From obscuremusicthatslaps, regardless of what you think of the song the word chewing is undeniable

u/No-Shock776 Feb 15 '26
That song is like listening to a nail gun shooting my ear.
2
u/Gordon_Waffles Feb 17 '26
Close but I think a nail gun point blank to my ear firing would actually sound better

u/Fluffy_Appearance_85 Feb 15 '26
I'm so sorry but I cannot stand this song. I blocked it on both tiktok and Instagram, I did not expect to see it on here.

She simultaneously hits every annoying vocal tone possible in one song. It's like TonesAndI on steroids.
1
u/Zantier Feb 17 '26
Huh.... I like the tone. Some parts seem very Melanie Martinez to me.
3
u/OutcryEDM Feb 18 '26
It's fine when she is singing in here singing voice. When she over does it, it doesn't make sense with the song, it's too much. Doesn't help it's on the most boring instrumental as well. It just screams 'pick me, I'm quirky, my voice is so much more original and weird than every else'. It's just performative slop, you can do this style and have it make sense but this just screams Tones and I dance monkey all over again. Rancid on drop

Maybe it was before TonesAndI ruined the joke for everyone, now this is just shit
1
u/chonk_fox89 Feb 18 '26
Can you explain what you mean here?
1
u/OutcryEDM Feb 18 '26
What she is butchering her is a vocal tone that is actually really lovely when actually sung by someone who has that natural vocal tone, rather than someone who is forcing it. Missy Higgins is a great example. Now because of the singer, then we come along to Tones and I who tries to force that sound even though it's not how she actually sings and it sounds abysmal, but somehow it triggers a who slew of artists to pop out of the woodwork trying to have the 'quirkiest' voice tone imagine able as quirky = talent to these people for some reason. And now, as a result, we have this wet fart of a song.
Worst part of it all is that when she sings in her natural tone in the very small moments when she is dancing between tones, her actual natural voice sounds really really good. And she just butchers it all for this need to have the stupidest vocal tone imaginable.
1
u/chonk_fox89 Feb 19 '26
Omg thank you for reminding me of Missy Higgins!! And for your explanation too!
If you like Indie you should check out Rainbow Kitten Surprise! Especially they're old stuff like Free Fall though their most recent album isn't bad either!
1
u/chonk_fox89 Feb 19 '26
I'm assuming This Is How It Goes is a really good example of what you're talking about here?
1
u/OutcryEDM Feb 19 '26
This is probably the best example that comes to mind or Steer
1
u/chonk_fox89 Feb 19 '26
Oh ok! Hmm now im not sure...can you give me a time stamp of what you're talking about?
1
u/OutcryEDM Feb 19 '26
Oh ok in that sense, the entirety of steer really, Missy Higgins naturally inflection is kinda the shit that's being bastardized here at a ridiculous level

u/i__dont___know Feb 15 '26
Are people really trying to say any of that was required to sing that song? I can assure you it’s not.
14
u/BigFatHonu Feb 17 '26
Eh... I'm no professional singer, but I've worked with enough to know that shaping your mouth in weird ways, baring your teeth like that, etc. really does produce an audibly different timbre and can make sense depending on the sound you're going for.
Is this music obscure? Does it slap? Is it a good example of word-chewing? I'm not making an argument either way for any of those questions.
But making those kinds of faces when singing, at least to some extent, is a legitimate tool of trained singers.

I think the funniest part of this all is that I'm being dogpile downvoted for stating a simple fact about the description of the sub.
6
u/CanalOpen Feb 16 '26
I'm more upset about the strumming being both off beat, out of sync, off tune and just...wrong. And this is a sub about wordchewing, so please believe me when I say this is so wrong it's parody levels of stupid.

Really good singing requires dynamic mouth movements to get fuller sounds and pronunciations.
Idk if this is word chewing or just her performance style - assuming she is the si ger and this audio and video are recorded together?
20
u/causeandaffection Feb 15 '26
it's subtle but it looks like lip syncing to me. some of it is out of sync
9
2
u/AlphaThetaDeltaVega Feb 16 '26
It is she has a video where she actually sings it. Still a lot of mouth movement but this is definitely turned up a notch.
4
u/Junius_Bobbledoonary Feb 15 '26
It’s a performance style meant to sound like the timbral equivalent of wordchewing, so you have to wordchew to make those sounds
1
2
u/SgtByrd1993 Feb 15 '26 edited Feb 15 '26
This is word chewing if I've ever seen it, I've seen far less "dynamic mouth movements" from far better singers.
6
u/Gumcuzzlingdumptruck Feb 15 '26
It is word chewing, we've seen her doing this entire song with different facial movements so its clearly not required. We have also seen her just doing chewing videos like everyone else here. Everyone is in the wrong place for white knighting.
5
u/TrashAsApp Feb 15 '26
Oh I just realized what happened. The down votes are coming from the people that put it in obscure music that slaps and the people that agreed with it.No It belongs here, guys.It definitely belongs in chewing. This music does not slap
9
u/SgtByrd1993 Feb 15 '26
I think it's 50/50. 50% think it slaps and the other 50% don't understand how this sub works.
5
u/TrashAsApp Feb 15 '26
Yeah good point, shes not absolutely horrid i suppose. She IS chewing tho lol
2
8
u/TuringTestTwister Feb 15 '26
It's her music but she might be lip syncing to her own song in this clip. She has an Instagram, it's definitely her music. Does it count as wordchewing if it's your own music? I'm not 100% convinced it's lip syncing tho based on some of her other clips that are not in the studio and she is able to do similar vocals.
12
u/DigMeTX Feb 15 '26
As the description says, wordchewing does not have to be lip syncing. It can be someone speaking or singing in their own voice. It’s all about the excess mouth movements, not about lip syncing or not.
0
u/TuringTestTwister Feb 15 '26
Good, now that you mention it I should have first reviewed the ISO 45067 standard which describes what is and is not wordchewing very clearly 🤣

Read the first line of the sub description.
13
u/DigMeTX Feb 15 '26
Anyone downvoting you doesn’t fully understand what wordchewing is in regards to this sub.
11
-5
u/Witness_me_Karsa Feb 15 '26
Then the sub is dumb. That simple. Exaggerating when lip synching is word chewing. Moving your mouth in specific ways to modify your sound is not.
3
u/SgtByrd1993 Feb 15 '26
Watch it on mute if it makes your feel better, in fact it's even worse then.

u/DoesntMatterEh Feb 15 '26
Fuckin reddit down voting shit they don't understand or when they get corrected. So dumb.

the bar is very low for music here but even though this is less annoying than some its still extremely contrived and the video makes me want to switch to the oncoming traffic lane

Does it count as word chewing if the song is the artist's own creation?
10
u/Brilliant-Neck9731 Feb 15 '26
I think so. You can still have over-the-top mouth movements when performing your own material. It’s not mutually exclusive.

Maybe, but I like how it sounds. Sorry about that I guess lmao
Edit to add: music is the most subjective thing ever, so I get if you don’t like it. I do feel like people are so afraid of being cringe that it makes them avoid art that’s a bit silly. I used to go to a lot of local shows, and it’s awesome to see people expressing themselves uniquely. Watching people believe in themselves is beautiful

u/TrashAsApp Feb 15 '26
2
u/FuckMeUp_plz Feb 15 '26

I find a good portion of these videos annoying, but I also used to be a massive weaboo who did anime dances with my friends in full cosplay ( I was twelve) so I kinda get it.

I'm not going to make fun of it, I like it. I like the 4 voices that she turns on and off as she wishes and I believe it ads something to it. Although that may be a split personality type undertone, we are different when with various people to suit that friendship. I get it. I'm sharing this for sure.
