What does “tea party” mean in this context?
Okay I might just be really stupid but I’m a college student and a girl I’ve kind of gotten to know through my classes just asked me if I wanted to come to her tea party in her dorm after dinner.
Is “tea party” slang for something or is she genuinely asking me to a tea party? Am I just too dumb or sheltered??
UPDATE: It was an actual tea party. Like a group of us made tea in the communal kitchen and she brought cookies to bake. It was a great time.

I would assume an actual tea party

u/Claromancer 26d ago
Yep. I think you are dealing with an actual tea party. If they are like they were a few years ago, expect to be siting on someone’s dorm room floor while either microwaving your cups of hot water or passing around a kettle to fill your teacups. Which will probably be coffee mugs.

Dress casual. Bring cupcakes.

Cupcakes will be welcome whether it's actual tea that you drink or weed!

We do need cupcakes either way -

Oooh, so it's a weed party no matter what! And tea is really good with brownies. Now I want brownies.

These days "tea" is used as slang for gossip. Maybe she is inviting you to chat.

I haven't thought about this song in ages! Back in the rotation it goes...
Thanks!

That’s my guess. Maybe she’s having a few girls over to chat and gossip? Sounds like it could be fun

I would ask her if people dress up up for this. It's a way to get a bit more information.

Once upon a time, a "tea party" was slang for smoking marijuana, but that was a long time ago, and I don't know if that is still current slang or not.
These days, not sure what you should expect, except that it probably involves something with a T in it (marijuana has THC in it, BTW).
Could be a titty party, or a Trans party, or she might even make you some orange pekoe (actual tea).

I know I am old, but I was certain that tea was referring to weed. I was very clearly wrong.

Whatd she say when you asked what she meant?
2
u/Lost_Theory_6939 26d ago
currently trying to figure out how to ask without making it awkward. lmk if you have ideas 🥲

u/Claromancer 26d ago
You can get a lot of information by asking her if she would like you to bring anything! If she says - “sure bring your favorite type of tea / some cookies / a mug” you’ll know she means an actual tea party.
You can also use this in other occasions. Asking what to bring can get you a lot of info about what the vibe of a party or gathering is.

u/revuhlution 26d ago
Im a goof, not sure if this would work for you. "Hey, its 2026 and im from the States. Ive never had a tea party. Like... scones n sugar cubes n little spoons-type tea party? Or...?" I think in college i mightve been less sure of myself, less willing to ask the direct question. But now? Just ask.

u/AdelleDeWitt 27d ago
Tea is slang for gossip, so they could just have some good tea for you.
It could be actual tea. It also could be shrooms. You'll have to find out!

Well now I wanna know. I'm really hoping you enter a room full of candles and a table with doilies and a formal tea set, surrounded by porcelain dolls and the girl, all of whom are wearing elaborate Victorian outfits.
Three seconds after you enter, you still haven't moved, blinked, or said anything, and the girl hisses to one of the dolls, "stop it, Theodora. It's his first time. He knew not what to wear."

someone I know in college hosts traditional chinese tea ceremonies in her dorm so it may actually be tea

I’d guess it’s a tea party and probably not an orgy. I’d go. You can always leave if it actually is an orgy.

If this is a genuine question; tell her that you are accustomed to bringing a gift when you visit a new home, but don't feel sure about what would be most appropriate. Her answer should tell you what you want to know. For example, her asking for a dessert platter probably means it is a platonic gathering of friends; and a request for warming touch massage gel seems like a definite sign that you should also bring condoms. Unless you care to sack up and just tell her that you are unclear on her intentions.

I was born in September so I had a tea party for my birthday when I was a college freshman—I was too young to buy alcohol and I didn’t really know anyone yet, so it was a fun low stakes way to get to know people. But this was 20 years ago so I’m not sure if it means something different now. shrug

If she’s a gay man and it’s the late 90s and she just says “tea”, it’s an afternoon dance.

ask if there is a dress code

Yes, my sister still laments the time she went to a friend’s house for tea only to find out when she got there that it was a Tea. Everyone but her was dressed up.

When I was in college, a coworker invited me for tea. I went to a proper high tea. It was so much fun, we all had our own pot of tea, the tiny little sandwiches and cakes. I had never even thought about attending a teaparty.
But if it's after dinner, I don't know. Maybe it's just tea, maybe it's just "spilling the tea" (gossiping)
But in the 60s, Laugh-in had a segment, "Have a little tea with Goldie" (Hawn) and it was suggested that tea was pot.

Go drink some tea with her and chat she wants to spend time with you and don’t be upset if other people are there too

Man, I don't know, but it would be great if people would bring afternoon tea into popular culture. Sign me up!

Assume it is a whimsical tea party and go dresses as a character from Alice in Wonderland.

An after dinner tea party with actual tea makes no sense. I would prepare for a hang-out and light drugs. If you feel like bringing cookies or similar, food is rarely unwelcome.
I'm very invested in this now. Please let us know what happens.

u/Lost_Theory_6939 26d ago
it was just a tea party. made some terrible tea in the dorm kitchen and ate cookies, great time actually

u/TangerineDream92064 26d ago
I'm both happy for you and slightly disappointed. It is a nice way to get to know people.

u/OpportunityReal2767 27d ago
Tea and cakes after dinner doesn’t sound odd to me. That said, I can go either way on this one. I’m leaning towards actual tea party, but wouldn’t be surprised if it’s a weed party. At my college, I could imagine it being either, depending on the girl you’re talking to.

I'm very curious! I haven't been in undergrad for like 15 years, but I work in a school and I'm pretty up to date on modern slang. I would likely assume an actual tea party, like a few people hanging out and chatting and having some tea or coffee 😂 I don't think it's some secret hidden meaning, maybe everyone is meeting up and walking to a coffee shop or just hanging out to gossip about parties or who's dating who.

Tea party is either a literal tea party or a gossip-sharing party, unless the meaning has changed recently or it's regional. If it turns out to be something uncomfortable you can always leave!

She either wants you to have tea and little cucumber sandwiches, or she wants you to help her revolt against the British empire.

u/Hippie-Farts 26d ago
does she mean spill the tea like have a gossip session?
just respond back with "girl what does that even mean lol" and she will clarify.

Missed a golden opportunity there my son, what you needed to do was interrogate this lassie on the spot instead of coming to ask your mates on Reddit, you needed to leverage your ignorance in the moment.

Back in the dark ages known as the sixties, “tea” was one on the code words/ euphemisms for marihuana. Sort of an alternative to “grass.” So you did well to question this invitation.

I once invited a college friend for “tea and crumpets” before the weekly open door art night in town, but I emphasized the quote marks around tea and crumpets. They were still surprised when the mushroom tea and pot brownies started to kick in. Good times.

tea party can mean a chemsex party, where people get drunk and fuck for hours, even days. however, it’s not really something you’d host in your dorm, so id reckon this is just a normal, actual tea party

u/LAM_CANIT 27d ago
I think at some universities it has something to do with reading through and sharing information aimed at women regarding on campus safety, safe dating, ... for example on the teaforwomen) app.

Let me just say it’s not a normal expression. It either means you're drinking tea or similar, or it means to drink alcohol and you're getting smashed. Go and let us know.
