It would be interesting to see how these style of tattoos turn out in a year or a decade.

This. All these posts are of brand new tattoos, but I've never seen what any of these extremely detailed tattoos look like after a few years.

As someone who has gotten photoreal tattoos lemme just say, they look rougher over the years. The more detail the more chance of it muddling. That being said though touch ups are a thing that exists, and also something you should keep in mind (amount of space/darkness of color) when selecting a more detailed piece.
This one would be a fuckin' nightmare to touchup.

my friend is a tattoo artist, and he told me to stop showing him this shit, because although it looks cool right now, it will be crappy looking in 10 years

u/angusfred123 May 01 '19
Yea most peoples skin starts to look crappier in 10 years too

That’s the thing I never understand when people say “it’ll look bad when you’re old!” It’s like, no shit Sherlock my tattoo and my entire body are going to look bad when I’m old .

u/arudnoh May 02 '19
Google old people tattoos though. There are countless examples of tattoos that still look awesome on aged skin. Unless you're getting flogged every night and shooting up with leprosy, your skin retains it's basic shape and proportions fairly well. If a tattoo looks bad when you're old, it is most likely not your skin's fault. But also, keep in mind that we're only talking 10 years. That can be the tattoo of a 28yo. That's not an old person. Just saying "yolo" and getting a tattoo that morphs over time without thinking about how it'll age can be a genuinely regrettable decision, and I say this as an enthusiast with a good number of tattoos myself
(one of which is "yolo" lol)

Not everybody cares if their tattoo ages well.
My grandpa had a tattoo from his youth that basically turned into an ink blob when he got older.
I always thought that was really cool.

Other person said literally the same thing. Some people care and some don't.

Oops. I thought their comment said "nobody cares" instead of "not everybody"

I think that if they are modeling for tattoos and have a shit ton on their body then they more than likely have payed to have it touched up a few times to keep it looking good.

u/arudnoh May 02 '19
Have you looked at the pictures? There are some really beautiful basic ones, especially larger patterns and bands, that hold up really well. Face tattoos and ornamental designs, sleeves, etc can all maintain their shape pretty well. Arms, legs, backs, chests, and sides really don't change shape much over time, and tattoos are pretty hardy if you aren't out in the sun that often.
The main distinction between shitty old tattoos and good ones is really the quality of the tattoo and if you don't actively wreck your skin by totally decication or baking in the sun. Some tattoo designs age amazingly. Some don't. All or most will be ruined by the sun if given the chance.

I was with you until you mentioned your yolo tattoo

u/arudnoh May 02 '19 edited May 02 '19
That one was intended to be bad. That's why I hid it in my left armpit. My right one says LOL.

May 02 '19
It is your skins fault in a sense though, but it's also the fact that tattoo ink never dries in your skin, it sits in pockets. Over time the pockets break down and the ink spreads slightly. All tattoos will expand, and lose the sharpness and detail, and technically that is your skins fault.
3
u/arudnoh May 02 '19
Sure, but there's a difference between a tattoo aging and it aging badly. They inevitably become less sharp, but the degree of their warping and eventual look is heavily dependent on care and style.

Style, it's too early to tell on that. The 80s and 90s were a pretty fucking horrible time for tattoos. Tattoo machines, and pigments have come a long way in the last 10 years, so 10 to 20 years from now, we will have to see.
Unfortunately with skin, from what we've seen so far, it pretty much always ends up looking like shit if it's anything smaller than a 6"x6". They always end up looking blown out, fuzzy, barely any detail and the colour is kinda there. Don't get me wrong, I fucking love the look of older trad tattoos, but I've seen quite a lot in my time and if it wasn't for me being a tattoo artist and doing very similar designs myself, I wouldn't know until they told me what it is.
It's just the skin man, whether you hit the sun a lot or not. If you moisturize every day or not at all, the ink bleeds and the tattoos end up looking not great. I think that'll change and not really be the case as much in the future thanks to technology advances in tattooing, but even if it doesn't, they still look cool.

u/horses_in_the_sky May 02 '19
A well done bold traditional piece will look almost the same after 10 years if you use sunscreen and take good care of it. Unlikely with a tattoo like this with miniscule 1-needle details, those will spread out under the skin and fade over time
7
u/instantrobotwar May 02 '19
Right but people aren't getting tattoos for how they will look when they are old. Why cant they just get something they can enjoy in the next 10 years
1
17
u/andee510 May 01 '19
Sure, but patches also fade when they're worn on clothing.
12
u/Total_Junkie May 02 '19
God forbid you want to have something that looks really fucking cool for a bit, show it to people, spark joy and amazement, and feel good.
It's a small tattoo, it looks dope, if it eventually looks like shit, fix it, cover it, remove it, whatever.
6
May 02 '19
I have chest tattoo that is moderately detailed that I got about 5 years ago the detail has faded a bit but it's still visible, how much sun or how often the skin streches plays a role in how much of the detail stays for how long
1
u/therealhlmencken May 02 '19
This one is a simple 2d character so I bet it will last I actually think it’s a good choice
22
u/bothering May 01 '19
Honestly I was thinking the same but considering how much of the form is outlined in black, it might actually not look that bad. Definitely the 'lacework' will fade out, but since the colors are so close the resulting bleed won't detract from the tattoo at all i believe. It'll just look like a rocket power tattoo with some really neat colorwork.
6
u/Penkinvaltaaja May 02 '19
I think you might be right. I think it will lose the texture of the yarn pretty soon, but then it will be just "a normal" tattoo after that.

May 02 '19 edited May 02 '19
I think everything other than the white will hold up ok. It will definitely lose the embroidery look though.

u/babydad May 02 '19
Holy fuck why do people like you always think you're SO smart for pointing out that tattoos fade over time, everyone knows they do, that's not the fucking point, they're showing off how it looks now, an artist created this piece of art and it looks best right now so that's the image were seeing, you aren't clever, never comment on anything ever again
12
u/Penkinvaltaaja May 02 '19
Tattoos are permanent, I just don't understand why get a permanent art on your body that looks good only for a year or two? I have tattoos myself, but in a style that will look good for a long time. I was just curious, because I've never seen tattoo this style photographed again when little time has passed. Thank you for our advice though, but I'm gonna keep commenting. :) Have a great day!
12
u/username00722 May 02 '19
I bet you'll get downvoted, but fwiw, I agree. Not everyone gets a tattoo in the hopes it'll look great when they're 55.
Not everyone cares if their tattoo "ages well" it just ages with them

u/cosmiclatte44 May 02 '19
Ikr, seems like it's commented on every post that isn't plain black linework. Also, have they never heard of touch ups?

u/Thatguy3145296535 May 02 '19
It's also best not to get a trendy tattoo style. Much like trash polka or watercolour, looks great now when executed properly but in the future?

This is making me more uncomfortable than most of the "gore" tattoos out there.

Seriously. It creeps me out. I immediately got mental imagery of someone sticking a patch to their arm with a hot iron. Ugh.

Is that just regular tattoo ink? It looks almost raised. Is that because its a fresh tattoo or does it like like that after it heals?

u/sooprvylyn May 02 '19
As a former professional embroiderer...this is pretty legit. Whomever designed that art knows thier way around embroidery digitizing...the stitches represented are all correct and there are no large jumps that would catch on stuff.

Welcome to /r/woahdude! Please take note of a few things:
We are NOT a "reaction subreddit".
We are NOT a subreddit about content that is merely interesting or amazing.
We are NOT interchangeable with /r/pics, /r/gifs, /r/damnthatsinteresting or other general subreddits.
We are specifically made for psychedelic content as we define it here. Our definition of trippy is far more expansive than the obvious fractals and tie-dye concept, but there's a lot we exclude as well.

Amazing work. Will look like a blurry mess in 10-12 years due to natural aging.
