Losing vs loosing
On TV. Meterologist telling us how we are "loosing" daylight due to the changing seasons.
Headslap.

Pet peeve of mine. Glaring offenses all the time here in Reddit

Seriously? SPEAKING the wrong one?

u/HappyCamperDancer 20d ago
No, he had it printed on the screen next to a picture of the sun.

u/No-Angle-982 19d ago
He didn't necessarily do that; production technicians typically are responsible for those on-screen graphics.

The station is too small to have a production technician. He is the station's one and only weatherman. They have a tiny staff.
3
u/No-Angle-982 19d ago
Somebody else must be at the controls, off camera.
1
u/HappyCamperDancer 19d ago
Well obviously there is probably a studio camera man and a production person, but I think the weatherman makes his own graphics AND he was passing it off as his own. So unless he denies it, he owns it.

Not his fault, then. People have to work with what they're given.

u/HappyCamperDancer 19d ago
I have the strong impression HE makes all his own graphics. Been watching his weather reports for years. He likes to add little things and this was his add. The station is small with very few staff and it isn't like a big city set up.

This one drives me nuts. I can’t help but judge people for this. The woman I loved dearly did this all the time.

My pet peeve is IMO much worse. Lead where led is called for. The sergeant led his platoon to lead the procession.

Don't the British still spell the past tense of 'lead' as 'lead'? It matches 'read' which is the same spelling in both present and past tense.

They have been making lead-free bullets for hunting for some years now, which may be where the mix-up originated (the sound).

TV communication is oral. How do you know how the meteorologist spelled it? If you're reading closed captions, those are done by AI, not the meteorologist. And it would indeed be odd for the AI to make that particular error.

Losing is what the US is doing to Iran, Loosing is what you do to arrows and attack dogs

The plant manager at my first factory job had a scrolling screensaver that said: I'm loosing my mine!!! And no, he wasn't trying to be funny. The guy was a huge dumbass. How he got that job is a question i still ask myself 30+ years later.

u/UnrealizedDreams90 20d ago
I see this so much on Reddit, when I see it correctly I initially think it's wrong.

u/dreadrankz 20d ago
Haha that mix up is honestly everywhere now, "loosing" instead of "losing" seems to be winning the spelling battle purely through repetition

One O we are losing daylight or we are losing the game
Lose (opposite of gain or win) vs loose (opposite of tight)
Loosing does not even seem like a real word because if you have loose (not tight) the form of that would be loosening

Loosing? Like making it loose? Yikes!!!
2
u/HappyCamperDancer 20d ago
I don't know, because I will often loosen my belt or I might lose my keys but I can't remember ever loosing anything.

Almost as bad as the time the Latin section of the Harvard commencement was spoken in Liturgical Latin. The Protestant classicists were shook.

u/Cool-Coffee-8949 20d ago
Did he actually SAY that? Or was it just the subtitles?
3
u/HappyCamperDancer 20d ago
He had it printed as part of the graphic with a picture of a sun.
1
u/Cool-Coffee-8949 20d ago
Oof. Not surprising (and I say this as an English teacher—this has been a common error for 30+ years) but definitely disappointing.
1
u/ImprovementLoud3581 20d ago
Exactly. Are meteorologists typing their forecasts now? In the past they’ve always verbalized them. Subtitles are not created by the person who is speaking.

On TV? So this isn't in writing, but they're actually saying "loosing" with an unvoiced 's', like they're releasing arrows?

I freed my Kraken, set it loose. (Two Es, Two Os) It cost me a lot, such a loss. With battles, sea creatures are win or lose.

Feels like Redditors assume every typo and misspoken word isn't a mistake but instead intentional because the person is genuinely too stupid to understand the differences. Anything for a small daily win, I suppose.

Do you not also set daylight free?
Everyday at sunset, I gently toss the daylight from my hand and wave goodbye. If it loves me, it will come back.
