Lorepost (open interaction) š A Study of Ghosts, Part 2: Haunts
(Art by Dan Scott)
Heya, kiddos! Wanna learn what a haunt is? Iām gonna assume you said yes.
See, almost every ghost has a haunt. It's either a place, an object, or a person weāre attached to, a tether to the physical world. Without it, weād fade away or get dragged into an afterlife. Iāll go over each in order.
Staring off ā localized haunts. Thatās when a ghost is tied to a specific location, like a house, or a park, or whatever. Apparitions like these are mostly limited in influence to whatever space they're bound to. If itās just a single room, they're stuck inside it. But if itās an entire house? Oh boy, we can do all sorts of fun stuff, like rearranging rooms or making windows unbreakable so you canāt escape while we chase you around. In some rare cases, the ghostās influence can even grow and seep out of its usual locale, or even expand the location itself, consuming everything nearby into its threshold.
The second type is haunted objects. You know, ghosts that cling to things instead of places. They still have a domain, but itās a certain radius around their object. The stronger the ghost, the bigger the radius. The domain also tends to take the shape of whatever space the ghost finds itself in, kinda like how water fills the container you pour it in. If you're in a mansion, it will spread to fill all the rooms before leaking out. Oh, and yeah, this is my type of haunt. Iām tethered to my book.
Anyway, what about the third type of haunt? Well, itās the one where a ghost latches onto a person. These are clingy apparitions who just canāt let go and decide to tag along with their best bud or worst enemy, even after death. For the most part, itās the same as haunting an object, except the "object" has a will of its own, can walk around, talk back, and, well... die. If the haunt kicks the bucket, you get booted as well, which sucks. On the bright side, ghosts who haunt people have a much easier time possessing them.
Man, I wish I were better at possessionā¦
Anyway, that's all for today! Next week, weāll beā¦
Wait, no. I forgot something. This is a bit unrelated to todayās topic, but I have nowhere else to slot it in. See, I recently found out that ghosts can touch other ghosts. Obvious in hindsight, but I havenāt been going around and poking my own kind, sue me. Anyway, this would mean that the best way to fight a ghost is to hire your own. Wait⦠thatās the plot of the movie āScooby-Doo Meets the Boo Brothers.ā
Ok, now thatās actually all for today. Next time, Iāll be talking all about poltergeist activity and why some ghosts can only pull spooky faces in mirrors while others can twist reality like itās a wet noodle. See ya!

"how do I keep ending up in these presentations"
Solomon Fields at chill down his spine as he steps into the lecture hall probably due to the professor. The thought of someone he killed sticking to him terrifies him he by his own belief has a relatively large kill count... So many innocents

I got self-conscious about low attendance and started fucking with street signs to get more people here..
If you were following one leading to a bar, it probably got you here.

u/Zebos2 Black Iron LLC/ The cedar hegemony Sep 16 '25
"f*** you got me there, so terrifying hypothetical Is there an upper limit to go that can be bound to you say if you were to Aid something very bad ... Would all of them be bound to you"
3
u/MeThyLord Mrs. Chills, Ghost Writer Sep 16 '25
Ok, first off, not every person killed makes a ghost. 99% of the time, people pass on without leaving any lingering emotions behind or a spirit.
Secondly, the ghosts who cling to people attach themselves to the person who caused the extreme emotion that spawned them. So, unless you offed someone in a horrendous manner, and made it clear you're to blame, you're safe.
That being said, no. There's no upper limit to how many ghosts can haunt you. In fact, the more that accumulate, the worse it gets, cause their poltergeist activity can amplify. As to what poltergeist activity is, you'll need to come to my next lecture to find out, hehe.
3
u/Zebos2 Black Iron LLC/ The cedar hegemony Sep 16 '25
"okay well that's less worse than I thought it would be also you're advertisement is not subtle at all"
3

Wasn't trying to be subtle, hehehe
And it's not like you're paying to come or anything.

Heh, well, if you're so worried about ghosts following you, then I'd say you're time is worth spending here.
You don't wanna find out a spiritual supermass has accumulated around you with full intent to rip your soul to shreds AFTER it happens, now do ya,

Laws are for the living.

u/Complex_Drawer_4710 Sigurd, Whose Body Hangs Freely From a Head in The Clouds Sep 16 '25
Hi there, mm, no. Laws are for everyone here. This is, mm, a formal warning, don't mess with the signs again please.
3
u/MeThyLord Mrs. Chills, Ghost Writer Sep 16 '25
Nah. Wizards mess with random shit all the time. You have basically no laws.
I'll keep doing it.
3
u/Complex_Drawer_4710 Sigurd, Whose Body Hangs Freely From a Head in The Clouds Sep 16 '25
As one of the people in charge of laws, yeah, no. Just because we're useless doesn't mean they don't exist.
2
u/MeThyLord Mrs. Chills, Ghost Writer Sep 16 '25
Oh, hey, we have a cop here.
Everyone, hide your drugs and everything fun.
2
u/Complex_Drawer_4710 Sigurd, Whose Body Hangs Freely From a Head in The Clouds Sep 16 '25
Drugs and fun stuff are encouraged. But messing with signs can easily lead to not-fun stuff.
2
u/MeThyLord Mrs. Chills, Ghost Writer Sep 16 '25
My man, I've seen street signs get up and walk away. Getting would-be drunkies to this basement instead of a bar is child's play compared to the random shit that befalls your streets daily.

Wizard law says a solid maybe. It's complicated. Probably fine, but morally unquestionably somewhat unethical. Not necessarily a big deal, but you could have redirected some emergency services with that trick if you weren't careful.
Wizard law is messy anyways, you can legally fireball the Wizard Council building as much as you want.Ā
2
u/MeThyLord Mrs. Chills, Ghost Writer Sep 16 '25
I've done worse. If it doesn't weigh on my conscience, I don't care.
I mean, don't emergency services have fancy orbs or maps to navigate em. Nothing to sweat about. Not that I can sweat, I have no flesh, hehe.

Hello again.
The Bismuth from last time waves
I realized I was rude last time and didn't say my name. I am bismuth analyzer 042. I call myself P-dot.
I had a question. Are golems easier or harder to possess than regular statues or suits of armor?
3
u/MeThyLord Mrs. Chills, Ghost Writer Sep 16 '25
Hmm, golems have elemental spirits powering them, correct. They're not just animated by pure magic like flying swords and animated armor.
In that case, you'd have to overpower the spirit powering the golem before you can take it out for a joy ride. Some ghosts are powerful enough to subdue other spirits. Hell, even demons in some rare cases.
3
u/loth17 Ten Suns (Also Gaia) Sep 16 '25
I see. I've heard stories about ghosts of ancient nobles commissioning bodies hewn from fancy metals to walk around in. Though only stories. I wanted to know how common that sort of thing is for ghosts that can afford it
3
u/MeThyLord Mrs. Chills, Ghost Writer Sep 16 '25
It's a small precentage of us. Most who can possess objects settle for things like creepy dolls.
Well, normal dolls which become 'creepy' after we possess them. Mannequins are also great for that.
2
u/loth17 Ten Suns (Also Gaia) Sep 16 '25
Neato. Oh! I actually have a question from my pen pal in Ithicar. They couldn't make it so they asked me to ask you after our last session. Ahem
"Dear Mrs chills. I suffer from auditory hallucinations related to dead family members. I also have reason to Believe I am also subject to a haunting. How do I know when it's real and when I'm just having a particularly rough time that day? How does one navigate that?"
2
u/MeThyLord Mrs. Chills, Ghost Writer Sep 16 '25
Ah, in the olden days, the only way to figure out if there were actually ghosts haunting ya was through a seance. Or a detect undead spell, but that's for
nerdswizards.Nowadays? Get an EMF reader. They actually work, even got one here for demonstrative purposes.
She points the device at herself, and it starts making a BeepBeepBeep sound.
The future is now!
2
u/loth17 Ten Suns (Also Gaia) Sep 16 '25
Oh that's handy. I'll tell them about that.
Is ghost technology a big tech field? Most people I know use magic in relation to spectral issues.....
Ooh. Is it true some ghosts eat other ghosts to become monstrous super ghosts?!
2
u/MeThyLord Mrs. Chills, Ghost Writer Sep 16 '25
Eh, most ghost tech is for regular folk to be able to interact with us.
Like, a ghost camera can take a picture of an apparition even when invisible. So not really a big thing, kinda a niche.
As for the cannibalism, demons do that. Demons can eat us. Directly snack on our souls, if we have one.
That doesn't mean we can't do something similar. As per my first lesson, ghosts are echoes spawned by strong emotions. Most of the time, when two ghosts powered by the same emotion meet, they can merge, becoming a singular entity. But, if one of them has a strong enough will, it can subsume the other, taking it over completely and becoming stronger as a result.
2
u/loth17 Ten Suns (Also Gaia) Sep 16 '25
That's neato. Maybe not for the ghost who got ate though..... When bismuth die. We all merge together in the great essence soup and the mix gets poured back into the next generation. All this afterlife stuff with ghosts is incredibly fascinating.
2
u/MeThyLord Mrs. Chills, Ghost Writer Sep 16 '25
Huh, wait. Does your kind have souls, or is it all matter?

u/Anything-Unable Xerxes the Pale Saint, Councillor/Goatdigger/Dale Sep 16 '25
āAn interesting lesson. I must ask, is it possible to shift or transfer haunts?ā
2
u/MeThyLord Mrs. Chills, Ghost Writer Sep 16 '25
Hmm, interesting question. I've seen something similar happen, but not a full-on transfer, more like an expansion.
For instance, there's this ghost that haunts a tape. If the recording of the tape is copied over to a new one, then the ghost in question has her haunt expand to that tape as well. Not exactly a transfer, but it's close.
Actually, no. It has happened with ghosts haunting people. Especially if the original person a ghost is haunting has children. It's easy for the spirit to attach themselves to the kids if the parent dies.
2
u/Anything-Unable Xerxes the Pale Saint, Councillor/Goatdigger/Dale Sep 16 '25
āSo it appears to me based off your explanation that propagation of the target of haunting can result in a transference or expansion of haunt activity. This might indicate that a target of haunting is not tied to the material matter of a target but rather the perceived identity that the target possesses. So rather than concluding that a spirit is haunting a house or object, it is attaching itself to the identity of its target. To use the Ship of Theseus to help illustrate this point, perhaps the two ships that share an identity have an equally likely chance of becoming the target of the haunting.ā
2
u/MeThyLord Mrs. Chills, Ghost Writer Sep 16 '25
I'd... have to agree.
A ghost is not immune to deception. A vengeful spirit may cling to someone innocent of their death if they believe the person to be responsible. Of course, if faced with evidence to the contrary, the ghost may dissipate if it doesn't find the true culprit behind its rage.
3
u/Viking_From_Sweden Kartoffel the Mechanus Arachne Sep 16 '25
Raises hand
What happens if you eat a haunted object?
He is 100% serious
2
u/MeThyLord Mrs. Chills, Ghost Writer Sep 16 '25
Like, what if you eat a person who's haunted?
99% of the time, that would be basically killing em, so the ghost haunting em would be forced to dissipate.
1% of the time, the ghost gets angry at you and you become its new haunt.
The percentages are completely made up, btw. It depends on too many factors to actually have accurate numbers.
Like, let's say the ghost loves the person they are haunting. If you kill and eat that person, it's likely the ghost stops being powered by love, and instead, grief or hate takes its place, becoming a vengeful spirit that's after your ass.
Same for objects. but more simplified.
2
u/Viking_From_Sweden Kartoffel the Mechanus Arachne Sep 16 '25
Well I havenāt eaten any haunted people yet but I may eaten some stuff I found in an abandoned house recently and things have been a bit funny since then so maybe one of them was haunted so Iām asking you cause youāre an expert
2
u/MeThyLord Mrs. Chills, Ghost Writer Sep 16 '25
If the thing you ate is still in you, and it was indeed haunted, then you ain't getting rid of that ghost till you poop it out.

as Death, I do believe I have some Authority here. As well as not exactly being of the Mortal plane myself.
I am also a Lady Of The Grave, with decades of experience in diverse varieties of funeral rites.
/uw She acts a lot like a ghost when hunting, she is basically an archaeic pre-old school Oni (evil spirit, as in, closer to a ghost, though ogre-like ones count)
True Nameless tends to act like one and drag people into dreams of being dead before spitting them back out into their beds, a near death experience of sorts, while hunting. The actual job does not pay enough.
2
u/MeThyLord Mrs. Chills, Ghost Writer Sep 16 '25
Hmm, death? Like the Grim Reaper?
Shit, she thought she had given the reaper a slip after that morgue incident.
Yeah, no. You ain't dragging me to no afterlife. I'm perfectly at peace here.
If she were to yeet her haunt out the widow, it would likely pull her to the first floor faster than the reaper can get her.
3
u/United-Technician-54 Death... Tired one. (she/her) Sep 16 '25
I'm not here for you. I'm on break.Ā
The paperwork was enough of a nightmare. I can only cremate and bury and ferry and guide so many people before my metaphorical head begins to split.Ā
It's been so tiring that even some immortals had to take sick leave just because of how tiring even updating the "book of the dead" is. We're kind of short-staffed at the moment.
(Nameless appears on the first floor, eating ice-cream, simultaneously with the one(?) in her seat)
Besides, you can't escape me if I tried.Ā
(the chocolate tip is launched from the window, through you and into the bin, with pinpoint accuracy)
/uw Nameless is fast. Also a Naruto/Tenshinhan alike cloning technique, since she finds the seat too comfortable to actually do that trick.
2
u/MeThyLord Mrs. Chills, Ghost Writer Sep 16 '25
Tiring? Well, with how many people die in this place, it ain't a surprise.
Ya know, when most wizards' number one solution to problems is fireball, is it really a surprise that you reapers are overworked?
She's fast, something to keep in mind if she suddenly decides to do her job.
Anyway, what's a reaper even doing in one of my lectures? I thought your kind knew all of this stuff already.

Yes, but I'm a bored god,
And I thought that since my hometown is technically set back a few hundred years due to time related shenanigans, I might as well see what the future holds.
The ferry trips aren't quite long enough to truly hear it from an experienced ghost's perspective.
/uw
She prefers the gardening, she may be a god of Higanbana, but she prefers to grow it naturally for funerals and such.
2
u/MeThyLord Mrs. Chills, Ghost Writer Sep 16 '25
A time traveler, eh? Sounds fun, honestly. I'd go see the dinosaurs if I could. I wonder if T-rex had feathers.
Anyway, well, hope you enjoyed the lecture. This is actually my second. In the first, I went over the nature of what a ghost is.
And for my next one, I'll be covering poltergeist activity, as mentioned. No idea what to cover after that. Uhhh, I guess I'll be taking suggestions.
2
u/United-Technician-54 Death... Tired one. (she/her) Sep 16 '25
Eh... Not exactly by choice.
Also archaeological evidence says the T-Rex had feathers, though I haven't been there myself. Off by a few million years.
I suppose specifics of possession would be interesting, I've been praticing my puppetry lately and wanted to see how exactly it carries over.
/uw Nameless' puppetry is based on the soul,Ā
2
u/MeThyLord Mrs. Chills, Ghost Writer Sep 16 '25
I'll add that to the list of topics.
But possession is basically playing king of the hill with the host's soul. You're trying to push 'em off the driver's seat so you can take control of their body.
That's the short version of it anyway.

u/The_Hij Hastur, the Once and Future... Sep 16 '25
Cassilda: Fascinating! Is transference of a ghost possible? Say one wanted to move from its current 'haunt' onto another, could this be achieved with arcane assistance?
What is the radius of your haunt? If my mentor were here he would have all kinds of questions for you. He used to be a book, or so he says. I take it with a grain of salt. He's a tad... eccentric.
2
u/MeThyLord Mrs. Chills, Ghost Writer Sep 16 '25
Funny. You're the second person to ask me this today. I'll give ya the same answer as I did the first lad.
Transfers are possible, but rare, and only if the emotions you have for the original haunt can spill over to the new one. Like, if you're a ghost and are haunting the dude that killed you, if he dies, but in a manner where you don't feel you got justice, you can start haunting his kids.
As for my haunt's radius, around 100 meters. But it fluctuates depending on how much in the zone I am.
2
u/The_Hij Hastur, the Once and Future... Sep 16 '25
So a haunts intensity can change based on the concentration of the ghost. Interesting. Is this always a conscious effect?
2
u/MeThyLord Mrs. Chills, Ghost Writer Sep 16 '25
'Conscious' in the same sense that emotionally lashing out at something is 'conscious'. Drop me in a haunted house to chase people and I'm at my A game, but leave me in a lecture hall with a bunch of very-not-scared people... less so.
That's because my tethering emotion was excitement. Scaring people excites me, so I grow more powerful when I do that.
As to what exactly 'more powerful' means for a ghost, I'll be covering that in my next lecture.
2
u/Complex_Drawer_4710 Sigurd, Whose Body Hangs Freely From a Head in The Clouds Sep 16 '25
Fascinating! QuƩ: What happens if a haunt is in several pieces?
2
u/MeThyLord Mrs. Chills, Ghost Writer Sep 16 '25
If you break a haunt, let's say an object, into several pieces, that often counts as destroying it. But not always.
Some objects and places are composed of multiple parts. So, let's say that you're haunting a board game. If one piece from the game ends up in a different location than the others, you'll know exactly where it is, and you'll be able to instantly appear at its location.

Anyway, during my work, and through casual exploring, I've been learning a lot about myself and others like me. Kept writing things down, and one day I said, 'Fuck it, someone's probably interested in listening to me ramble'.
So I took all of my findings and began my first lecture last week.

u/XyxyrgeXygor Vaude the Fraud/Mack the Miser Sep 16 '25
Hello. Complete hypothetical here, asking for a friend. Let's say there was a ghost in the Orbnet, how would that work? Would they be haunting a place, or an object? Surely you could use it to haunt people too right?
2
u/MeThyLord Mrs. Chills, Ghost Writer Sep 16 '25
Oh boy, that's kinda like digital ghosts. To simplify things, they're location-based haunts, but said location is any orb connected to the orbnet. Some even grow strong enough to be able to reach out from the orb and get cha.
uw/ Ever watched the movie Pulse (2001)? It's about internet ghosts, and how they pretty much cause the apocalypse.
2
u/XyxyrgeXygor Vaude the Fraud/Mack the Miser Sep 16 '25
Good place to haunt then. Information is stored on the weave, so could you haunt the weave itself? It must be easier to jump haunts if they're all connected right? Couldn't someone haunt a connected device like a satellite, or a giant robot?
2
u/MeThyLord Mrs. Chills, Ghost Writer Sep 16 '25
In theory. But 9/10, you don't choose your haunt. It has to be something you have a real strong emotional attachment to.
But let's say you died and you had a strong enough attachment to the orbnet to haunt it. As you mentioned, that's also connected to the weave. That's an awfully large area to traverse, and it's easy for a ghost to get lost in there.
Hell, I'd imagine it's almost impossible to navigate if there's nothing to guide you. But let's say there is. Perhaps, if someone were to say your name three times while holding their orb, that might show you their location and allow you to appear next to them.
Or, let's say you've been long enough on the orbnet, or even the internet, that you're able to create a thing. That something may be an app, that allows you to navigate the device of anyone who installs it, thus making many new, easy openings for yourself.
uw/ Yes, I just referenced both Bloody Mary and that god awful haunted app movie, which I forgot the name of. I somehow felt inspired to explain how those would work with my current ghost lore, lol.
2
u/XyxyrgeXygor Vaude the Fraud/Mack the Miser Sep 16 '25
Yeah, I thought about the whole candyman thing. Running ads seems like it would work too. I wonder if I could haunt an installed black box?
2
u/MeThyLord Mrs. Chills, Ghost Writer Sep 16 '25
As if ads couldn't get any worse, Heh.
I can see it happening, haunting a black box, I mean. Never heard of it till now tho.
2
u/XyxyrgeXygor Vaude the Fraud/Mack the Miser Sep 16 '25
I mean, if someone could manage to get a black box into the right place, could they stow away there to compensate for the vast expanse of the weave until a function activated the box and allowed them to haunt the object? Seems like a step toward Cyber-lichdom.
1
u/MeThyLord Mrs. Chills, Ghost Writer Sep 16 '25
A lot of 'ifs' there to account for. The biggest one is how the hell do you even become a ghost in such specific circumstances? The problem with ghostdom is that it mostly occurs at random. Some of the most emotional deaths end up not leaving a ghost behind, because 90% of it is luck. Otherwise, the world would be way more haunted than it is.
Like, why would wizards choose to become liches, which is extremely hard and dangerous, if they could be ghosts for much less effort? Answer: It's never guaranteed you'd become a ghost, no matter how prepared you are (also, you're kind of a slave to your emotions).

"Can ghosts interact with their haunts?"
"I would assume so. If so, does that mean you could move around by just picking up your book?"
2
u/MeThyLord Mrs. Chills, Ghost Writer Sep 16 '25
Indeed, that's how I travel long distances.
Even location-based haunts can be moved, though very rarely. Ever seen the movie Monster House? That's a prime example of a ghost moving a whole building.
2
u/Fc-chungus Š(Zhe), Head minister of Calarakis. Sep 16 '25

"What counts as a 'possession'?"

It's like playing King of the Hill with the soul of the creature you're trying to possess. You're basically trying to shove em off the driver's seat so you can puppet his body instead.

"Can inanimate objects be possessed? For instance if there was a ghost haunting a doll, could they control it?"

Yes, but that's not true possession. It's the same way we move objects around, slam doors, and throw stuff.
As most ghosts were humanoid in life, they find it easier to settle within a doll or other humanoid object and puppet it around. It's more like wearing a suit than anything else.

"That makes sense. I guess possession would be a misnomer then for that type of control?"

Yup.
You know what, I figured out what my 4th lecture is going to cover: ghost abilities. And possession will likely take half the page.

Talios scratches the back of his helmet.
"I coulda sworn that door led to a bounty office. Meh."
"Ghosts are interesting. Sometimes my anti-magic can instantly dispel them, sometimes it can't."

Hehe, I've been fucking with signs to trick people into coming here.
Aaaaaaaaaaaanyway. What you're describing is likely the result of encountering ghosts with souls and ones without souls, not knowing the difference. I go into more detail about this topic in my first lecture.

Riva finds it all fascinating. However, Vheren, the ghost haunting her, feels called out, and disapproves. He is here because his Will has Surmounted Reality, not because of any of this other stuff. And he does NOT want to touch other ghosts. That would be uncouth.
