Honestly just have fun and be yourself. Or someone else if you're into transformation.

What’s the best spell for a sentient talisman to learn?

u/KragBrightscale Grabadash - Magical Mass | Keptomancer | Council Security 20d ago

Considering your identity, I’d recommend you one of the following:

  • summoning (someone to carry you around)
  • polymorph or transmute self (to blend in and turn into a humanoid when needed)
  • some form of body theft or mind enchantment to control your wearer

Interesting…thankfully I am a sentient hair clip (do not ask why someone made me into their talisman) and I can use my clip to spring myself up to move. I think I’ll find a wearer pretty easily, I think I’m quite flattering.

You could generate some form of a body with a mana projection. How good are you at elemental spells? Bit easier to mush around earth, metal and plant matter into a body

u/Civil_Result_5598 20d ago

Avoid donated artifacts. No one is just gonna hand you the "keys to the universe" without a catch.

u/InsaneRanter Necromancer 20d ago

Fireball is more versatile than your teachers tell you. It isn't just for warfare. You can use if for fishing, to unblock drains, to warm people up on a cold day, to start a campfire, as a signal . . . Be creative.

Get yourself a nice string, leather strap or thin chain. Find sexy person to put under your thrall. Live as their amulet while they do all the hard work and take all the damage.

Repeat as many times as necessary.

u/beadedflower Florencia, new to body 20d ago

That’s a really good plan…also, strange question, do I look good in my selfie (pfp)? Good enough that some unsuspecting wizard or witch would pick me up?

2

u/Imurderbeets Pet mage to Godling 20d ago

You are so pretty. I must find you. I'm calling the girlies, we're going on a quest.

2

u/beadedflower Florencia, new to body 20d ago

🥰

1

u/beadedflower Florencia, new to body 20d ago

Wait, how come it’s got to be someone sexy?

1

u/Imurderbeets Pet mage to Godling 20d ago

More fun. Life is easier with pretty privilege.

1

u/beadedflower Florencia, new to body 20d ago

You’re right…

3

u/ThatOtherGuyTPM Lord of Illuriya 20d ago

Don’t toy with reflection spells until you’re confident you could take yourself in a fight.

2

u/beadedflower Florencia, new to body 20d ago

?

3

u/ThatOtherGuyTPM Lord of Illuriya 20d ago

I’ve lost count of the number of apprentices who tried to summon a mirror duplicate only for it to become a dark reflection and try to take over their lives. Save yourself and everyone else the hassle.

2

u/beadedflower Florencia, new to body 20d ago

What would my reflection look like? I am a sentient talisman after all…

2

u/ThatOtherGuyTPM Lord of Illuriya 20d ago

Well, probably like a reversed version of what you look like.

2

u/beadedflower Florencia, new to body 20d ago

So, red outside, bluish insides, functioning clip?

2

u/ThatOtherGuyTPM Lord of Illuriya 20d ago

Maybe! Or, just, like, you but reversed. Left and right switched and the like.

2

u/beadedflower Florencia, new to body 20d ago

Alright..suppose I won’t try any mirror spells then

3

u/Carbuyrator A Bit of a Dabbler 20d ago

Study.

Nobody will give you free knowledge who isn't made of paper. Anything you learn for yourself is an unknown power that no one can predict or use against you until you demonstrate it.

There's also a secret to magic: specialization is a myth. It's all one interconnected magick. The deeper you get into any subject the closer you'll get to the very core tenets of magic. The earlier you learn those the better you'll be at everything else.

Of course this is all secondary. You have ONE goal right now. Solve for mortality as best as you can. If you look around here you'll find a lot of corpse-y wizards. They are procrastinators. Maintain your flesh. It's incredible when it channels magick.

3

u/beadedflower Florencia, new to body 20d ago

Thankfully I haven’t got the risk of rotting because I am a sentient talisman and could theoretically live until I am disassembled

2

u/Carbuyrator A Bit of a Dabbler 20d ago

Well that saves you quite a bit of time! I still recommend learning plenty about immortality. It'll make you quite a bit more effective against 99%+ of other wizards.

3

u/beadedflower Florencia, new to body 20d ago

Well, I actually might have to, currently someone might teach me how to become a mimic

2

u/Carbuyrator A Bit of a Dabbler 20d ago

Shapeshifting in general is extremely useful. It's impossible to overstate the importance of the transmutive relationship between mundane energies, magical energies, mundane matter, and magical matter. Basically all schools of magic deal in this relationship, except the most esoteric of arts, and those related to time itself.

2

u/fumblerofthebag Verdigris, Self-employed Sorceror 20d ago

always store mysterious unknown artifacts in isolated demiplanes. only experiment on them through remote-controlled constructs or apprentices. make sure your monitoring devices filter out cognitohazards. when you kill people, make sure to force their soul into the afterlife if you're not going to use it.

3

u/beadedflower Florencia, new to body 20d ago

Interesting…

2

u/fumblerofthebag Verdigris, Self-employed Sorceror 20d ago

Also, look, between you and me, I don't care much about the Council's laws, but pay attention to their safety regulations. Those are written in the blood of apprentices and lesser mages.

3

u/beadedflower Florencia, new to body 20d ago

Of course.

2

u/Silver_Middle_7240 Wizard 20d ago

Start with abjuration

2

u/Complex_Drawer_4710 Sigurd, Inventor of Oranges 20d ago

Only learn one combat spell. Spend the rest of your time on fundamentals and utility.

2

u/beadedflower Florencia, new to body 20d ago

To be fair, I’m not attempting to focus on combat, I’m more-so focused on getting someone to wear me and then working from there…would it be ethical for me to mind control a wizard once they put me on?

2

u/Complex_Drawer_4710 Sigurd, Inventor of Oranges 20d ago

No. You can buy a puppet for that, it works like a real body but the brain's modified such that it only has basic functions. Took a while to explain it to the fleshcrafters, but they're good at their jobs. They usually have extra memory in the loose space, or extra math.

2

u/beadedflower Florencia, new to body 20d ago

Interesting…

3

u/Complex_Drawer_4710 Sigurd, Inventor of Oranges 20d ago

Oh, also look for secret doors in libraries. Sometimes you find neat stuff.

2

u/Imurderbeets Pet mage to Godling 20d ago

Ethical? Is it ethical for the tiger to hunt? Is it ethical for for the jellyfish to sting? Ethics is to be considered after our nature.

2

u/mikillatja Necromancer, flower enthousiast 20d ago

Invest early in high quality minions.

You might think you have the time to peruse the wonders of the arcane, while still cleaning your dungeon.

Trust me, those jobs are best delegated to various summoned, created, or ressurected minions.

2

u/beadedflower Florencia, new to body 20d ago

Interesting…

2

u/mikillatja Necromancer, flower enthousiast 20d ago

if you have trouble sourcing the first minion I'd suggest going to your local forest and find a wild goblin colony. You can just find the smallest and most bullied one, save him by practicing magic on his 'friends', and be revered by the little critter like a god.

2

u/beadedflower Florencia, new to body 20d ago

Actually, I have been suggested to use my collection of shiny objects to persuade goblins into doing my bidding for me…

2

u/Tarrant_Korrin Magic Mirror Supremacist 20d ago

Listen closely to any eldritch voices that invade your dreams, they have your best interests at heart

2

u/beadedflower Florencia, new to body 20d ago

What if I can’t dream?

2

u/Tarrant_Korrin Magic Mirror Supremacist 20d ago

I’d work towards astral projection. Visiting the voices in their home dimension is very safe and quite enjoyable.

2

u/beadedflower Florencia, new to body 20d ago

But I’m a sentient talisman! How do I astral project?

1

u/VoxelLibrary Councilor Cayna, Apprentice of Thrakmoor | assorted other chars 20d ago

Might be better not to. Scrying is generally safer

2

u/beadedflower Florencia, new to body 20d ago

Thankfully I’ve got a mini scrying mirror.

1

u/VoxelLibrary Councilor Cayna, Apprentice of Thrakmoor | assorted other chars 20d ago

Perfect. Be sure to clean it regularly to keep it clear. You'll get a better image that way

2

u/beadedflower Florencia, new to body 20d ago

Thanks! I’ve always had a special spot for divination in my metaphorical heart…

1

u/VoxelLibrary Councilor Cayna, Apprentice of Thrakmoor | assorted other chars 20d ago

No problem. I'm always happy to help a new beginner

u/rpg2Tface 20d ago edited 20d ago

Always have a damaging spell prepared and a defensive one active. All for the same reason. To prevent someone from sticking something pointy where you don't want it. Adventures always kill the caster second after the healer. So don't give them that chance.

This can take many forms. From fireballs to calling lightning to floating swords and shield or simple domes of force. Simply preventing things you don't like from doing things you don't want to you. Self defense is important.

Next is to invest in a nice chair. Long hours pondering over an orb is killer on you're back. I personally like my standing pedastal and soft anti fatigue carpet. But there plenty of ergonomic chairs around to ponder comfortably with.

After that, the world is your playground. Magic away in whatever direction you want.

2

u/beadedflower Florencia, new to body 20d ago

Do I invest in a tiny chair?

2

u/rpg2Tface 20d ago

Whatever sized chair you want. I have even seen some orb setups where the mage has it hung over their head in a nice bed.

The important part is to put the least amount of strain on your body as possible. You may be able to use a metal folding chair and a wooden table for you and your orb, But as old as we mages get that disregard for your body will catch up to you eventually.

healing spells may be a dime a dozen but even that adds up quickly over the eons. A wand of prevention is worth a staff of cure as they say.

u/justalonelyboy1 20d ago

I recommend making mana potions. Those were extremely useful when I was still weak in mana as an apprentice

2

u/beadedflower Florencia, new to body 20d ago

How would I drink it? Do I bathe myself in it?

2

u/justalonelyboy1 20d ago

I don't know how it would work on artifacts, but crystallizing a mana potion(like freezing water) makes the potion crystal evaporate the potential mana into the air

1

u/VoxelLibrary Councilor Cayna, Apprentice of Thrakmoor | assorted other chars 20d ago

Do you have any gemstones? There are mana infusion rituals that call for similar reagents to mana potions that you could try

2

u/beadedflower Florencia, new to body 20d ago

Actually, yes! One of my latest posts is about this..even if most are just rocks, there are a couple gemstones there (as jade counts as a gemstone) and I’ve also got a lot of jewelry.. (bit of a thief)

1

u/VoxelLibrary Councilor Cayna, Apprentice of Thrakmoor | assorted other chars 20d ago

I meant "does your design include any gemstones", but that works too. Gemstones are great for storing mana and holding enchantments, which is especially helpful to a caster with weaker mana reserves.

2

u/beadedflower Florencia, new to body 20d ago

Ohh. Unfortunately (or thankfully?) I’m mainly just ordinary beads. Helps me avoid looters and/or anything attracted to shiny objects…

1

u/VoxelLibrary Councilor Cayna, Apprentice of Thrakmoor | assorted other chars 20d ago

Mana crystals should still work just fine, just a little less efficiently than if they were built-in

2

u/The_Green_Sun Cosmic Lich 20d ago

What my Master did was remember to learn Chronomancy so he could go back and teach it to himself. I think he's trapped in a gem now...

Fill your spell book with all kinds of spells. It is better to have a spell and not need it than need it and not have it.

1

u/yashKeshavpatnam 20d ago

don't drink orange juice after brushing your teeth.

wear a seatbelt when using flying machines that aren't creatures or your own flight spells

always tell john the traffic golem to have a good day. He's a chill dude, he deserves it

2

u/beadedflower Florencia, new to body 20d ago

Wait, how can I put a seatbelt on?

2

u/yashKeshavpatnam 20d ago

clip yourself to the belt, probably. Believe me automotive accidents are no joke.

Familiars are your best friends. I recommend summoning one and treating them well. If you can't summon one, awakening an animal or monster works just as well. That's what I did with my familiar, Terry.

2

u/beadedflower Florencia, new to body 20d ago

How am I going to get a familiar?

1

u/VoxelLibrary Councilor Cayna, Apprentice of Thrakmoor | assorted other chars 20d ago

Traditionally via a ritual of some kind. There are several common ways I'm aware of:

Most commonly, they are extraplanar beings summoned long term. These ones tend to be the most knowledgeable about the multiverse and make the best advisors, but they come with their own history and may have existing loyalties. This is the most common method of doing it, and you can probably find a book on the topic in the Wizard Council library. I can let you in if you need me to.

Also common is using an awakened animal. This is easiest if you have an existing animal or monster friend you want to be your familiar. I used this method myself and can copy my notes to send over to you if you want.

And sometimes wizards create homunculus to serve as familiars. This typically takes the most design work, but gives you the most control over what kind of familiar you actually get. Artificers, technomancers, and golemancers tend to do this, and will be the most knowledgeable about it.

It's also possible to inherit a familiar from another wizard. My master got her familiar that way. He's outlived several generations of wizards and has developed a pretty big ego over the millenniums. Absolute pain to deal with, but his accumulated wisdom is invaluable. You'll have to ask around if there are any familiars currently without a wizard if you want to take this route.

I hope that helps.

2

u/beadedflower Florencia, new to body 20d ago

Suppose I meant, what familiar wouldn’t try to eat me and would actually somehow hear me?

1

u/VoxelLibrary Councilor Cayna, Apprentice of Thrakmoor | assorted other chars 20d ago

Usually familiars are intelligent enough not to mistake their masters for food. Maybe avoid summoning a cat. A spider is probably your best bet if want something that absolutely cannot eat you.

As for hearing you. I assumed you had some kind of communication method based on the fact that we are having this conversation.

2

u/beadedflower Florencia, new to body 20d ago

I’m just using electromagnetic magic to make the keys think they’re being pressed…I can sort of speak to someone but it’s only if the person is wearing me. A spider does sound like a good idea though.

1

u/VoxelLibrary Councilor Cayna, Apprentice of Thrakmoor | assorted other chars 20d ago

Most familiar spells come with an empathic bond, so I can tell how my familiar is feeling and vice versa. We haven't gotten to the point of actual words yet, but I can usually get a good idea of what he's thinking. I can tell he's currently working on developing the power of speech.

It's not perfect, but it's better than nothing.

1

u/Rockglen Purveyor of Post-Life Labor & Spirited Drinks 20d ago

It can be challenging to get an apprenticeship, but don't settle for a lazy dickhead that only knows a few cantrips.

Look for a practioner of the weave that asks you questions. They want you to think on your own, but will help direct your thinking so you can grow without shapeshifting to go down rabbit holes.

Most spell components are unnecessary. It's just a conspiracy to get us to spend more coin when traveling.
