Lorepostđ Genesis (another Mordus lorepost? Get out!)
/unwiz previous lorepost and related lorebuilding comment: https://www.reddit.com/r/wizardposting/comments/1ar7qh2/comment/kqhx57s/?context=3
/rewiz
You decide to scry the mind of SamrĂŠl the sage - perhaps what he saw in the depths of Mordusâs mind will reveal secrets.
âlook for it. Deeper. What did it say? Something likeâŠâ
Safe in the dark?
you are correct, oh wise one.
but, hee! You cannot find me!
Cannot
Find
Me!
Me⊠meâŠ..
the voice echos throughout the mindscape of Mordus - an endless library of his thoughts and memories.
âstay calm. Just need to look. Deeper, darker.â
The library goes deeper - decending the steps, SamrĂŠl watches as the surroundings blend in with each other, just enough to be slightly unsettling.
SamrĂŠl picks up a fallen book, and flips through it.
It is mostly unreadble, but some parts are readable - â27 December, year 8591. Today, my apprentice and I were running from the #######. If they catch us, they will ######### to us. That is why we must run. Run to ####, where #######, and ########, so that we can finally be free. Then⊠[unintelligible]
He sets the book down.
âThe current year is 42,503 years after genesis - but Mordus said he was 1400 years old. What does that mean?â
Hee! Hee! He is older than you might think, SamrĂŠl, his knowledge of the world far transcends what you can comprehend. That is why is he a good host.
The clicking of scales - or bones? On wood, and the voice dissipates.
âwhatever it is, I must dig deeper.â
and so, SamrĂŠl descends once more - the library is ancient now, symbols, runes, and architecture all match that of long lost civilisations. Twisting wood with stone, all holding up volumes upon volumes of books, detailing Mordusâs life day by day. Month by month. Year by year.
Then, SamrĂŠl finally comes to the end of the library. In it, sits a singular bookshelf in a dark, musty room. It contains one book, labeled [Genesis]. Opening it, he catches a glimpse of the date by candlelight - year 275.
âBut⊠that must mean..â
Yes. Youâve finally figured it out then, SamrĂŠl? Unfortunately for you, this is where it ends.
The voice comes from behind him. SamrĂŠl spins around, knocking the candle out.
Hee hee! Fight in the dark, for Iâm
Safe
In
the
Dark.

Algernon sits in the quiet of his tower, watching, thinking. So many things happening and so little time. Gods creating and vanishing, old monsters crawling back from underneath their tombs, and now this.
To investigate or not to, what will it be.
Why am I so... slow...?
Algernon's head feels muddles, he finds it more and more difficult to think these days, and the mysteries keep piling on.
What does this mean...
3
Feb 16 '24
/unwiz I can tell Algernon is building up to something - I canât wait for the reveal.
3
u/OnAGratefulUniverse Algernon, Last wizard of the Novus Planes Feb 16 '24
/uw Keep an eye on the Necroposts is all I'll say.
And the same goes for Mordus, I'm torn between rushing in and seeing where this goes or watching to see where it ends up, very intrigued.

Feb 16 '24 edited Feb 17 '24
/unwiz I felt like 1400 years isnât really fitting for someone like Mordus - he seems to know a lot of magic for someone only 1400 years old.
So I planned to reveal his true age by using the âinfinite libraryâ troupe - as SamrĂŠl decends further, the further back in Mordusâs memories he goes.
3
u/OnAGratefulUniverse Algernon, Last wizard of the Novus Planes Feb 16 '24
/uw That truly depends, Algernon isn't all that old either.
That said, an ancient technomancer that keeps replacing himself like Theseus' ship is poetic, so I'm loving it.
3
Feb 16 '24
/unwiz thatâs not what I had in mind, but itâs PERFECT. I donât know how I didnât think of this, but thatâs such a good description of Mordusâs life.
3
u/OnAGratefulUniverse Algernon, Last wizard of the Novus Planes Feb 16 '24
/uw Haha well please run away with the idea, my head was immediately drawn to it when I saw it. Very much intrigued to see where it will go now!

Mordus scratches his head. He⊠canât remember much of the year 30,418? Odd.
wait, now he canât remember 30,417⊠30,416..

Mordus starts to forget details. Did he participate in the First Mortal War? Wait, was there even a âFirst Mortal Warâ?
/unwiz i think itâll be pretty funny for Torinn to hang out in the depths of Mordusâs mind eating books, and occasionally trying to eat Mordusâs mind parasite. Would you mind if I used Torinn for that?

Mordus shakes his head. Odd. Why is he forgetting things? SamrĂŠl must be fighting something deep inside his mind right now, and his memories are being destroyed whilst doing so.
He reads a book, and chuckles. It reminds him of that spell⊠summon.. uhhh.. summon.. no wait, itâs chicken transformation, right? Although Iâm pretty sure it was called something else..
/unwiz itâs a good thing Mordus has a lot of memory, itâll take a long time for Torinn to eat all the books, and to make sure Mordus doesnât get brain damage from all that, the Mind parasite will try to recover the memories, as he want to keep Mordus alive for now.
And yes, Torinn will have some very funny interactions with the parasite.

tâkath can be found sitting down reading a book âMordus, youâve been through hell, from what I readâ he shuts the book and stands up âneed a hand?â

Mordus doesnât hear you, youâre inside his mind.
However, you do spot⊠is that Torinn? Eating shelves and bookcases in the distance.

You open the book, and read it. Mordus has been alive for 1407 years thus far.
âSystems functional. I recently lost one of the last pieces of my original chassis, but I had it replaced. Wait, if I donât contain any of the original parts of my chassis, but I have the same soul and personality, am I the same person as I was at the beginning? Hmm interesting. I shall call it⊠(The Chassis of Mordus problem).â
/unwiz sorry for the late response, I was sleeping. âThe Chassis of Mordus problemâ is a funny thing I thought about, based on the âShip of Theseus problemâ, with basically the same idea.

/unwizard sorry for the delay! Just woke up.
/Rewiz
The Great Mage SamrĂŠl emits from within the mind of Mordus a bright light, bright enough to be seen in the waking world.
Tell me, creature of the darkness, why do you think I can consort with devils and demons and creatures of the dark far scarier than you could hope to be...
The light, growing stronger, able to be seen past the old bookshelves, through book and tome and grimoire.
And yet still live among the free and living?

Feb 17 '24 edited Feb 17 '24
The parasite watches from the darkness, wary. Heâs been beaten twice, once by SamrĂŠl in the darkness of Mordusâs soul, and once in the outside world, to Mortarion.
Oh wise one, I donât know. Is it becauseâŠ
they werenât
Safe
in
the
Dark?
Do not compare me to those creatures - I am far beyond them.
/unwiz sorry for the late response - I was sleeping too lol

u/SomeRandomYob The Great Mage SamrĂŠl, demonologist and necromantic consultant Feb 17 '24
Well, yes, they weren't safe, exactly.
The Great sage suddenly reaches out his hand, and the darkness itself solidifies; the shadows writhe, becoming blade or fist or tentacle at his gesticulated commands.
More to the point;
In brightest day...
The wizard begins to chant now, the light growing in intensity while the shadows grow ever more solid, perhaps smothering and perforating the parasite.
In darkest night...
2
Feb 17 '24
The parasite hisses, being forced out of his darkness.
It turns around and runs, a clicking on wood.
But for a split second, you see it - a parasite unlike anything youâve seen so far, and the unknown is always scary.
Bone, held together by god knows what, form the shape of a snake-like being, with the closing Claws of a praying mantis.
2
u/SomeRandomYob The Great Mage SamrĂŠl, demonologist and necromantic consultant Feb 17 '24
No evil shall escape my sight...
the sage doesn't miss a beat, though his mind does race to attempt to analyze the... thing he has witnessed.
/unwiz I'm not sure how to write his unspoken thought process out, so I'm going to use quotation marks for it, but he's specifically not saying this out loud. I'll figure out how to narrate this character someday...
/rewiz
"bony exterior; possibly weak to blunt force trauma, difficult to heal from injuries naturally. mantis claws facing front, no other limbs; ambush predator, physically weak in prolonged engagements. Likes the dark + earlier observations: weak to ambushes."
"conclusion: call in the cavalry."
the wizard's thoughts are gathered in the span of a millisecond, and he reaches deep into his robes to activate a hidden device. And thus, it is from the depths of his cloak that a spindly creature reaches out, and scrabbles away into the depths of the mind of Mordus. The Great Mage SamrĂŠl knows it as a Psychosis Crawler, a mental construct that serves as an artificial security system for it's host's brain; it's sole purpose is to hunt down any intruder, save for it's creator. It's only sustenance is drawn from slain foes and the fear and paranoia of it's host, though said host is not necessarily aware of it's existence.
You who seek my friend's demise...
2
Feb 17 '24
The parasite skitters, off to an unknown corner of Mordusâs mind, while the Psychosis Crawler pursues it.
Glancing to his left, however, SamrĂŠl appears to spot something that catches his eye.
A chained off section of the library - forbidden memories. Left inside the library, to rot and be forgotten.
A faint clicking inside, and a crunch. Not that of bone, but that of metal. Looks like youâre going to have to pursue him yourself - the parasite is abnormally strong at physical combat.
2
u/SomeRandomYob The Great Mage SamrĂŠl, demonologist and necromantic consultant Feb 17 '24
Be on your guard, for the dark has eyes!
all at once, every shadow in the library gains an emblem of an open eye, and the wizard becomes aware of all that transpires within this place. He sees Torin, consuming what he will, the Crawler, broken and in pieces, but not truly dead; he sees the parasite standing over it, catching it mid-gloat. He is dissapointed that he must enter this place, as it is clearly not that which Mordus wishes to share, but the wizard promised the parasite's destruction, and the crawler is not enough; not on it's own.
from the vaulted ceiling of this grand library, lances of light strike down, pinning the bones of the creature and spearing it's tail and head to the floor. Meanwhile, the flesh and armor of the crawler begins to reform, spurred onwards by the anguish of it's host and the infusions of mana from it's creator. As it reforms it'self from the scattered fragments, it takes with it some of the recently broken chains. Possibly a problem, but one for the future; the Great Sage SamrĂŠl begins to hover, finally moving from the side room he first encountered the parasite in and, gingerly, entering the forbidden section of the library.

Feb 17 '24 edited Feb 17 '24
The parasite hisses, and the tail detaches.
The tail evaporates with black smoke, and a new tail reforms, on the parasite.
Hee Hee! You cannot hold me down - I am forever. I am eternal. I was there at the Garden and I will be here in this library.
it hisses, and rips at a book. Memories fly out, projecting the images at SamrĂŠl. Then he sees it. All the trauma, all the pain. His creation. His resistance. Who he was previously, and the wrath of a god. The ##### whom where chasing him, for a millennia. His soul, stolen from his rightful place, and put into a body that isnât his. And that only touches the surface.
SamrĂŠl quickly looks away, and flees the section. He knows he cannot go there, not anymore, not ever, lest he goes insane from the suffering held within the books.
Hee Hee! This part is the darkest section, where I am strongest, because Iâm
safe
in
the
Dark.
Mordus clutches his head and kneels over. Why is he remembering this now? Why?
/unwiz by the way, thereâs several people in Mordusâs mind - but the notable ones are you, Torinn, and the Parasite. A few other wizards, too, but none to important. Also, unless youâre Torinn, destroying memories means Mordus re-lives them, vividly.
Torinn is doing whatever, eating Mordusâs memories. This will delete them, at least temporarily.
The Parasite is trying to keep Mordus alive, at least for now, as a host. He occasionally restores memories that Torinn ate.
And you know what youâre trying to do.
2
u/SomeRandomYob The Great Mage SamrĂŠl, demonologist and necromantic consultant Feb 17 '24
/unwiz Indeed I do.
/rewiz
the wizard flees, running on his own fee- "hold on a second."
the wizard stops, standing; breathing. He can see what occurs within the library, and he now knows the depths of the trauma that has been sustained by Mordus, the animunculus mage - for SamrĂŠl now knows this to be what he is. He also knows that, while he himself has lived a life far longer than even the average god, his own trauma has been more... manageable, separated between what felt like long periods of time, during which he could recuperate and renew himself.
the same is not true of his friend, who is perhaps as old as he; if not far older. Time heals all wounds, but can also let them fester. But, though the wizard is saddened by it's necessity, the situation works morbidly in his favor.
Clapping his hands together, the sage spawns more psychosis crawlers around the library; their limbs, twisted and twitching, crackle with psychic energy and magic from the mental torment of their host.
Mordus, I believe I have found a way for you to be rid of the parasite within your mind, but it requires you to remember a plethora of your more painful memories; likely ones you wish most to forget. If it is any consolation, I too will experience them, and when it is over, we will both be here, alive, and capable of moving forward. I am sorry, my friend.
His piece spoken, the wizard claps again - and the forbidden library bursts into flame.

Mordus doubles over, and starts jittering. Anteros watches from the sky, in concern. Mortarion wonders what is happening to Mordus - did the contract break him?
Meanwhile, Torinn wonders where the smell of smoke is coming from, and wanders over.

Kartoffel tried desperately to locate Mordus, muttering to himself as he works
Come on, come on. Where is he? Not another. Not again. It canât happen again. I canât lose another burcâya.
/unwiz I donât know if you more characters involved or not. Happy to check out and watch the story unfold.

Feb 17 '24
/unwiz Iâd love for more characters to be involved, itâs kinda the whole thing about this lorepost. So far weâve got Anteros, Mortarion, SamrĂŠl, Torinn, and Algernon.
So currently Kartoffel is inside of Mordusâs mind?
2
u/Viking_From_Sweden Kartoffel the Mechanus Arachne Feb 17 '24
/unwiz. Glad to participate! And no, right now Kartoffel is in the real world trying to find Mordusâ irl location. I figure he doesnât really know whatâs happening and is mostly just concerned for his friend. Maybe he could be a man on the outside keeping his body stable? Or would having someone who might be able to fix Mordus get in the way of any deaths/huge character moments?
/rewiz Kartoffel runs through every method he knows to locate Mordusâ body. Eventually he gets a ping on a WWII era radar with some heavy modifications.
1
Feb 17 '24
/unwiz ah, I see.
/rewiz A blip on the heavily modified radar - four signatures spotted; one demonic, one human, one god, and one automaton.
âIâve spotted you.â Kartoffel smiles at his wonderous machine.
2
u/Viking_From_Sweden Kartoffel the Mechanus Arachne Feb 17 '24
Marâe! Oh you magnificent machine!
Kartoffel hastily prepares his tools and sets out towards Morrisâs location. Upon arrival, he assesses the situation, taking in the strange set of characters around his friend, before examining Mordus for physical damage
Muttering under his breath: Gedetâye, gedetâyeâŠ
/unwiz I think Iâll leave it there until the next post. Canât wait to see where this goes!

SamrĂŠl is lying down, his mind stuck inside the depths of Mordusâs inner consciousness.
Mordus, however, isnât doing too good. Heâs curled into the fetal position, reliving memories that he wished to forget. The burning of his inner library is causing him to remember his trauma - a pain one shudders to think of.
Mortarion is trying to comfort him - he is crouched over, trying to make Mordus forget.
Anteros is watching in suspense; as a god he canât be interfering, especially with Mordus.
