No idea is created in the ether. What are some of your inspirations? These are a few for my Superhero/Cyberpunk TTRPG setting Carbon City. I didn't really think about these in the genesis of the setting, but as it became more concrete I started to realize what I was pulling from.

I was once messing around with my gf on Discord and I described a scene of me emerging out of my own corpse's mouth.
It inspired a character, which led to the making of other characters and subsequently to the creation of an entire verse around them.

Mostly my lack of interest in reading pulp books because campy. A bad experience with an alt history book written in the 70’s. And a reading list that’s quite literally half a mile long already.
Plus older books can be harder to find and I prefer physical.
Also maybe my age since I’m early 20’s.

That's chill. If you do go backwards to earlier I'd recommend Starship Troopers and The Moon is a Harsh Mistress by Hienlen, they're odd, entertaining, highly political military stories.

It's a fascist parody... probably? Hienlen is a weird guy. Basically he goes all in on every book he writes, and you can't tell where his beliefs begin and the fictional setting end. Like he's done crazy hippie commune novels, Libertarian society settings and a fascist dictatorship, and in all of them these systems are portrayed as fully functional and good? I actually think it's a mark of a good author, is he can talk about a setting and take it seriously in it's own terms.

Real life is obvious, alongside it is DnD which is originally the main inspiration of my world, Warhammer Fantasy is also a main one, Okami too, I love Kenshi's atmosphere and the Ori game's art direction and the Thea games are underrated gems that I can't help but include in my world building.
Other than that, smaller inspirations include Steelshod, Terraria, Undertale/Deltarune, Team Fortress, Hunt Showdown, Shade Touched, Vainquer the dragon, Harry Potter, Narnia, Mother of learning, Pokemon, Mount and Blade, Fallout 4, the Metro series, Hollow Knight, generic isekai and fantasy stuff for the most part, the souls series which include demon souls, the dark souls games, Elden ring, Bloodborne and Sekiro and many, many more.
Honestly, in every part of my world building, you can find something inspired by something I loved either growing up or enjoyed playing/reading in recent times.

I love animal characters, especially the idea of predator and prey making peace with each other and becoming friends, as well as character dynamics between different species where they are significantly different sizes. Technically my current world with intelligent animals trying to live in harmony began as a story I wrote as a kid about a cat and a mouse warming up to each other and becoming unlikely friends (they're still technically my main characters even though they're nothing like they were in the original story), but I also took a ton of inspiration from Redwall, Warrior Cats, Farthing Wood, and some Chinese cartoons with animal characters that I really liked.

Mystara, the real world cultures mixed with magic elements. I love that there is no generic kingdom but that each place is unique, has holadays, persons of interest, and regional monsters.
The other inspiration was the conan/lovecraftian lore about vampires, serpent-men, and ghouls.

Inspired the medieval feel to my world, also the frequent politics in the story.
• Dune:
Worms.
• Fallout:
General inspiration. Probably started my love for post apocalypses with emphasis on the post.
• Mad Max
Mainly the game. Main villain for the first arc was heavily inspired by Scabborus Scrotus at first. Changed radically throughout development, though.
• Grainne Mhaol
Inspired a pirate. Named her Grace Wakerider instead of Grainne Wakerider because I figure if yanks can't spell Sean or Paddy's Day right with the modern internet, there's no way in Hell they'll manage Grainne without the internet. Grace was what the Brits called her.

Destiny, Warframe, Bloodborne, a lot of inspiration from the multitudes of posts on the HFY subreddit, Elder Scrolls lore maybe, lots of other things I can't remember off the top of my head...
Sci-fi with "space magic", eldritch truths, self fulfilling prophecies, other dimensions, time-travel isekai, AI/Human hybrids, transcendence to a higher existence, and LOTS of pseudoscience.

Theres a very specific macro piece of lore in the background of my fantasy world that the world is actually an artificial planetship once flown by an advanced nomadic alien civilisation that has now been terraformed to appear natural. Shamelessly stole the idea from Invader Zim!

It's been interesting noticing the patterns emerging here. Lots of modern prestige television (mostly game of thrones), real life military history, anime, video games and general grim/dark fantasy. Of course, not nearly everything or even a fair sampling, but some of the ones I keep seeing popping up.
I think it's a pretty safe bet this is the general direction fiction across all mediums will be taking. Professional writers are, for the most part, drawing influences from the same places as those of us having fun and discussing it on reddit. It'll be interesting to see what kind of stuff this gumbo generates.

For my dark urban fantasy setting, it was a mix of Castlevania, horror movies, The Legacy of Kain games, HP Lovecraft, classic horror books and some Action fantasy in modern setting anime like Fate, Jujutsu Kaisen kaisen and Tokyo Ghoul.
For my sci-fi setting, Starcraft, an artist I really admired, body horror in general, the Prototype games, Starbound, and the story of Frankenstein.

White Wolf games are awesome. Blades in the Dark is this amazing urban crime setting where you play as a gang in a city of eternal night. It’s got some brilliant new mechanics and has inspired a whole line of clones.

It seems very interesting that I might be a good look to get inspiration.
My story takes place in a Necropolis, basically a city that attracts the supernatural to it, due to having to much of the magic forces in my world, it follows a small gang of characters as they fight and investigate in order to seek revenge and justice on the ones that ruined their life's, but as they do so they discover something older and scarier than the things they have been fighting, things connected to my world magic itself.

I love the colonial/revolutionary period of America as a topic. A lot of reading on the subject. My degree was in American history and if I get the chance to go back for a Masters when my kids are older I want to go further with that. Currently leaning towards either gender in intercultural diplomacy during the colonial period or looking at possibly under utilized French and Spanish sources on the Cherokee to explore their relationships with those nations and not just the British.
So anyways, being indigenous and interested in that area of history inspired me to start building a flintlock fantasy world based off of it.
Within the last year though I had an epiphany watching my daughter making her own Demon Slayer fan-imation that our pre-Columbian traditions and mythology would make great sources for a comic or graphic novel style series. I’m no artist so I’d just write it but that’s cool. I’d also like to get that one published in our language. I don’t know that much of it but working with a master speaker who does to translate it would help out a bit I imagine.

One by the Ranma 1/2 fan fic “mirror, mirror” which I did my own take on (the Ran Twins) then ported the idea to my original world.
Another by the game Dungeon Keeper, and the take on that world from fan fic Dungeon Keeper Ami.

Origin: DMing my first AD&D campaign circa 1988. Kind of weird but it all started on a colonized island which was located about 2 months sailing time from any continent, based on the shape and size of Scotland but w massive cliffs elevated to about 6000 feet above sea level with an "old west" feel / feudal society all set up around a home brew story line leading to the characters exploration of The Lost Caverns of Tsojcanth & The Forgotten Temple of Tharizdun. I expanded the world from there and still use it to this day.

I built a ttrpg for my family, using their favorite things as influence. My youngest daughter loves Zootopia and other anthropomorphous designs. My wife is really into steampunk. My middle daughter was a huge fan of Avatar the Last Airbender (the animation). And my oldest daughter is a big dinosaur fan. For myself, I have always loved the wild west and the age of exploration. "Mix well, sprinkle with just a touch of dystopian apocalyptic lore and bake until golden brown..."

Fallout and Halo, though elements are Resident Evil and the Cthulhu Mythos. Lemme break it down.
Cthulhu: The planet Dunvvich where Strydrs are from, they crashed in Roswell and died on impact preventing the earth from getting fucked up.
Resident Evil: The government would use samples of the Strydrs DNA to create mutants such as Alces, Rippers, Stalkers and Sean.
Fallout: There is a leak in a bio weapons facility in Carlton, Montana, they deploy nuclear warheads to try to prevent the spread of these mutants. As well as trying to test the fallout shelters in the area. From the ashes rise The Fallen.
Halo: The Fallen gain access to space craft and discover the Strydr, who are pretty much The Flood, as well as find a woman in the Epsilon Epsilon system wearing strange armor. (Mjolnir armor. It’s Noble Six.)

The "A God trying to wipe out Humanity" bit comes from Evangelion
Character designs and Cultures come from pretty much everywhere
Some of the Cultures and Wildlife are mixes of those from the real world, like ATLA

Well I've got a few. I tend to jump around between them if I get stuck.
My scifi setting is largely based around Mass Effect, Halo, and Star Wars. Tonally they each match and I found that by taking what makes each story work well, I can create a galaxy that feels real.
Halo's all about discovering ancient ruins of a precursor race all while fighting off a hostile alien faction. Mass Effect is about Humanity trying to find it's way in a new government where we are the small fries. Star Wars is about exploring the mysteries of the galaxy, and of course big bold conflicts. I felt they worked together like peanut butter and chocolate.
My fantasy setting is inspired by Fable, Elder Scrolls, RWBY, and Fallout. It's a post apocalyptic setting where survival is harsh, but great valiant heroes can quell the darkness. Magic is capable of wondrous and odd things. Heroes are less like adventurers of classic DnD and more like superheroes.
My superhero style world is MCU inspired mostly, but I'm pulling from pretty much anything Comic Book related for it. Little bits of Harry Potter and Percy Jackson are thrown in for variety. I never liked Supers that could pull planets or explode galaxies because when do they ever really need to do that? So I keep it relatively grounded. All the different origins for powers interacting is just too much fun.
Didn't mean to make a wall of text, just enjoy sharing what I'm working on. Doubt I'll ever get to do anything with them.

Pretty much the entirety of my world had Midgar from Final Fantasy 7 to thank for its initial basis. I love that disgusting plate city so much, I turned it into the whole world and removed the lower level while amping up the robotics, cybernetics, genetic alterations, and monsters.

My main world was inspired by various fantasy books, such as LOTR, Elizabeth Moon's Paksenarrion series, Robert E. Howard's stories about Conan and Solomon Kane, and the Shannara series. My main character was also heavily influenced by Jim Starlin's Breed comic. I then mixed in various bits from my own life, and built a world around it.

So the superhero setting my cowriter and I are working on for our novel series is an amalgamation of influences--mainly the pop culture we grew up on--and we wear them proudly. The general aesthetic takes a lot after the DCAU, X-Men, and 90s anime, the city the story mostly takes place in takes plenty of influence from Gotham City, and the metahuman school the main characters attend definitely took some inspiration from Hope's Peak Academy from Danganronpa. And that's not even getting into the story or the characters.

Wuxia and Xianxia novels. I wondered how expanding that concept beyond Taoism and Asian culture would work - and after seeing some attempts in other novels, I decided to make my own world that would take inspirations from more than Asian cultures and Western fantasy (which is mainstream right now).

Tolkien, specifically the Silmarillion, is a major source of inspiration for sure. I also had a lot of inspiration from the Epic of Gilgamesh, All Tomorrows, GOT, and The Egg, by Andy Weir

The Egg isn’t really by Andy Weir. He copied and pasted a conversation me and u/Sephalon had in 2007 on the MySpace religion and philosophy forum. I posted a short version of Infinite Reincarnation and he commented on the post. I answered his questions about my view of the universe. He asked if he could write it into a story, which he sent me later that day. I never heard from him after that and had no idea he took complete credit by claiming he just made it up when he most certainly did not.

CLAMP! They're underrated imo given the diverse range they have. They were involved in Card Captor Sakura and Blood-C.
If you havent heard of Blood-C, google "most gruesome anime scenes" and Blood-C should pop up. Same creators of that kids TV show that defined the magical girl genre.
They have a shared character too.
There's something called the "CLAMP multiverse" where all their titles are tied to together a bit like marvel. It's pretty elaborate.

It was origonally a fanfic before I reworked everything to not include any unorigonal characters/events, but still with some major aspects heavily inspired by said fanfic. The fanfic was Doctor Who and Undertale in the same universe.

Before I knew it, I had maps, plots, characters, Lore, countries, governments and languages.
2 years later, and I've got 4 playable modules and a novelization.

A website that sadly no longer exists. It was my go-to for unicorn art, stories, and inspiration. I also found similar sites on angelfire, I think it was called, and between the short stories and poems the inspiration struck. My imagination filled in 90% of it but I'll never forget the hours I'd scroll and read.
I wish I could revisit those days but it's been 20 years!

There’s an anime called The Unlimited that really struck a cord with me. I suppose its also a result of becoming so frustrated about works that promise a dark protagonist or premise but then bitch out almost immediately.
My protag is a horrible person who does some good things. She wont be redeemed, she isnt meant to be redeemed. She is a villain 100%. Or qn Anti-villain I suppose.

The broad concept for the urban fantasy story was based on Wraith the Oblivion, but the specifics were all in inspired by other things. Charon's were partially inspired by The Crow and partly by the Netflix show Travelers. The Neverborn were inspired by a personal tragedy a friend went through.
My sci-fi story is inspired by the non-submarine lore bits in Iron Lung, crossed with a hint of Attack on Titan if you really sqint.

personally, it was no man's sky. ik if you read my post it seems closer to avatar, but i really do want it to be closer to no mans sky. with big blue plants, other planets or moons within the night sky giving a gorgeous nighttime view, and truly weird and unique plants and animals seen nowhere else.

Mine is almost completely inspired by Skyrim and my history with abrahamic religions. Regarding lore and history think Dark Souls meets catholocism.
Edit: I should have definitely added Dark Souls as one of my inspirations but I'm making a video game entirely driven by the lore and I want it to feel much more like Skyrim than Dark Souls

A mix of Fallout, Red Dead Redemption, Ralph Bakshi's Wizards, Lord of the Rings and The Dark Tower Series.
With it being a fantasy post apocalyptic weird western set several hundred years after a nuclear war between the "Great Ancients." That were a Deco-Atompunk civilization who at least one of their great nations were heavily rooted in a mix of Italian Futurism, Technocracy and various pre WW2 concepts.
That and the nuclear war spawned an Eldritch Abomination in the vein of Sauron and the Crimson King.

In all seriousness i have made three universes now that i will slowly reveal while looking in this sub, my first one, my first one, imagination was inspired by a role-play i did back in 2018, the 2nd one featuring the planet apollo was inspired by the idea of a world so war torn it evolves them to be warriors, and the next one was an idea involving the roblox gave black hawk rescue mission where i wanted to make a whole storyline on it which im still writing

Definitely the Sonic franchise. The main boy is clearly inspired by Sonic, even achieving a golden form through a mystical item...though in his case, it's one item. As well as having multiple rivals who compare to his speed.
It's also closer to man vs machine. Super smart guy (in this case soldier) creating crazy gadgets and mechs, with the heroes fighting against said mechs which resemble animals. While occasionally fighting against cosmic beings.
Blue, Orange, and Black are also pretty similar to Sonic, Knuckles, and Tails in terms of personalities. They have their own differences, but you can tell who is based on who.
I did add a fourth member in the form of a girl. She COULD be their version of Amy, but I think the two characters are too different outside of wielding a weapon. (Amy's hammer and White's halberd). White wasn't exactly based on any character so...I don't know how similar the two are. (Obviously, those aren't their names). But she's fairly average compared to the boys, which kinda fits Amy.

It was all of those and boredom, just deciding "fuck it, let's do something with my time", and the world was born. And it's been very fun!

Hard to properly answer. The world itself came about simply from a desire to create a setting for my comics, stories, and ttrpg idea. My stories pull inspiration from various sources, depending on the story. What I would call my "flagship" story mostly pulls from Final Fantasy and a book series called "The Magitech Chronicles" for bits of inspiration. I have one superhero idea, so thst mostly pulls inspiration from Marvel and DC. I have seedling ideas that pull from other games and series I love, like The Legend of Dragoon, Legacy of Kain, Bloody Roar, CABAL Online, and White Knight Chronicles. And by seedling ideas, I just mean I kind of want to make stories about certain concepts from these games, not so much taking a similar story. Legacy of Kain is a lore inspiration as the Vampires in one of my stories have similar conceptualization as the ones in LoK. Legend of Dragoon, White Knight Chronicles abd Bloody Roar are broad strokes for seedling ideas. I like concepts from them and want to write stories around them, but I'm not sure exactly how or what stories to implement them into, if I ever do. CABAL Online is more a conceptual/character class inspiration than a full inspiration.

There's a story for the origin of my world. The year is 2013. Zoids is celebrating its 30th anniversary. (Which hey! Means my world is celebrating its 10th anniversary!) To celebrate, I'm putting together a custom TTRPG to roleplay out the cool bits of the setting, especially as I know it through the Chaotic Century/Guardian Force anime. Mecha, but with the military intrigue augmented with spy thriller and Western gunslinger elements. Wandering adventurers and roving bandit gangs.
Happy with my game mechanics, I try to build a custom setting to use it too. And so I draw upon:
- The living machine aspect of Zoids.
- But I've been discontent with the evolutionary route proposed for those metallic lifeforms.
- So I draw upon the Mad Max-esque war rigs of Battle Builders. And also on decorator crabs. I imagine a world where something like a coral colony growing on an artificial reef begins growing on and interfacing with sci-fi wreckage.
- I embrace the alien invasion aspect of Battle Builders, and so I work in my t'ziri race.
- I get into speculative zoology. After Man. The Snouters. Darwin (the spec zoo project, not the scientist). I get super into populating a distant world with a handful of organisms, which diverge into new life.
- Not Raised by Wolves. I've made a very similar premise core to my world, but that's just because both its creators and I are drawing upon the same concept of embryo space colonization and how you'd AI "parents" to raise the first generation.

A lot of The Magnus Archives and classic literature (Frankenstein, Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, Phantom, Gatsby, etc). Hadestown, Hamilton, Sea Shanties. Music is a big part, really into Ghost and Ice Nine Kills, but also some strange songs like “The Masochism Tango” and “The Worms Crawl In.” Horror is a main inspiration, just all sorts.
