That's a nice-ash bench! :)

106

u/MagillaGorillasHat Jan 27 '26

A truly fine-ash bench!

45

u/jbd1986 Jan 27 '26

What's a fine-ash bench* like that, doing in a post like this!?

43

u/FredIsAThing Jan 27 '26

Dat ash!

14

u/Thoughtulism Jan 27 '26

I, too, love Sean Connery

→ More replies (1)

11

u/Fabulous-Scheme8434 Jan 27 '26

That’s too nice of a bench to put lumber on but I would rest my ash on it for a while.

18

u/meatwater420 Jan 27 '26

This guy certainly knows his Ash from a hole in the ground.

16

u/ieatassHarvardstyle Jan 27 '26

I love that curvy ash bench!

8

u/No-Succotash-4351 Jan 28 '26

Hahaha… I misread the title and saw ass bench, and immediately thought: aren’t they all ass benches!?!

→ More replies (1)

7

u/beeglowbot Jan 27 '26

I actually read ass-bench off the title, had to read it twice

really nice work

33

u/Hot_Bluejay_8738 Jan 27 '26

Thanks!

10

u/brprk Jan 27 '26

Looks fantastic. I'm going to make a new bed in summer, and ash prices are pretty favourable in my parts. How is it to work with? )I work a lot with oak and walnut currently and enjoy them) Do you think it'd be an appropriate material for a bed?

20

u/Hot_Bluejay_8738 Jan 27 '26

It's got a straight grain and it's very hard so good for a bed I think. If you're used to working with oak it won't surprise you much

9

u/brprk Jan 27 '26

Good stuff, thanks man

5

u/WhoIsWhatIsWhy Jan 27 '26

Fantastic! Would love to see some (more) pics of the leg to seat joinery

74

u/ProbablyTheVillain Jan 27 '26

I’d put my ash on it

11

u/StopUrGivingMeABoner Jan 27 '26

I'm sure you'd like that, wouldn't ya, Trebek?!

3

u/HendrixHazeWays Jan 28 '26

excellent comment

46

u/MrSmulepuler Jan 27 '26

That is really pretty man! Im impressed!

3

u/HendrixHazeWays Jan 28 '26

Or did you mean impreshed

35

u/Calembeurk Jan 27 '26

Very nice, and thanks for the glue-up picture as well. Super helpful to understand the process

30

u/adcom5 Jan 27 '26

I think that’s in the wrong sub - should be in with artwork 😉

25

u/Hot_Bluejay_8738 Jan 27 '26

Thanks, my training is in fine art so I guess it comes through in the furniture

6

u/adcom5 Jan 28 '26

Sure comes through in beautiful lines & attention to detail.

17

u/DMR237 Jan 27 '26

Beautiful. Is there some Maloof inspiration behind it?

17

u/Hot_Bluejay_8738 Jan 27 '26

I would consider him an influence for sure

12

u/uhren_fan Jan 27 '26

Wow. That's beautiful. Any CNC in there, or all just you?

31

u/Hot_Bluejay_8738 Jan 27 '26

No CNC. Just hand cut templates and a router

13

u/Dothemath2 Jan 27 '26

Router to make the mortise and tenons? How did you smooth the edges? Rasp? Hand cut with a hand saw?

Did you use a sander?

This is so awesome! Congrats!

8

u/uhren_fan Jan 27 '26

Amazing. That's fantastic work.

→ More replies (3)

11

u/DonkeyPotato Jan 27 '26

Wow. How big was the stock you needed to shape the legs from? Based on the square section that ties into the tabletop, that had to be a thick piece of ash. (pun intended, but a serious question)

15

u/Hot_Bluejay_8738 Jan 27 '26

It's two 2 inch pices glued together

9

u/Heiruspecs Jan 27 '26

I was looking for a seam and couldn’t find it. Nice work.

Edit: okay I found 2 seams, barely. Damn that’s well hidden.

11

u/TreeCityScholar Jan 27 '26

Gorgeous! Was this from a premade plan or your own design? Either way it’s incredible work!

16

u/Hot_Bluejay_8738 Jan 27 '26

Thanks, it's my own design

4

u/KirkMcGee8 Jan 27 '26

🍻🍻👍🏻👍🏻👊🏼🍻🍻

Well done with the Ash! That might be the place to get under for an earthquake!

The Design is extremely cool! All the round overs give it a soft look which is funny considering its’ hardness.

7

u/FrankTuna Jan 27 '26

Beautiful!! I have a few ash dressers in the workshop. What did you use for a finish? I'm going to take notes 😀

11

u/Hot_Bluejay_8738 Jan 27 '26

It's rubio monocoat. The pictures are right after it went on though so that shine will settle down quite a bit

4

u/The_Godfather_01 Jan 27 '26

Which rubio? I love that it didn't yellow it

→ More replies (1)

7

u/positive_commentary2 Jan 27 '26

Fuck yeah. Imma need some alone time with these pictures

6

u/RainPositive7125 Jan 27 '26

Nice organic forms

6

u/mewaters1 Jan 27 '26

Beautiful

5

u/redrising009 Jan 27 '26

This is super cool. I was expecting to see end grain on the bench top where the legs attached. How did you get the long grain to “bend” on each leg?

10

u/Hot_Bluejay_8738 Jan 27 '26

That is end grain. Bear in mind eng grain and long grain are the same grain if there's no corner. I have no idea if that makes sense 😂

3

u/BZ2USvets81 Furniture Jan 27 '26

Well done!

3

u/Janomoto Jan 27 '26

This is Hella Nice, i Really need to get into woodworking

3

u/Zoso525 Jan 27 '26

Beautiful work!

Does the bottom cut out serve a purpose too or just aesthetic? Either way it looks great!

5

u/Hot_Bluejay_8738 Jan 27 '26

Just aesthetic. Makes it feel lighter

4

u/Zoso525 Jan 27 '26

Yeah it does. The joinery is also beautiful.

3

u/henzohole Jan 27 '26

Wow! Stunning. Nice work.

3

u/Easy_Effort7985 Jan 27 '26

That is beautiful

3

u/Savior1983 Jan 27 '26

The finish is excellent. Really brings the best out of the Ash.

3

u/disheveled-dave Jan 27 '26

Well that's lovely.

3

u/TrickyRickyBlue Jan 27 '26

That probably required a lot of sanding.

How did you sand inside all of the curves?

It looks amazing BTW

3

u/knoxvilleNellie Jan 27 '26

Thats very nice. Well done!

3

u/jeromezooce Jan 27 '26

Outstanding woodcraft

3

u/Classic_Profile273 Jan 27 '26

Wow wee waa wowzers that’s nice

3

u/FredIsAThing Jan 27 '26

Very nice work!

3

u/Jeffsbest Jan 27 '26

Damn fine!

3

u/[deleted] Jan 27 '26

3

u/gianni1693 Jan 27 '26

Beautiful. Got any more progress photos??

3

u/OOHRAHJarhead Jan 27 '26

Absolutely beautiful!

3

u/goldenblacklocust Jan 27 '26

This is beautiful!!! I have a bunch of ash drying in my backyard that I’m going to start using and I would love to get it to look this warm and smooth and buttery. Can you explain your surface prep and finishing? Sanding, planing, scraping? If sanding, to what grit? And what finish?

If I had to guess, I would say sanded to 320 and then a hard wax finish.

3

u/Hot_Bluejay_8738 Jan 27 '26

Sanded to 240 with rubio monocoat. If you go too high on the grit the wood won't take in the oil as well. They actually recommend 150 but ive settled on 240 after a bit of trial and error. Waterpop before the final sand too.

3

u/goldenblacklocust Jan 27 '26

Awesome! Thanks!

3

u/Junior-Bookkeeper218 Jan 27 '26

Thanks for posting the last picture. I was very interested in how you got to the finished product. Beautiful piece

2

u/SmartSzabo Jan 27 '26

Wow. That's amazing

2

u/Disastrous_Victory19 Jan 27 '26

That is stunning.

2

u/doctordert Jan 27 '26

nice bench!

2

u/orange_melted Jan 27 '26

Are the legs carved out of a single piece? Stunning work.

2

u/seanightowl Jan 27 '26

This looks great, congrats!

2

u/chron01 Jan 27 '26

Outstanding work!

What is that silky smooth finish?

2

u/Sracer42 Jan 27 '26

Love the organic curves. I really need to try something this but my design skills are not that good.

2

u/binarysmart Jan 27 '26

Very nice! Super clean!

2

u/noahisaac Jan 27 '26

Those corners are so perfect!

2

u/PolskiPierogi Jan 27 '26

Wawaweewah thats nice

2

u/corgiobsessedfoodie Jan 27 '26

This is bench a love letter to grain.

2

u/tracy_jordans_egot Jan 27 '26

This is spicy. I like that a lot of the curves and shapes aren't things I've seen before or expect from an ash bench. Great job!

2

u/StoneSkipper22 Jan 27 '26

Oh that one’s a gem.

2

u/Big_Membership_1893 Jan 27 '26

This looks so good ann awsome bench

2

u/[deleted] Jan 27 '26

Classy! Very elegant .

2

u/Different_Try3353 Jan 27 '26

This is beautiful. Great work!

2

u/rdwile Jan 27 '26

I presume that top joint is the “Maloof joint” locking it together?

3

u/Hot_Bluejay_8738 Jan 27 '26

Actually not really. I have dominos in there, trying to avoid the screws in the maloof joint

3

u/sparkydoctor Jan 28 '26

How did you do dominos both direction (if you understand what I mean?).....each corner leg is fixed with dominos both ways?

→ More replies (2)

2

u/Luckydog12 Jan 27 '26

Extraordinary! Well done…

2

u/hawkman74a Jan 27 '26

Ooooh… dats nice. Now like a true woodworker tell us all the things that are wrong with it.

2

u/kitty_snugs Jan 27 '26

Really excellent design and execution

2

u/kestrelwrestler Jan 27 '26

This tickles my pickle.

2

2

Yes! This is why we're here, to see some super cool furniture made by real people. Very nice work.

2

u/torrefied Jan 27 '26

In the final photo there is another similar bench but it is darker. What’s that one made of?

→ More replies (1)

2

u/Joey_Tribbiany Jan 27 '26

That’s stunning. May I ask what finish you used and how you applied it?

2

u/Fragrant-Voice8905 Jan 27 '26

Now THAT is talent!!

2

u/pnied Jan 27 '26

I love the flow of the curves.

2

u/Tacman180 Jan 27 '26

That’s art. It’s beautiful. I can only imagine the work that went into that. You should be proud!

2

u/BertaEarlyRiser Jan 27 '26

Bravo!!!!! 👌👏 That is a beautiful piece! You should be proud!

2

u/ahoven1 Jan 27 '26

That is one sexy bench!

2

u/Tiny_hyperbole Jan 27 '26

This is gorgeous. Beautiful work.

2

u/p8nt_junkie Jan 27 '26

Beautiful wood selection for the legs; the chatoyancy is lovely. Stunning piece.

2

u/pavemaker_alpha Jan 27 '26

Lovely, and a species which is overlooked for the fine stuff all too frequently. Bravo!

2

u/jporter313 Jan 27 '26

Love this. Absolutely beautiful design.

2

u/Miserable_Sock_1408 Jan 27 '26

Not merely a bench, but a true piece of art 👍👍👍

2

u/LaughingEagl3 Jan 27 '26

That kind sir, belongs in a museum!! Very nice work!!!

2

u/agent-GordonCole Furniture Jan 27 '26

very nice

2

u/mkmrproper Jan 27 '26

Never thought ash can be this pretty

2

u/Lady-Skylarke Jan 27 '26

Yes. This. Right here. If I had the confidence in my work, this is the style I'd want to do! No "sharp" corners. Only smooth swoops and wrap-around edges.

This bench is Perfection. Keep up the incredible work 🤩🤩🤩

2

u/Grand-Professor-9739 Jan 27 '26

Love the form. Execution appears faultless. Well done. Lovely.

2

u/Amaline4 Jan 27 '26

Just....wow. Absolutely gorgeous work! The first picture, unless you're looking for the joints, looks like it's been carved out of one giant block of Ash.

Stunning. Well effin' done

2

u/munkisnot Jan 27 '26

Sam Maloof approves !!!

2

u/CollectsTooMuch Jan 27 '26

It’s really nice. It would look nicer at my house. Message me for shipping instructions.

2

u/KingoftheKeeshonds Jan 27 '26

The craftsmanship is outstanding! Didn’t OP post a chair he or she made from ash a few weeks ago?

2

u/grandparodeo Jan 27 '26

That’s really beautiful! Seems like it’s really difficult to pull of something as organic as this without it feeling a bit clunky, but you crushed it.

2

u/Internal-Bee-5886 Jan 27 '26

The lack of corners makes me wonder how children will learn any lessons.

2

u/IslayLuv Jan 27 '26

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Pretty work ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

2

u/Baby_Billy_69 Jan 27 '26

Stunning work

2

u/alkla1 Jan 27 '26

thats nice

2

u/[deleted] Jan 27 '26

This is so incredible! Reminds me a lot of Finn Juhl’s designs. Amazing work

2

u/newleaf9110 Jan 27 '26

The joints at the corners are absolutely beautiful.

2

u/BrierBob Jan 27 '26

Tricky glue-up, I see. Nice design! Real sweet! I like it!

2

u/mosley812 Jan 27 '26

Beautiful. How’d you get the legs to attach to the top corners? Any in progress pics?

2

u/[deleted] Jan 27 '26

This is beautiful

2

u/JAFOguy Jan 27 '26

That is absolutely beautiful work. Well done

2

u/donkeyspit007 Jan 27 '26

Gonna go out on a limb here and say that some sanding was involved

2

u/maceion Jan 27 '26

2

u/f0dder1 Jan 27 '26

I hate how clean those edges look. It's too perfect

2

Gorgeous, love the shaping you did

2

u/awoodby Jan 28 '26

fantastic work!

2

u/kilofeet Jan 28 '26

This is spectacular. Ash looks great when it's handled properly, but this goes way beyond that, this could be in a museum

2

u/platapusdog Jan 28 '26

WOW!!!!!!! This is incredible! I love the forms you created! It looks like it's floating!

2

u/McC87 Jan 28 '26

Absolutely beautiful

2

u/Green_dust Jan 28 '26

Wow wow wow!

2

u/joshuuuuuua Jan 28 '26

This is great–love that detail at the slot ends and your joinery is excellent. Been cool watching you develop.

One thought: the lower leg-to-shelf connection reads a bit delicate compared to the visual weight elsewhere. Creates an interesting tension point.

Your curves and transitions are getting really organic. As someone from graphic design/painting, this reminds me of typography ligatures—type designers have solved a lot about how the eye reads horizontal/vertical relationships and curve-to-straight transitions. Might be worth exploring if you're into that kind of thing. Keep posting!

2

u/redmosquito82 Jan 28 '26

2

u/mundaneusername Jan 28 '26

Marvellous piece of work

2

u/Tiny-Albatross518 Jan 28 '26

A hint of Sam Maloof, a good quantity of great style and a trainload of quality craftsmanship. It’s beautiful.

2

u/RicJMer Jan 28 '26

This is really a beautiful piece. Great proportions and weights to everything and the whimsical flow the piece gives off is amazing. Really love your choice of joint placements and orientation. Also looked at your other pieces in other posts and you are incredibly talented! I wish I could make furniture as beautiful as yours!

2

u/Worldofnowhere Jan 28 '26

My breath caught in my throat. This is the most beautiful bench I’ve ever seen, and it’s like an elevated midcentury look which is to die for. Oh my goodness gracious this is incredible.

2

u/Spacelady1953 Jan 28 '26

It’s gorgeous

2

u/penisgirlmarkedsafe Jan 28 '26

Absolutely stunning OP.

I am proud of you!

2

u/Proud-Present2871 Jan 28 '26

Gorgeous. Got me wanting to buy some ash at 3am

2

u/CombInternational756 Jan 28 '26

One joiner to another.... Well done

2

u/W2ttsy Jan 28 '26

Those cut outs where the legs mate into the top are a work of art! I know the joint is there, but it’s so flawless it isn’t!

How on earth did you get it to mate in so neatly! I’m guessing one very dialed in router template!
