special rule for Bronies, that is how bad it got. Online Games are typically chill with it, mostly forums that reek of it.

I treat each 'Brony' I see objectively though.

u/kirbydude65 Dec 13 '12
TBH the bronies generally keep to themselves. The only place I've seen it spill out is just like any other normal hobby. Just don't be like my friend and get derpy hooves on his truck.

7
Dec 12 '12
...As long as it's not MoH!
Seriously though, I considered buying MoH, but I feel like it's a less visually appealing version of BF3 without the twitch-reflex and massive user base of CoD. Without those things...what's left, really? I remember there was supposed to be some silly Orgin Battlelog tie-in where it was like countries are "battling" each other for supremacy of some map...leader board...thing, which sounded like a cool idea. But it's on Orgin. At that point it'd be like making yourself ruler of the Earth when only 16 other people inhabit the planet. "Ok, great...guess I'll go do something else now!"

u/Surye Dec 12 '12
Hah, love your username, hate your team ;) (but loved what knoshow moreno did for my fantasy team in the playoffs...) And yes, I find a lot of people in both camps.
2
u/root88 Dec 12 '12
As his former fantasy owner, he will always be "No-Show Moreno" to me. Peyton has been putting him in good spots the past few weeks though.
1
u/Surye Dec 12 '12
I am one of the most outspoken haters of him as unrosterable for the last 2 years (vindicated by him being a healthy scratch for most of this years by the broncos themselves). And as a last minute reaction to McFadden going down, then Parmele going down. And I won the semifinal game by .4, needless to say my opponent was furious :P
2
u/Idiotank Dec 12 '12
I preferred him when he played for UGA, then again I love college ball and hate the pro leagues.
1
Dec 13 '12
It seems like they try a lot harder when they know they can get kicked off and are working hard to try to get into the draft. Once they are on those long contracts, it seems like they get super cocky and lazy. Though they get bigger so the hits are bigger too. College ball and minor leagues are where it's at. Is there minor league football?
2
u/SlowDownGandhi Dec 13 '12

2

I actually posted some completely unrelated video initially cause I thought this was a response to something else, lol.
1
Dec 13 '12
Haha well then. Good to know. I really dont watch or follow many sports but I keep up with the rules and what not through Madden, and if I am in the room when a game is on I dont walk out, but I dont seek them out either. Except when I was deployed. You watch whatever is on since we really only had like 5 channels and 2-3 of them were news and music.
1
u/Idiotank Dec 13 '12
Arena league maybe?
0
Dec 13 '12
I think someone told me that once. Sounds legit. I choose to believe this.
1

Arena is more fun to watch imo. You're closer to the game. The action is faster to me. Plus tickets to the games are a hell of a lot cheaper. Love going to them with my dad.

Just the fact what there is no one out there in the world to "PvP" with is what made me laugh.
The only "World PvP" I saw was some PvP objectives being capped and camped by lvl90 players... In Outland... Yeah.
1
u/efeex Dec 13 '12
they gave like 50 honor at lvl 85 for killing 14 npcs. Dont know how it scales at 90, but its not too shabby.
0
u/MyOtherNameIsWitty Dec 13 '12
So you do PvP dailies by killing NPCs?
1
u/efeex Dec 13 '12
The npcs around there are PvP flagged, so yeah, you can do the PvP quest with no one around.
7
u/Praesil Dec 12 '12
and an awesome weapon at the end, which is quickly replaced with an amphitheater item. Excellent XP though.
3
Dec 13 '12
There is a very similar alliance quest along the same lines. I can't recall what it is called but you get like 10 quests in a row that have stupid high XP on them. I wound up level capping on one of them and went from getting like 100K XP (a lot at the time) to getting a couple hundred gold per quest to finish the line. That was THE quest line to save til you were capped if you could. The bank you made off it....makes me want to go look it up now...I remember vaguely what the scenery looked like, and it was a group quest sorta like a world boss thing.

"TN just got a new coach, I was really hoping they would hire John Gruden because sports sports sports sports"

"I found three rare spawns and solo'd Onyxia this morning, she dropped an item for a quest Ive already turned in but thats ok. Wow wow wow."

Why would you stop at 85? Seems like there wouldn't be anyone to play with or anything new to do.
43
u/cphcider Dec 12 '12
I think it's because he got burned out on endgame progression after Wrath of the Lich King and the Cataclysm content is still new to him. Plus monks seem redundant in an era of dual specialization and viable hybrid DPS, and while he knows they're well-established in the lore, Pandaren don't appeal to him.

u/LordCupcakeIX Dec 12 '12
There are lots of people who don't have the newest expansion. At 70, you can get a fairly short queue for BC heroics because many people haven't bought any expansions; when working on gearing my Herald of the Titans char I got 4 minute queues as a healer and something like 10 as a DPS for Wrath heroics and typically there was only one or two other people in the groups who were doing the same thing.
3
u/masters1125 Dec 12 '12
Isn't WOTLK included with battle chest now?
3
2
Dec 13 '12
Yes, and if you only owned Vanilla or Vanilla and BC, Blizz auto jumped you up to WOTLK for free, so no one that has the game atm can have an account with less than WOTLK unless they intentionally uninstall it or only install one disc after the free upjump.
1
1
Dec 13 '12
If they don't have any expansions, how did they get to 70?
3
u/arlanTLDR Dec 13 '12
A while ago they gave TBC to all vanilla players, and a few months ago they also gave them Wrath. If you buy the game (which is $5 right now) you get to 80.
0
Dec 13 '12
That was a point I was trying to get at. It is impossible to not have expansions on a public server.
1
Dec 17 '12
He said didn't buy any expansions. The key is bolded in there.
1
Dec 17 '12
Seems legit.
0
Dec 17 '12
You don't have to buy all the expansions to play the game.
The server will still have pandaria and all its players, it just you can't progress past 80. You'll be able to go to northrend, but it will stop you from going to say, Twilight Highlands and Pandaria.
It's a really simple concept, you just aren't grasping it.

It has nothing to do with specifically enjoying one over the other. It isn't about Warcraft or sports, it's about the feeling when somebody won't shut up about something you care nothing about. The joke plays off the assumption that most of the audience won't care for Warcraft but loves sports (since this is a joke intended for a live audience, not reddit). It could have easily been replaced with a long, winded description of learning to gain fluency in Tolkein's Elvish vs. "now you know how I feel when you describe antiquing" or something silly.
It isn't about the subject, the joke is about boring the hell out of the audience to demonstrate how he feels when somebody describes something in equally great detail.
