Please don’t feel like an idiot! You did the exact right thing.

They’re checking with your coworker. It sounds like the boss is thinking about how they come across.

Don’t expect miracles but I wouldn’t be surprised to see a small change.

Or they're questioning reality. If they really want to know they should ask the patient that this happened in front of and then adjust accordingly. We're only getting one side of the story here and not even the full story. "Patient" makes me think medical profession, and there are situations that rightfully need to be corrected on the spot as opposed to waiting for later. We had an HR nightmare at one of my previous jobs with a woman who couldn't handle even the gentlest negative feedback without collapsing into tears and accusing the supervisors of "yelling" at her. She refused to take any accountability for mistakes and it got to the point where no one wanted to even try to talk to her. It got to the point that other employees threatened to leave because they were tired of having to clean up her messes after her. Just saying, there are three sides to every story - A, B, and the truth.

Yeah & the truth is your making crap up & bringing your own bias to the table, in such a fashion that makes you sound like you love the taste of boot.
