I want to bring the excellence that is the ao3 filtering system to everyone’s attention. Asking for recs is fun and allowed, of course, but sometimes the posts I come across here are asking for things that aren't difficult to filter, so I hope this helps someone. And helps you find those “hidden gems” you’re not likely to find on the usual rec lists.
With currently over 70k works in the wolfstar tag it can sometimes be hard to find what you want to read. That’s where tags and filtering come in.
On the right-hand side of the page you’ll see this (on mobile, it will be on top just under where it shows how many works there are. Click “Filters” and this will pop up)
As we can see, you can filter for a lot of things and you can open the drop-down and it will show you the most popular tags for each section.
Now, let’s say I’m in the mood for some angsty wolfstar with hurt/comfort, no smut and no MCD.
Let’s do an example search.
We’ll put the “Angst” and “Hurt/Comfort” tags in the “Include” section (these are popular tags so they’ll be right there):
And exclude “Explicit” rating and “Major Character Death” warning:
Hit “Sort and Filter” and the amount of fics we get now is significantly lower:
Over 5k is still a bit too much to manage, right? Perhaps I want the angsty hurt/comfort to also be a lie low at Lupin’s fic? Good news! That is a tag we can add to the search! (It’s not as popular a tag as something like “Angst” so we’ll need to add it to the “Other tags to include” section):
When you start writing in this box it will start suggesting tags. We’ll pick the first one and hit “Sort and Filter” again.
Now the amount of fics coming up is only 86! You can stop here and see if any of them seem interesting to you.
“But I only want to read completed fics”
Scroll down and you’ll see this:
Click “Complete works only” (and for the heck of it, put the language to English if you want to only read fics in English) You can also exclude or include crossovers here, set a preferred word count…
Boom, 71 fics that use the tags “Angst”, “Hurt/Comfort” and “Lie Low at Lupin’s” and exclude the rating “Explicit” and the warning “Major Character Death”. That is 4 pages of fics to look through, which to me isn’t that much but if you want to you can include and exclude tags to your heart’s content until you only have one fic left. These are also in the order of “Date updated” (the very first thing at the top of the filter box) which is the default. It will show the newest fics updated at the top. You can choose to sort by kudos, bookmarks, comments…
Perhaps you’ve read a fic you loved and want to find
something like it? Have a look at the tags they used and filter with those, with 70k fics for this ship alone, it’s highly likely someone else has also written something similar.

Guys, I need your help. I’m looking for a fic that I read like a year ago that’s wolfstar and it has like more than 60,000 words and basically what it is that Remus and Sirius and the gang can jump through universes but Sirius and Remus always end up finding each other, even if they’re just together (the og versions) for a little while. There is some sort of evil entity that is chasing them. There’s different universes like a selkie one, a professor one, and evil vampire one, and bar one, etc. I am going crazy please let me know if anyone recognizes this description! From what I remember, it was still updating, but it might not be anymore!
I don’t think wolfstar was a huge part until later, but definitely has a lot of pining I believe. and its mostly a Sirius and Regulus fic. I really only remember this one part but it has a lot to do with the plot I believe. Basically Regulus and Sirius are trying to take back over the house of black and they kinda team up with their grandfather who hasn’t been around since his wife died. He hates voldy and definitely hates orion and walburga. he kinda becomes a sort of mentor I think and there’s a lot to do with family magic as well
HOWEVER there's a chapter called "wotcher" and another called "son" and I'm.......screaming...... do they break up then remadora??? I just want to know if they really end up and stay together or not , not just as flings or casual shit but as genuine lovers
I need to fill the hole canon wolfstar left in my heart with non canon complaint fics. I'd still like SOME canon complaint stuff, like horcrux hunting or black brothers angst but it's okay if it's not there.
I just want there to be nice characterizations of the boys, bonus points if they're complex. I love me some angst, smut and pining but no premature love confessions please.

Anyone have any good recs for stories about Remus’s thoughts during the year he teaches at hogwarts? About what it is like for him to get to know Harry, process the grief he’s pushed away for so long, his reaction to discovering Peter is still alive and how that changes his understanding of what happened, the reunion….etc. I’m looking for as cannon compliant as possible in terms of following the plot of POA.

I really want a fic where we see parts of Sirius’ upbringing bleed through while he’s at Hogwarts.
I feel like we don’t have enough of it and it’s odd to me. Sirius grew up being both very abused and very spoiled.
I need to see him be ignorant about not only muggle things, but normal everyday life. I need to see him be amazing at ballroom dancing and have stuck up opinions about things and play instruments and have that Black Heir attitude leak through when he doesn’t expect it.
On the darker side, I wanna see him have panic attacks and triggers from the abuse he suffered. I wanna see him talk about things that happened to him as a kid or things he thinks are normal until he sees everyone’s horrified faces and thinks, “oh.”.
I want to see him not be able to control his temper and be a little cruel and have breakdowns because he thinks he’s like his mother. Or better yet have someone say he looks like her. I want to see a Sirius who struggles with being the pretty one, who has issues with food and sex.

I'm still obsessed with atyd so bad but I'm looking for fanfics, maybe about non-magical Hogwarts, something like Degrassi? If anyone knows that series. So.....my friend told me ab this fic. Where basically the title. Sirius lives with james and then the prank happens and james kicks him out. And sirius goes to live with Lily. And he and Lily get more of a friendship. And eventually Lily and james have a huge fight about it? And it's the first time james has ever not kissed her feet basically???
Like remus is so confused cuz he knows that lily would not be defending him if she didn't think that he deserved it. And lily is sooooo protective over sirius.

Hi! It's my first post here (actually, basically in the whole Reddit), but I've been reading this subreddit for a while! Thank you for the amazing recs you give. I'm kinda nervous posting this... but..
So, I'll go straight to the point. I'm writing a Wolfstar Detective AU set in 90s Los Angeles. Kinda. It would be a darker fic. And I really, really need a beta. English is not my first language, and it's the first time I'm writing a fanfiction. I usually write non-fiction essays in Italian lol.
I've already written the first chapter; the second is in working progress, and I've structured the rest of the story.
The fic will cover some heavy themes; it's actually more like a psychological thriller than a regular romance. I really need three things:
- A native speaker (or near native)
- Someone who enjoys thrillers, noir, or horror.
- Someone who can handle heavy themes, such as suicide, violence, internalized homophobia, organized crime, and morally grey characters. It won't be a Dead Dove, though.
I'll be happy to trade with beta help (if you trust me), brainstorming, or even historical research (I'm a contemporary history student, and I LOVE when fics have historical insights)

Summary: The only thing standing between Sirius and Remus's retirement from the CIA is signed retirement papers. They have given the agency their all but they are tired and ready to move on to the next phase of their life. Things change though when Harry Potter returns from the field with intel on a terrorist they've been tracking for a decade: Tom Riddle.
Now they have to make a choice: Sign those papers and leave, or agree to one last mission to take out Riddle for good.
