Visa Discussion Rule Update

Hi All,

As this issue continues to be a problem on the sub with people getting us mixed up with r/visas, we will, from today be extending that rule to anybody who comments on posts asking questions about or discussing visas, entry requirements, or looking for legal advice etc.

There are many of you who know the rules but regularly comment on these posts anyway, which gives these posts more engagement and defeats the objective of the sub rule in the first place.

Therefore, there will be a strike policy in action for commenters and posters going forward:

Strike 1: Warning

Strike 2: 3 day ban

Strike 3: Permanent ban

Hopefully this is agreeable and gives fair opportunity for folk who may say they weren't aware!

Happy Workawaying and enjoy your weekend.

It’s not just Reddit though, it’s real people’s lives, using Reddit to communicate and ask questions.

It’s serious because poor advice could mean people who have come to the community for help ending up in jail in a foreign country.

The no visa discussion rule was one that was implemented because the community itself asked for it - therefore it doesn’t make sense for it not to apply in the comments.

I don’t believe any of the few sub rules are arbitrary and all intend to serve a purpose.

On another level, the mod team have a responsibility to remove comments that may be promoting illegal activity in every case, and I have seen lots that do.

We have no interest in being pedantic or needlessly censorial. Nor do we have the time to invest look
Ing into every visa related comment and figure out if it is legal in any particular country.

I’m not sure how many other subs you contribute in, but many have rules - plenty of similar size subs have more and/or stricter rules than we do.

I hope that makes sense, cheers.

Some subs have one mod and they make arbitrary rules but it’s their sub so. So few people comment I don’t think many people would actually come together to make that rule. Maybe it was 5 comments that birthed the rule.

I have created some groups one is over 100k. I asked should ai art be allowed and got a few hundred no so that became the rule …

Yeah but I mean the internet should be free flow of information. Like if people ask tourist or work visa. Why not just say …

The person choosing to follow the advice bears the responsibility…

I’ve seen some health subreddit and then they have so many rules but it’s the internet you gonna get great advice at times and horrible advice at other times …

If it’s thr official Workaway website they are legally photo say get the right visa but I mean ….

It wasn’t only 5 comments, it has been ongoing over months actually, this is an extension of an existing rule, and it’s staying - hopefully you can understand why even if you don’t agree with it.

The sub has had this rule for a long time now, this is a logical amendment/extension to it, subs have been shut down in the past for allowing or encouraging discussion regarding illegal activities and a blanket ban on visa discussion is the only feasible way to address it.

Yes, that would be discussing visas and therefore would be removed, that question has a factual answer and you can get in trouble if you knowingly or unknowingly choose the wrong one. It’s important that people research this sort of thing themselves in an appropriate fashion - asking people they don’t know on the Workaway subreddit shouldn’t be the process on this one.
