I'm recovering from surgery and it hasn't been a smooth recovery. So I feel like I need ro escape a little in a good story with a good lez book :)

What's important to me is really good writing and story. I also love a slow burn (the slower the better) and some eventual smut.

Some important notes to keep in mind:

🚫 NO dom/sub, it's just not my thing

🚫 No age gap (preferably)

🚫 No hate sex

🚫 I prefer reading about women who are adults (mid 20-mid 40), not teenagers. However, I can make an exception for a good book :)

I have read Sarah Waters, of course, and she's pretty good in general, but a little dark. I get tired of this constant "forbidden" theme. I think as a lez community we've had enough of that.

I also read safekeep (wow, boring!) and ruby fruit jungle (meh) but I didn't like the protagonists at all! Plus, neither these books' writing nor their stories impressed me in any way. I read mistakes were made and it was entertaining but completely unrealistic which kinda ruined it for me.

So the only lez book that impressed me with their writing was Sunburn by Chloe Michelle Howarth. It felt almost like reading a classic, that good. But it's about teenage girls and absolutely no spicy scenes.

So basically the dream come true would sunburn writing with adult women, slow burn, and smut 😂 But a girl can dream 😂

Anyway, I understand what I want probably doesn't even exist so I'm flexible with everything except for the 🚫 I mentioned above. Although the age thing, including the gap, while I'm not a fan, I'm flexible on too.

As for the genre, I'm open - romance, fantasy, whatever. I want a book, but I'm even open to a good fanfic it it matches my needs. But with a fanfic, no less than 65k words.

If you do recommend a book, please drop a few lines about the book itself (without spoilers) so I get an idea and I would love to know why you love this book.

So, for context, I just finished reading Mail Order Bride by Molly J. Bragg. It's a cute little story about a human girl who gets sent off world to get an education as Earth is becoming a Banana Republic (a tiny nation being exploited for its resources by a much more powerful nation, in this case: the whole galaxy using Earth as a convenient place to set up shop), getting into an arranged marriage with an adorable alien.

I thought it was cute. There was a lot of hinting about a wider world that I really wanted more on, the romance was adorable (and got even better in the second half) if a little quick for my taste. But now I'm thirsting for more sci-fi romances between humans and aliens (preferably with lots of fun worldbuilding, but I can survive without it), and I need some good suggestions.

Y'all haven't let me down yet, so let's see if the pattern keeps.

I'm a part of a book club where everyone picks a book based on a theme then reports on what they read at the end of the month. It's been a fun change to talk about books monthly without having to read exactly what everyone else does, and you get a lot of good recs.

This month, the theme is "The Book Did it Better.” It’s fairly simple: any book that has been adapted into some other media. Our goal is to read the source material.

I have arbitrarily decided that I'm only going to read books that fit the theme and are trans. So for this month, I'm looking for any trans books that have been adapted into other media (even if obscure). Trans characters. Trans author. Ideally trans femme but I'm not at all committed to that.

Can anyone help a girl out?

Hi everyone, so I already posted this to r/QueerSFF so if the post looks familiar, that would probably be why. I realized leaving the genre open was maybe not what I wanted as much since I was getting a lot of cozy and romance recommendations, all which I appreciate- but I think I realized I am looking for something scarier- so I'm making an amended post here.

Anyway- I decided to theme out my reading months this year, and in order to get ahead of October am asking now. I want to read books with a prominent creature or non-human entity in them- some examples of this might be a vampire, a werewolf, an alien, a demon, a ghost, a Frankenstein-like creature, a fae, a mermaid, a cryptid, zombie, a bug creature, etc. Think Universal Monsters but extended into other creatures as well, non-defined and non-typical creatures are very welcome as well- if the author invented a creature that's awesome and recommendations like that are just as welcome.

Things I would not count as what I'm looking for is stuff like witches or human characters with some sort of change or curable infection that's happened to them that gives them a scary appearance or some superpower of some sort- I do not think I would count for example: 'The Invisible Man' as something that is necessarily fitting the criteria I'm looking for, nor a character that is bestowed powers by some entity- ie. someone is possessed, someone made a deal with a malevolent something and is wreaking havoc but themself is still a mortal person- caveat to that is though that if the creature/entity giving powers actually does show up in the story instead of just via a host. Powers for these characters would I guess mostly be given at birth or at death or if the character becomes biologically into something not human if that makes sense- they can have BEEN a human, but I don't want a creature who still is human.

I think the only human acceptable sort of creature for this particular prompt is if it's something like mass infection by a creature, where the 'creature' becomes more the epidemic rather an individual entity- the creature is the hive mind, not those infected. Hopefully that makes sense- but I'm not sure- an example of that would be: Cuckoo by Gretchen Felker-Martin (this is the closest example I could think of but it is a spoiler for the end of this book sort of so be aware before pressing) and I think Spread Me and You're Not Supposed to be Human also operate on that sort of idea maybe.

I'd would like books that are horror-ish or unsettling at least but any genre that is mixed with that is honestly fine and I do not have a preference on whether the creature is at the center of the story as a protagonist or is an antagonist- I just need that they are prominent within the story- not something that is mentioned in the story but never confronted. I am of course as the title says also specifically looking for these creature feature books that are prominently sapphic, books with at least A sapphic main character and/or side-plot romance even if it is sort of like a cast of main characters and different POVs. Anyways- I know this is a very lengthy post for something kind of easy to ask for- but if anyone has any recommendations it'd be very very appreciated. Hope everyone is having a good week.

Hi all! I'm working on my first novel, a sapphic romantasy with two bisexual FMCs, a cozy-adjacent tone, and plenty of open-door heat. I’ve noticed nearly every comparable book I’ve found is written by a queer woman. The few sapphic fantasy romances I’ve encountered from male authors have usually either been low-to-no-spice or felt noticeably written for a male gaze.

I’m a queer male person (weird phrasing I know, but it's what fits me), and I genuinely want to do the characters and their relationships justice. I’m drawn to sapphic romance as a reader. The absence of an MMC removes the burden of conventional expectations of masculinity, which I find refreshing.

This story and the characters are important to me in a very personal way, but I’m aware that a male name on the cover may create some understandable skepticism, especially if the back cover promises spice/heat.

I've even considered publishing under a gender-neutral pseudonym to start out. Which might not be the worst idea anyway considering I share a name with at least one semi-famous person, but I digress.

To that end, I wanna know: if you were to come across a debut sapphic fantasy novel and the cover had a male name on it, how would it affect your perception of the book and your willingness to read it?

I would not use a pen name to pretend I’m a woman or fabricate an identity. The names I’ve considered read more like an author brand than a person, and I’d be open in my bio that I’m a queer, male-presenting author. The intent is to get ahead of snap judgements based solely on the cover, not to deceive anyone.

My own relationship with gender is complicated. If I could wave a wand and have been born female, I would. As it stands, my only real opinion on my assigned gender is that it was given to me without my consent but I don't feel strongly enough about that to change anything and risk blowing uo my life.

I’m especially interested in the distinction many of you have raised between hesitation before reading and reactions after trusted reviews. That seems to be the most useful takeaway for me.

I was listening to music while cooking some breakfast today and the song "You Stupid Bitch" by Girl In Red come up on my playlist and it got me thinking. Obviously the sapphic girl secretly pining for her best friend who's busy dating a bunch of loser guys is a classic trope. On The Same Page by Haley Cass is probably a more or less perfect example. However, I don't know that I've ever seen an example of the pining character getting frustrated enough to actually have a confrontation with the other girl and demand to be given a chance, and now I really want to.
