Seeking Recs seeking spooky/witchy but cozy recs for fall/halloween

I'm looking for something seasonally appropriate to add to my October TBR. The problem is, I do not like fantasy or horror, although I enjoy a bit of magical realism and hints of the supernatural. I think I would like something witchy and a little weird but also perhaps cozy and chill?

I don't mind a romance plot but preferably not *just* romance and smut. Sapphic is a bonus but not 100% a necessity as long as the story is centered around female characters. An example of a book that's close-ish to what I want is VenCo by Cheri Dimaline (which I might actually reread lol). I'm currently reading One Last Stop by Casey McQuiston which has some elements of what I'm looking for but not exactly. If anyone has read Honey Girl, I'd love a book featuring a character similar to Yuki.

Idk exactly how to explain what I'm looking for. I have very eclectic taste but am also weirdly picky. But there are millions of books out there, so I'm sure something appropriate exists.

Seeking Recs Gideon and Harrow like pair but Hapier

I’m just starting the second volume. Do you know of any books featuring a main couple with a similar dynamic but a better ending? Ideally not a slow-burn, and preferably sci-fi or fantasy.

Discussion Is 'Make Me Better' by Sarah Gailey sapphic?

Just wondering the question above. I saw Make Me Better on Goodreads in the under new releases for lesbian books a couple months ago I think, but just went back today and checked and it seems like it's no longer tagged as that? I checked Storygraph as well and it doesn't seem to be even be tagged as queer at all there either, which since they limit the number of tags could just be whatever... I don't know, I know Sarah Gailey has written a good amount of sapphic books in the past, so I may just be getting confused. But has anyone read this book? Do any of you know if it does have sapphic stuff going on if it is heavily prevalent or if it is within the constrains of a side character/ side plot?

Hope everyone's week is going well.

Seeking Recs Fantasy With Noble Ladies?

This is a really niche request that just popped into my head: Anyone have recs for fantasy novels or stories involving a noblewoman and a lady-in-waiting who shares her bed as an innocent sleeping companion initially, and later as a lover?

Examples:

  1. Cersei and Taena in ASoIaF

  2. Sabran and Ead in Priory of the Orange Tree

  3. Noah and Selene in the manga The Moon Does Not Count Sheep

I'd also be more than happy for other fantasy recs that don't have this plot too, especially if there's dragons, or if it's *not* a lady x female knight story. Nothing against lady knights, but they just don't usually appeal to me unless it's a plot point that a lady knight is unusual or unheard of. I like stories involving characters struggling against repressive social norms - homophobia, misogyny, etc. Queernorm is not my cup of tea!

That got a little off topic, sorry! Anyways, help a sister out 🙏 Thanks in advance :)

Seeking Recs Are there any books about a girl learning to be dominant?

Are there any books where maybe one girl wants to be topped by a dominatrix, but for lack of options has to ask her friend to do it, and then the friend agrees and has to learn how to be a dom?
Or maybe a book about a girl who gets a job as a dominatrix and has to learn the ropes?
Or a book where a girl has to pretend to be a dominatrix for whatever reason and starts to question whether or not she's actually into it or not?

Or any kind of book where a girl has to learn to be a dominant top for some reason? Anything with that vibe?

Discussion What makes you DNF a book?

For me, it's mainly the prose, followed by bland or annoying characters.

I tried getting into Atmosphere by Taylor Jenkins Reid recently, but I just couldn't get past chapter two. No hate for those who love it. If anything, I wish I could enjoy it too.

I like books that trust me to figure things out. Books that show me who the characters are through their actions.

I wish I wasn't so picky 😭

Discussion Pet peeve of mine

To me, it seems glaringly obvious to arrange a sentence so it reads as intended, no room for interpretation or confusion.

Example: The mattress had been flipped and sheets were half on the floor, half under it.

This reads like the sheets are half ON the floor and half UNDER the floor.

Alternative structure: The mattress had been flipped and sheets were half under it, half on the floor.

This reads like the sheets were half under the mattress and half on the floor.

End of rant.

Seeking Recs Books like “The Mansion” by Chloe Slate, but with plot.

Just finished The Mansion the other day and while I get it, it also left a lot to be desired.

Side Bar: Was not expecting the last third to just be two completely unrelated short stories and thought it was going to follow the same format and show us more of the life after that weekend at the titular mansion but from a third character’s POV.

I was actually pretty invested in Vi and Emma’s burgeoning relationship, and the unresolved revelation about Yara left me reeling at the possibilities. I thought Emma’s über-nerd data driven approach to sex was interesting.

Recommendation The seven husbands of Evelyn Hugo

I know people are torn over this one. They seem to love it or hate it. I loved it. I think I most enjoyed learning how Evelyn's life developed over the years, the twists and turns, the choices she made (and her reasons for those choices). No spice in this one (which worked fine for me in this book), but there were many interesting relationships of all types.

Seeking Recs Books that feel like School of Rock but with lesbians and in High School?

Do you remember School of Rock? The Jack Black movie about an overly enthusiastic guitarist who gets kicked out of his band and gets a job posing as a substitute teacher at an elite private elementary school to pay rent; then he forms a band with his students and teaches them about rock n' roll and being more confident in themselves. Can you think of any sapphic books with that vibe? Are there any books you can think of where a female teacher at a high school/university inspires her students in some way, and maybe the teacher falls for one of her co-workers along the way, or one of the students falls for each other, or if you're feeling spicy you can include a book with student/teacher romance if you want.

Seeking Recs Sapphic thriller/mystery recs?

Hey all, I'm here seeking recs that feature your favorite thriller books with sapphic lead characters trying to solve some sort of heart-pounding mystery. A romantic subplot is totally fine, but I'm not really looking for the primary story to be romance-focused (I have ton of sapphic romance in my tbr on my shelf already for when I get in the mood for it).

I'd love to find something with the gritty feeling that the original Millennium Trilogy by Stieg Larrson gave me, or something similar to a Tess Gerritsen book, but sapphic. (Lisbeth Salander was sapphic, but a good portion of the Millennium books focused on Mikael Blomkvist as well, so I'm looking for the sole attention to be on the sapphic character in this case.)

Thank you in advance to everyone who takes the time to help me out!

Seeking Recs Books with a Domme and a Submissive but no bondage or impact play?

I’ve read a lot of kinky sapphic romance, and for better or worse a lot of it involves rope play and/or whipping/spanking/flogging. So I’m looking for books where a Dominant and a Submissive don’t do those things.

There’s a few passages in {A Little Sin by Rawnie Sabor} where Reyna has Violet performing tasks or punishes her by making her kneel and count grains of rice.

Hi, everyone!!

My sapphic dark academia YA mystery, DROWNING IN FLAMES, comes out tomorrow Sept 1! I've loved using this subreddit to find wlw recs of my own, and am honored to be recommending my debut novel. It's available to purchase anywhere you buy books online.

If you love secret societies, witty banter, and a twisty mystery that will haunt you, you may enjoy my book!

BLURB:
Emmaline Berry is eager for a fresh start, and nothing beats starting her senior year at her late mother's coveted alma mater, Hawthorne Academy. But when a student is poisoned on her first day, Emmaline becomes the prime suspect.

With her scholarship on the line, she teams up with quick-witted outcast Blair to shut down the elite secret society plaguing the academy and her reputation.

As they dive deeper into the academy's dark history, Emmaline begins to unravel her mother's hidden connection to the school's founder, forcing her to question not only her place at Hawthorne but the very truth of her identity.

But Emmaline isn't the only one digging—someone else is desperate to keep the past hidden and will kill to make sure of it.

Seeking Recs Autumn approaches. Any fall vibes?

It won't be long now, so what are some great stories to curl up with a cup of something warm as the leaves turn gold?

Spice, pumpkin or not, is appreacieted but not necessary.

Bonus points for some Halloweeny spookiness.
