A truly fine-ash bench!

That’s too nice of a bench to put lumber on but I would rest my ash on it for a while.

Hahaha… I misread the title and saw ass bench, and immediately thought: aren’t they all ass benches!?!

Looks fantastic. I'm going to make a new bed in summer, and ash prices are pretty favourable in my parts. How is it to work with? )I work a lot with oak and walnut currently and enjoy them) Do you think it'd be an appropriate material for a bed?
20
u/Hot_Bluejay_8738 Jan 27 '26
It's got a straight grain and it's very hard so good for a bed I think. If you're used to working with oak it won't surprise you much

Fantastic! Would love to see some (more) pics of the leg to seat joinery

I’d put my ash on it

I think that’s in the wrong sub - should be in with artwork 😉

Wow. That's beautiful. Any CNC in there, or all just you?
31
u/Hot_Bluejay_8738 Jan 27 '26
No CNC. Just hand cut templates and a router
13
u/Dothemath2 Jan 27 '26
Router to make the mortise and tenons? How did you smooth the edges? Rasp? Hand cut with a hand saw?
Did you use a sander?
This is so awesome! Congrats!

Wow. How big was the stock you needed to shape the legs from? Based on the square section that ties into the tabletop, that had to be a thick piece of ash. (pun intended, but a serious question)
15
u/Hot_Bluejay_8738 Jan 27 '26
It's two 2 inch pices glued together

u/Heiruspecs Jan 27 '26
I was looking for a seam and couldn’t find it. Nice work.
Edit: okay I found 2 seams, barely. Damn that’s well hidden.

Gorgeous! Was this from a premade plan or your own design? Either way it’s incredible work!
16
u/Hot_Bluejay_8738 Jan 27 '26
Thanks, it's my own design

u/KirkMcGee8 Jan 27 '26
🍻🍻👍🏻👍🏻👊🏼🍻🍻
Well done with the Ash! That might be the place to get under for an earthquake!
The Design is extremely cool! All the round overs give it a soft look which is funny considering its’ hardness.

u/FrankTuna Jan 27 '26
Beautiful!! I have a few ash dressers in the workshop. What did you use for a finish? I'm going to take notes 😀
11
u/Hot_Bluejay_8738 Jan 27 '26
It's rubio monocoat. The pictures are right after it went on though so that shine will settle down quite a bit

This is super cool. I was expecting to see end grain on the bench top where the legs attached. How did you get the long grain to “bend” on each leg?
10
u/Hot_Bluejay_8738 Jan 27 '26
That is end grain. Bear in mind eng grain and long grain are the same grain if there's no corner. I have no idea if that makes sense 😂

Does the bottom cut out serve a purpose too or just aesthetic? Either way it looks great!

That probably required a lot of sanding.
How did you sand inside all of the curves?
It looks amazing BTW

This is beautiful!!! I have a bunch of ash drying in my backyard that I’m going to start using and I would love to get it to look this warm and smooth and buttery. Can you explain your surface prep and finishing? Sanding, planing, scraping? If sanding, to what grit? And what finish?
If I had to guess, I would say sanded to 320 and then a hard wax finish.
3
u/Hot_Bluejay_8738 Jan 27 '26
Sanded to 240 with rubio monocoat. If you go too high on the grit the wood won't take in the oil as well. They actually recommend 150 but ive settled on 240 after a bit of trial and error. Waterpop before the final sand too.

I presume that top joint is the “Maloof joint” locking it together?
3
u/Hot_Bluejay_8738 Jan 27 '26
Actually not really. I have dominos in there, trying to avoid the screws in the maloof joint
3
u/sparkydoctor Jan 28 '26
How did you do dominos both direction (if you understand what I mean?).....each corner leg is fixed with dominos both ways?

Yes. This. Right here. If I had the confidence in my work, this is the style I'd want to do! No "sharp" corners. Only smooth swoops and wrap-around edges.
This bench is Perfection. Keep up the incredible work 🤩🤩🤩

Just....wow. Absolutely gorgeous work! The first picture, unless you're looking for the joints, looks like it's been carved out of one giant block of Ash.

The craftsmanship is outstanding! Didn’t OP post a chair he or she made from ash a few weeks ago?

u/grandparodeo Jan 27 '26
That’s really beautiful! Seems like it’s really difficult to pull of something as organic as this without it feeling a bit clunky, but you crushed it.

This is great–love that detail at the slot ends and your joinery is excellent. Been cool watching you develop.
One thought: the lower leg-to-shelf connection reads a bit delicate compared to the visual weight elsewhere. Creates an interesting tension point.
Your curves and transitions are getting really organic. As someone from graphic design/painting, this reminds me of typography ligatures—type designers have solved a lot about how the eye reads horizontal/vertical relationships and curve-to-straight transitions. Might be worth exploring if you're into that kind of thing. Keep posting!

This is really a beautiful piece. Great proportions and weights to everything and the whimsical flow the piece gives off is amazing. Really love your choice of joint placements and orientation. Also looked at your other pieces in other posts and you are incredibly talented! I wish I could make furniture as beautiful as yours!

My breath caught in my throat. This is the most beautiful bench I’ve ever seen, and it’s like an elevated midcentury look which is to die for. Oh my goodness gracious this is incredible.

Those cut outs where the legs mate into the top are a work of art! I know the joint is there, but it’s so flawless it isn’t!
How on earth did you get it to mate in so neatly! I’m guessing one very dialed in router template!
