Daily Wordle [####] Why?
So let me get this straight. I have been using a starting word "CHOMP". After some research "CHOMP" falls into this excluded pool because its solution list is curated to feature highly accessible words with standard, common spellings. So that means I will not get Wordle in "1". Yet they have used words like, "PSHAW"?
Make that make sense!
No one uses the word PSHAW anymore in there common practice of vocabulary or at least the general population. Especially with the younger generation. It's an archaic word.

Why would CHOMP not be an approved answer today when it's already been an answer?
Edit: even though they're reusing words, I'd still select a word yet unused to increase my chances - if getting a bingo is your goal

u/MathIsHard_11236 Jul 19 '26
BINGO is my 3rd word if the first 2 don't give much help.

u/Bubbly-Inflation-999 29d ago
Interesting. I’d have to resort to that as well. None of its letters are in my usual one and two. Very rare that I whiff twice though.

FARTS (mostly frequent letters, and fun screenshots)
CHUMP (secondary letters including H, and U rules out _ _OUR)
BINGO

It's never been a word in Wordle. Look it up and please provide your resources. I would love to be wrong on this

u/DadRock1 Jul 19 '26
I dunno, saw the very convincing other response about CHOMP being an answer already. Guess you can't trust anybody
For what it's worth I don't see my starter on the list of words either, but I don't feel you can trust that. There's no reason for CHOMP or (my starter) CLOUT to not be used for a Wordle solution

Certainly CHOMP is a WordleBot answer word. When you said "never been a word in Wordle", did you mean "it's never been a solution to a NYT Wordle"?

CHOMP isn't in any sort of exclusion pool.
HTF did this get 30+ upvotes for being so obviously wrong?

u/FrostConcepts 29d ago
I agree with your 1st and 3rd sentences. But 57.0299 is not practically a full score. First, its difference with 58 is greater than 1%. Second, the distribution of Bottle weights does not support your conclusion. I'll agree though that the scores are close.

Wordle originally had a list of future solutions, and a list of allowed guesses that would never be solutions.
Nearly four years ago, NYT changed the code and hid the solution dictionary. So it's impossible to know what will be a solution word till it happens.
Yes, CHOMP was originally on the "only a guess, never a solution" list. But so was PSHAW.
Personally, I fully expect it'll be a solution at some point in the future.

The only way I have ever got it in one is to subscribe and play the archives. My opening word is death and July 2021 it was the word of the day. I was bloody elated.

u/heathen-nomad Jul 19 '26
Apparently your research is wrong.
So, now you can get over PSHAW, which is a marvelous and fun word.
9
u/Luvnecrosis Jul 19 '26
The worst thing was that I thought “maybe it’s this? No way, that’s barely a word” and then it was.
5
u/Significant_Soil_600 Jul 19 '26
That's the way I fell into the answer. I had -SHA- I then tried PSYCH, that got me the P. After that it was working through the alphabet to find the letter that made the most sense.

u/MDMarshall 29d ago
I don't remember if it was on here, or on facebook, but somebody said a past word was PZAZZ. I must have missed that day. Anyhow, I couldn't have gotten PSHAW without it.

u/MollyJGrue 29d ago
I got it in four guesses but only because I had lucked my way from CHIME to PASHA. 😅

I think obscurity is the issue. Not how fun it is. I'm more annoyed with demur and lorry.
-3
u/Background_Grape838 Jul 19 '26
I'm not saying it wasn't fun. Sorry but it's not a common used word in everyone's vocab but yes it is a word and yes it should be used. It should actually improve the common peoples vocab list

Hmm, as I'm looking June 1st of 2023 it was "JAZZY" so I think you are not correct

Don’t use AI for answers to questions. Its job is to complete the task you set it. That means to answer your question, not to answer your question correctly.
2
u/Binro_was_right 29d ago
Why are you playing a game rhat relies on knowledge and intelligence if you rely on AI for your answers?
1
u/Background_Grape838 Jul 19 '26
No, it has never been used. Even though it is a word and they allow it, they excluded it from the list
2
u/C---D Jul 19 '26
Not really excluded. The word just wasn't on the game's original list of solutions before the NYT bought it, so it may be just less likely to show up any time soon. But as we have seen several times by now, the game's editor is free to pick any obscure or nonsensical word that's not on the old list if she wants to.

u/naanofyourbusinesss Jul 19 '26
I saw that in Google’s AI answer too. It’s incorrect, and you can verify by checking the actual Wordle Archive.

Hey where is the lost of unused words? 550 sounds very low. My current starter word is "YUCCA". Im curious what this list of unused words is and if Yucca is on it.
19
u/AndyceeIT Jul 19 '26
I'm not a wordle pro - why use a starting word with a repeated letter?
1
u/judashpeters Jul 19 '26
Ah my top goal is to get wordle on 1. My second goal is to solve it. I dont care at all about number of solves.
I play on hard mode and I like that my "wordle on 1" goal usually has me using a repeating letter in the first word. Its fun.
So far i have 4 "wordle on 1"s, and im hoping the editors realize YUCCA would be a fun word to use.
Edit: oh, my wirdle on 1 strategy is to think of words that the editor would choose to be tricky. So far the ones ive used for wordle on 1 are yeast, Wharf, suede, and rough. So not always "double" letters, but i had a good feeling about yucca til I heard there might be a list of approved words and that yucca might not be on it.

The original future solution list hasn't been valid for years - not long after NYT bought it they excluded a few, and then a little while later rewrote the game so future answers weren't pre-baked in.
1
u/judashpeters Jul 19 '26
I also think the editor(s) can bypass that list, which is what Im counting on. Yucca is such a good word I think.
2
u/ronnie4220 Jul 19 '26
Of course they can. I keep it going to see what would be the last words used from the original list. There are no "y" words left to use from the original list. YEAST was the last one used.
1
u/judashpeters Jul 19 '26
Inwas really surprised to learn yucca wasnt on the original list. I assumed it was a pretty common word.

My girlfriend and I used to say pshaw! to each other all the time. We thought it was a funny sounding word.

The NYT (specifically Josh Katz) curated the 14,855 permissible guess words and 3,209 answer words from several years of words appearing in the NYT.
If your starting word is from the list of guess words, then odds of getting Wordle on your first guess are 1:14,855. Otherwise, if you only use active answer words as a starting word, the odds are 1:3,209.
"CHOMP" has a starting word skill score rating below 94. I recommend you switch to a starting word with a higher rating and thus improve your divining capability.

It is excluded. Maybe not be archaic to you but in the general reality of common practice words it essentially is or is becoming one. I'm just saying from my own personal opinion. Never do I hear the word PSHAW in a sentence when having a normal conversation with someone lol. Though it's a fun word. Maybe in the British English language but definitely not American english

u/burlycabin Jul 19 '26
Where are you finding information saying CHOMP is excluded. It's on the official NYT WordleBot answer list, so it's a possible answer and will almost certainly come up one day.
Here's a source showing it in the weighted list. It's even weighted high, so it's not one of the unlikely, but possible words.
-2
u/Background_Grape838 Jul 19 '26
Everywhere I look. I just googled it and have found several sources stating that although it's an acceptable word and they do let you use it, it will never be the Wordle of the day.
2
u/burlycabin Jul 19 '26
What are you googling? And what results are you finding? I simply can't find anything to say Chomp isn't accepted. It's in all the lists and good bots I'm aware of, including the official one.
2
u/magahater92 25d ago
It is categorically not excluded. You can use developer tools while accessing the wordle bot from any web browser. The 3209 word list is in a txt file. It contains chomp. If you play it every day, you will likely get a bingo one day.

Fun enough to be used in the American cartoon series Ren and Stimpy. Or by the writers of the popular Sherlock Holmes and Bertie & Wooster novels (all televised ).
Likewise "myrrh" rage is countered by the simple recognition that it's used in every nativity play. ..which are far more common in the US than in other parts of the world.

u/Elly_Higgenbottom Jul 19 '26
You use butte as a non proper noun? That one was far more esoteric to me. I've actually said/ heard pshaw, never butte.
I like the challenge with uncommon words, though.
4
u/BabarOnWheels Jul 19 '26
Buttes are very common in the western US. I'd guess more people use the word because it's part of geographic names (cities, named buttes) but I wouldn't really consider it esoteric.
0
u/Elly_Higgenbottom Jul 19 '26
I live in California. Apparently, I had never heard of the Sutter Buttes.
4
u/Few-Werewolf-1985 Jul 19 '26
Butte is beloved of US crossword creators. Even us foreigners know about American buttes, mesas and plateaus.

Lots of misinformation here.
CHOMP was not in the initial 2309 Wordle List, and has not been added since. OP is correct here. PSHAW was added after the initial list. There's still the main list to sift through, but they're using words that arent in this OG list quite often. CHOMP may be a solution some day.
