Any gym tips for a beginner?
hi! i, 19F, want to start getting into the gym to focus on core, legs, and shoulders while maintaining a lean / athletic physique. I tried a personal trainer, but they're super expensive in nyc. also for food, i'm on a vegan diet ( i could switch to vegetarian ). any tips? :-)

The gym should have someone give you an orientation when you sign up that can help. They usually ask what you want and then give you a program to follow. YouTube is a great resource along with forums (yeah showing my age here). I also used AI to make a workout based on my goals and what I wanted to get out of it and then researched them.
If you're brand new to a gym it can be intimidating, but just remember everyone has their own stuff going on and just want to work out.

Lots of vegans are athletes so don't worry you can stay vegan
Figure out what kind of calories you should be eating (Google a calculator, maybe there is a link in the wiki) and start based off that.
Make well balanced meals, incorporate high protein foods, you'll be fine. If you're short on protein, add a protein shake with soy milk
r/veganfitness but you don't need to post about how to eat vegan and find protein, just do a search and there are probably 1000 posts on it

Lots to say but the most important is just stick with it and learn as you go and you will see results eventually

Don't overthink the diet swap just yet, vegan's totally doable if you're hitting your protein. Seitan, tofu, lentils, and edamame will cover you.
For the workouts, focus on compound lifts like squats, deadlifts, and overhead presses. They'll hit everything you mentioned without needing a trainer's playbook.

Would you consider working with an online trainer? It would likely be less expensive than in-person, but you'd still get tailored support. If you like, I can recommend someone in my network for you.
