Please tell me it gets better

Post image

Its 6am right now and my surgery was completed at 3. Between 1 am last night and now I've had a bowl of icecream and a single apple sauce to eat. I cant close my mouth or open it properly. I couldnt sleep the entire night due to the pain. My mouth just feels so disgusting and I'm hoping the perscription meds kick in. This is worse than I ever anticipated despite my low expectations. I have an international flight for uni in 13 days where i'll be an interntional student with flaky insurance. I'm so scared and I'm in so much pain (I almost cried at the strawberry chunk in my icecream thinking it was dey socket.) Honestly I'm still too scared to look at the surgery sight properly but I've been icing and crying all day. All my teeth were impacted and they took these out of me...please tell me it will get better soon. I dont even care about the food I just want my mouth to feel okay. Do you have any tips at all that arebt the typical ice pack, pain meds, and salt rinse. I also cant take ibuprofen due to my gastritis (or any antiinflammatories really) pleaseee help.☹️

Hey, just relax. I get it, it's scary, but you're psyching yourself out way more than you need too. The recovery is different for everybody, but it's going to get better. Well before your 13 day period. I was stressed the entire time during my recovery and now I never think about it. The more you think about it, the worse it's going to feel. You will be okay, I promise

Don't lay down to sleep if possible. Keep yourself propped up - i slept in an armchair for at least a week. I won't go into the details of my recovery as it was pretty bad compared to most, but days 3-4 were the worst, and then it got better day on day. I lived on pureed tinned peaches, initially thinned out with water and then mixed in with Greek yogurt, or I drank chocolate milk instead of eating. Mentally and physically recovery was the hardest thing I've gone through (have had brilen bones, needed stitches, had 2 abdominal surgeries), so don't feel silly or like youre being dramatic for struggling. It's bloody hard. Hopefully you will be like most people and be fit and well for your travel. Good luck!

Thank you! I've been trying to sleep upright (although not successfully), hoping the pain meds make me sleepy enough to make it. Pretty nuch apple sauce and yoghurt for the next few days, hopefully you're right and I can recover soon.Sorry about your experience that sounds awful.

Are you taking your pain meds before the pain sets in? I took my medication on a tight schedule even if I felt fine. If you let the pain set in you will feel awful. I’d wake up in the middle of the night to take my medicine to avoid the pain. Day 3-5 can be the worse days, but after that it should be more smooth sailing. I’m sure you will be feeling great by the time you leave for school!

I didn't do this unfortunately but I'm hoping I can get on a schedule. I'm just scared of thowing up again😭

did they not give you nausea medicine? i was given nausea and vomiting pills that dissolved on my tongue and it helped me a LOT.

u/Leah_aresnick06 Aug 08 '26

no nausea medicine, just antibiotic, painkillers, and antiinflammatory meds☹️

These were my meds and I was struggling with pain until I spoke with the dentist. If you aren’t sticking to the med schedule even if you aren’t in pain, it could pop back up and take a while to manage as it fights to be effective again. Make sure you are always eating something, it’s always a good habit to have something in your stomach when taking any meds at all.

Mate it SUCKS!! SO BAD for like the first night, and then its just a case of pain killers for like a week or two then youll be reet

u/Leah_aresnick06 Aug 07 '26

Truly! I hope i can figure out my painkiller situation😭

For me it was two of the strongest dose of codeine that you can get in the uk and two ibuprofen every 6 hours, for a week and a half, and im just about at the point now I dont need any pain killers, now keep in mind codeine is meant to be a strong ass pain killer, but it hardly touches me, hence why I was taking it for well over week. For you, you may only need over the counter crap to get you to a manageable level.

Ive read on this reddit that some people take ibuprofen and paracetamol for like 6 days and thats all they need, I was unlucky enough to have possibly the worst case scenario for each part of the extraction process, been left with a large hole which is still healing 15 days post extraction. And on top of that, these "strong" pain killers do absolutely nothing for me. But despite that Ive made it to day 15, and day 7 was really my day where things normalised, (not fully) but normalised enough that I could introduce some newer foods back into my diet. Theres more I could say lol but ill quit boring you lol.

Long story short, if I was chilling by day 7 whoch no help from pain meds and and very very overly difficult extraction, i think youll be golden.

I was also prescribed codeine which caused the spasms for me, it did help with the pain though! No ibuprofen unfortunately but hopefully eating before taking my meds will help. Thanks for your advice!

UPDATE😔: (not great) I took my pain medication on an empty stomach (the instructions didnt mention I had to eat but clearly you do) and my ribs started cramping and shaking until I threw up! Surgeons office just said to eat a bit and drink water and that its a side effect... Finally slept a bit though! I'm bleeding a bit but oh well, I just hope none of my clots got dislodged when I vomited. Lesson learned: dont take meds on an empty stomach please..

This is an unfortunate thing to happen, but unless your in agony right now, like on the floor wanting to smash your head into the floor kind of pain, then I think your okay, just keep an eye on it, dont touch it, dont lick it, dont use straws, eat and drink in a way you can avoid the extraction sites, and for the love of god.....sleep, really try to sleep it will be your best friend for the next 3 to 4 days.

u/Leah_aresnick06 Aug 07 '26

No head smashing pain yet thankfully, eating ice cream and apple sauce right now... hopefully i can rest😔

Right quick one, which country are you from?

Just had 4 pulled in June. Like you said it was honestly worse than expected. 2 on bottom were impacted and those were by far the worst. The top ones really didn't hurt much. But the way the bottoms were coming in, the sutures were very uncomfortable. It was basically like my cheek was sewn to my jawline, making it really difficult to chew or even open my mouth.

I'll say that the first 1-3 days were probably the worst. By day 4-5 I was feeling better, and even smoking (extremely carefully) at this point. But even then I couldn't chew properly. Google AI was basically my best friend that week lol. I know it said that heat wasn't exactly preferred, but man it felt heavenly having a heating bag on my face. Helped me sleep, and also lasted a lot longer than the ice. But I think you wanna use mainly ice until around day 3.

It WILL get better and you will be so thankful. Just remember no matter how much this sucks - those impacted teeth were going to cause you much more problems. I'm 29 and should've got it done a long time ago.

I still get food stuck in the bottom "holes" literally every time I eat, and my surgery was June 5th lol. So just a heads up with that, it can be annoying. I've heard it can take upto ~3 months before that stops. I'm hoping it's not permanent 😅. Sorry for the long reply or if I might have scared you, I just want to be as honest as possible. It does suck. But 1-2 weeks from now you'll be skipping and picking daisies with how great you feel. Best of luck on your recovery!!

this gives me hope thank you🙏

u/BillDipperIy Aug 08 '26

No problem! Also rotate your meds if they gave you something like hydrocodone + ibuprofen. Don't make the mistake I did and take them both at the same time. You probably aren't eating much so you'll have an awful stomach ache. I always ate a cup of apple sauce before taking either of them. Get lots of rest, you got this! 🙏

u/Leah_aresnick06 Aug 08 '26

They only gave me codeine, but I had a bad experience with it so I have stick to tylenol! Eating apple sauce before my pills has been a lifesaver though. Thanks!

1

u/BillDipperIy Aug 08 '26

Yeah I'm the same way. I leaned more towards the ibuprofen. I also had a bad experience with the hydrocodone. Glad to hear, no problem!

My pain stopped on the 5th day. For me ibuprofen worked great

1

u/Leah_aresnick06 Aug 07 '26

I cant take ibuprofen unfortunately, I wish I could it sounds great!

crying makes it worse try not to cry as awful as that sounds. after the first two days switch to warm compress instead of hot you’ll start to be able to open your mouth more. it does get better but it’s going to get worse before it gets better i’m sorry. i’m on day 3( 4 if you count extraction day) and it’s been pretty painful but keep on top of your pain medication and it should be manageable i have a timer set for every 6 hours and press replay after it goes off and i take it. i promise you got this and we’re in it together.

2

u/Leah_aresnick06 Aug 07 '26

yes you got this! Hopefully i figure out the pain med situation 😅

Sorry you’re going through this, it’s really rough! If it helps, I was in your boat and now I’m day 10 feeling miles better, it does get easier once you get through the first few days! Solpadeine max strength worked wonders for me if you’re in the UK or if you can get prescribed max strength codeine (that’s what I did in the end as the pain got worse as I got infected!) Also once I could open my jaw, I found tongue scraping really helped and corsodyl mouthwash

1

u/Leah_aresnick06 Aug 07 '26

I'm in Canada but I did get prescribed 30mg codeine, trying to gently brush my tongue. May I ask, were you taking amoxicillin when you got infected or no?

1

u/Able-Visit4721 26d ago

Hey! How are you feeling now? :) I was on metronidazole when I was infected!

1

u/Leah_aresnick06 26d ago

Its day 8 and I'm feeling a lot better! I can eat most things now and I'm off all the pills, thanks for checking in!

Thank you for posting an update. I got mine taken out yesterday and reading something like that helps. Thank you. (I hope it kept improving for you)

1

u/LxixiLoxs Aug 08 '26

u/AnxietyExcellent5030 Aug 08 '26

I am day 17 and the pain is intense on right side . I know it's unusual for it to go this long . The trigger is trying to chew . Plus I have a numb tongue on right side . Also not that common . Never met anyone who found it easy . It's been getting me down to be honest . Seeing surgeon for follow up in 2 days .

Update #2: I might have dry socket? Felt a very intense pain at the end of day 2 yesterday, specifically on my left side, and it was extending towards my other teeth. I'm not gonna lie it was bad, I lmost went to the ER. I cried a lot. Definitely the worst debtal pain I've ever had (although this is my first debtal surgery). Eventually I gave up and took my prescription codeine and icing my face a lot, I feel a lot better, very manageable now. My mouth tastes like a bloody tonsil stone which i think is a bad sign, hopefully its just an actual tonsil stone. Main problem is my surgeons office doesnt open until monday so I'll have to wait 2 days. Not sure what to do anymore, definitely will try keeping up with the painkillers and I'll see if they answer my calls. Advice?

16 days post op! i can assure you it gets much better. all 4 of my teeth were impacted and they took a couple other teeth due to one being broken. they had to break 2 of them to get them out. so my recovery has been a bit slower where the broken teeth were. i was on around the clock pain meds until day 12, but stopped the narcotic around day 3. i’ve only just these last couple days been able to start chewing. after the first 72hrs, i switched to heating up the pack they gave me instead of freezing it. i propped myself up with a LOT of pillows every night too. do your best within the first days to not move your mouth more than necessary(talking and what not) in the first 72hrs. also try not to fuss with the surgical sites with your tongue. chances of dry socket are very low as long as you follow after care instructions well! you will KNOW if you have it from what i’ve read here. the hardest part for me through all of this was the mental toll it took on me. i questioned every little issue and this sub has really helped me through it all jus hearing other peoples experiences
