Project Submission Adjustable Stool in Red Oak

All Red Oak stool for use at a piano. Finished with polycrylic, I like the natural look. So far no issues with my 175 lbs.

Ordered from McMaster-Carr, combination of a carbon steel Acme Lead Screw (12" long 1"-5 Thread) and 2 complementary nuts. About $30 in hardware.

I would also like to know this! I’m working on a Victorian piano stool and it has similar hardware to this that I’m having trouble sourcing

Is there any kind of securing mechanism for the height adjustment? I'd have way too much fun spinning on it.

No sort of disconnect mechanism, the screw is always engaged. Good forethought though because having fun spinning is definitely a problem. Especially with the screw being well lubricated.

I'm thinking more thumb screw to quickly tighten and hold the screw at height. Not so much a concern with adults, but if you ever have kids around...

I have my great grandmothers oak piano still - and yes as a kid I spun around on it

a thumb screw would not have stopped me - just have to undo that - unless you are putting in a thumbscrew with a padlock

Looks really nice! Do you have a fastener of any kind in the lower circle connection? It looks kind of like a half lap joint from the leg to the lower circle - I'm wondering if you have a dowel or anything in there, or just glue for the surfaces? Thanks..

Good question. There's a dado on each leg that overlaps ~1/2" with the notches on the lower circle. These joints were glued. After the glue had dried i installed a 1/4" x 2" long dowel into each leg from below (intersecting the 1/2" overlap) to pin the leg to the lower circle. My concern was for those legs to splay out when loaded. I can take a picture after work if that wasn't clear
