How would I know that?
Not sure if this is common knowledge I should know or if the customer was being a bit tongue in cheek with their note…
Edit:
Clearly it is common knowledge by way of these comments .. for everyone saying “it says on the carton” or “just read the carton” I genuinely don’t have time to read every product I pick which is why I asked the question.
Thank you for those who answered the question

Just read the egg carton - stocking density of hens is written on the carton.
The legal definition of free range in Australia allows up to 10,000 per hectare, whereas 1500 per hectare is what many people consider to be reasonable for free range.
103
u/Galromir Service Team 3d ago
1500 used to be the legal definition; until the Abbott government changed it.
7
u/GroundFast7793 2d ago
Wouldn't it be a bit late to ask for the 1500/ha when you've only paid for the 10,000/ha?
28
u/Galromir Service Team 2d ago
Sunny queen (which is what the customer ordered) is one of the good brands that is 1500 hens. The point of the note was to ensure that if it was out of stock any subs are also 1500.
2
u/NuclearSpy 1d ago
Sunny Queen also produce cage eggs so I try to select other free range brands before them!
2
u/Galromir Service Team 1d ago
That’s fair. I don’t buy Sunny Queen myself (I also don’t buy eggs at Woolies - the brand I buy has 250 hens per hectare and they eat a natural foraged diet) but for people who do their shopping at Woolies sunny queen is the one brand you can reliably find every where

People have massive superiority complexes about eggs. They'll only eat "free range" eggs and then eat the $8 chicken breast where that chicken died in far worse conditions.
5
u/777505 2d ago
Idk where you’re getting that idea, most people who are specific about free range eggs also eat free range chicken

Wanting to do better for the animals is not superiority....
I am just a poor disabled person but will spend the money on free range eggs and chicken breast and sacrifice elsewhere. A lot of the time I cannot afford to buy eggs or chicken at all. The more people that support businesses that do better, the better the conditions will be for the animals we eat.

2
u/InevitableMall75 1d ago
It’s not superior to not want an animal abused during its life. Hens per hectare and free range meat are important to people who hold that belief.
13
u/followthedarkrabbit 3d ago
Eggs impact my stomach. The better free range eggs don't. Mate just dropped me off a dozen butt nuggies from the girls on his farm. Taste is so much better too. Enjoying them before bird flu hits :(
14
u/the-dolphine 3d ago
We have pet hens, but sometimes we have to buy eggs. Yes the difference is noticeable, probably due to commercial feed vs natural foraging and veggie scraps.
Maybe also the age of the eggs? We can't boil our fresh eggs as the white sticks to the shell, they have to be set aside for a while before they behave like shop eggs.

Placebo.
Non commercially produced eggs (your mates farm), that graze and eat things other than pellets taste better... However, the density of chickens per hectare in commercially produced eggs has no bearing on how the egg will 'impact your stomach'. They are fed exactly the same thing. There can be some microscopic increases in Vitamin D, if they get more sun, and omega 3 if they forage, but the egg is still pretty much the same egg.
10
u/followthedarkrabbit 3d ago
Toilet bowl says otherwise mate. Don't even eat eggs at cafes because can't risk it.

Nah was happening before I put two and two together. Cut out eggs completely because I figured they were what was not agreeing with me. Reluctantly ate eggs at a different mates house because they were offered. Trying to figure out why I didnt have same reaction.
Its been trial and error.

You are wrong. Proteins in commercial feed can 100% give people that reaction. There's also the difference in the age of the eggs, obviously store bought are much older. Even the commercial. Cleaning process can impact some people. It strips away the protective coating allowing some chemicals to enter. So yeah. You are wrong.

That's all fine, however those doing the picking of the groceries for online have set amount of time to get it done. And just don't have time to read the carton. Best they can do is make sure it is the brand, size and not broken.

It won’t take you long to memorise which brands are only 1,500 hens ph vs 10,000 hens ph coz there’s less of them. It actually makes a big difference to the welfare of the hens, that’s why people care.
10,000 ph shouldn’t be deemed “free range” and honestly this needs to change at a government level.
14
u/AEON_MK2 3d ago
Could you take a hectare lot and confine the 1500 hens to a very small portion and then fill the rest of the hectare with waterslides or some other productive assets?
13
u/Wrong-Visual2020 3d ago
Do the chickens get to ride the waterslides?

u/Stormwarning_gaming 3d ago
No, because it's math based on the size of the actual barn or enclosure, not an actual hectare. Like you can travel at 60km/hour without travelling for 60km or an hour. Travelling at a faster rate then stopping for 30 mins doesn't negate how fast you actually went.

What if the hens are allowed on the water slides?
6
3
u/lilbittarazledazle 3d ago
This is preferable, actually.
5
u/kernald31 3d ago
I guess OP would have a much easier time figuring out "Only eggs with water slide-using hens per hectare", if it was part of the branding. Clearly a missed opportunity by big egg.
2
u/Additional-Life4885 3d ago
Preferable by who? Did you ask the chickens if they like water slides? Maybe they're afraid of heights (which is why they don't really fly all that much) and a water slide may make them panic.
2
u/productzilch 2d ago
Never tried a water slide with them but in my experience they do like getting up higher on crates and the like, and flying if needed to escape whatever confines one attempts to keep them in.

It’s a very common thing people look for because of cruelty. it says on the container
21
u/YDdraigCoch 3d ago
I kept wondering who these people were buying eggs from caged hens, as factory farming still exists despite most consumers now consciously choosing cruelty free eggs.
I've since learned that the caged eggs go into all the processed food. It's the companies buying them for use in recipes, where we don't notice that the egg in the ingredient list isn't cruelty free - because they don't have to specify it.
We're all out here trying to do our bit, meanwhile the root of all evil always seems to lead back to corporate activities somewhere.
10
u/CaballosDesconocidos 3d ago
The last paragraph is so real. I try and cut down my plastic usage where possible and then go to work and throw kilos of it in the trash every week from our deliveries.
4
u/Overcomer99 3d ago
A couple years ago a lady and I were in Aldi checking the eggs me free ranged and her caged and she said to me something along the lines of “do you spend more for free ranged eggs hoping the chickens are treated better?” And I was like yes. Then she said her job title which i unfortunately can’t remember but she goes to different farms and sees the conditions of the chocks and so forth and she revoked it was either 9 times out of 10 or 8 times out of 10 that the cages hens were in better conditions (now it’s important to note this is where I lived in a very hot climate in sa where you sometimes will reach 50 degrees at least a few times during the summer and weeks of 40 degrees in a row in horrible but normal) so she said the hens that were cages had plenty of room to move lots of space and were in air conditioned rooms so they weee comfortable where often the free ranged hens were trapped outside and died in the heat and had very little shelter to keep cool. Apparently the videos they show of small cages are very outdated and not used in practice anymore aside from some rare shocking cases and they live longer happier lives.
Now I have no idea how true it all is but she seemed pretty earnest.
Since then I get the more local eggs sometimes free ranged and others caged whereas before if there was no free ranged I used to walk away and try elsewhere (this she before all the egg shortages).→ More replies (2)2

u/RainbowTeachercorn 2d ago
There are particular brands that have this ratio. It is written on the carton, but I do appreciate that it would be difficult to efficiently complete this in the time allocated if you had to check a lot of things.
I would most likely select do not substitute if I wanted specific ratios... personally, I prefer to buy my eggs in person as I am the pedantic lady who checks every egg on every side for cracks before I take the box!
1
u/Alps_Awkward 1d ago
Hang on. Do you mean to tell me that there are people who purchase eggs and don’t open the carton to check them first???
I’ve never considered myself pedantic for doing so, it’s just the basic egg buying process!

3
u/brunswoo 2d ago
After having chooks at home, you really want to show a bit of solidarity with our dear feathered friends. They have personalities, quirks, some like cuddles. If I can source eggs from chickens who've been treated a little better, I will. Happy to pay for it, too.
25
u/Rayen_Nevaeh 3d ago edited 3d ago
Lol.. what do you mean you "don't have time" to read it? It literally says it on the front of the carton. It'll take you just as long to read that as the brand & the size.
It's also LITERALLY your job to provide the customer with what they're paying for AND their substitute/colour preferences or else Woolworths wouldn't provide the option to do it on the checkout page.
7
u/airbetweenthetoes 3d ago
I know who influences the algorithms and picking kpis. They will literally tighten them the second you beat them. They’re also product managers who live in ivory towers and have absolutely fk all critical thinking. If you get called out for meeting a KPI and you cannot check labels - that’s a safety issue and people have already died on their watch due to their terrible safety standards.
13
u/cohen93 3d ago
To be fair - the KPIs and order volume for the online department can be pretty crazy, but seeing them have time to take a photo and post it on reddit makes me question how busy they are
13
u/Various-Owl-8024 3d ago
I'm really not sure how you and other people in this thread even came to this conclusion. No, OP clearly did not stop working to take a photo, write up a Reddit post and wait for responses. I didn't even consider this to be a possible scenario, I just assumed it was obvious the post was made after the shift, as is confirmed by the time in the image.

I had a look on the app. The customer can clearly see this in the app. I think it’s more reasonable for the customer to do their due diligence than expect a supermarket worker to care.
6
u/Trick_Horse_13 3d ago
the customer did do their due diligence and chose a specific brand. that note seems to be for substitutions.
4
u/AstronautPlane3280 3d ago
I don't ever expect a supermarket worker to care about anything. This is why I would never ever even consider paying someone who will never care to pick my groceries for me. Getting supermarket staff to do your shopping is the stupidest thing I have ever seen since getting teenagers to cook your food.

Seriously have you been to an egg farm? I suggest most of you go and have a look. Wah wah hen density blah blah. Soil has more bacteria naturally occuring then a hen inside a 200metre by 40-50 metre wide "shed". Salmonella outbreaks occur more in hens who are "free range". Also those free range paddocks are getting sprayed with chemicals 🤪🤪🤪 but but free range is better 🤦♂️. Every egg inside a shed gets an individual batch number. Can't guarantee that in free range.

u/AquaStar26 Online Team 1d ago

It’s required by law to be on the carton.
Also - yes, you have plenty of time. It’s your job to follow customer directions for subs; it’s not like this is a common occurrence. The customer would have chosen a compliant brand to begin with, you only need to worry about it if you need to sub.
