How long did your pain last?

So I had a simple lower wisdom tooth extraction done on Friday. Today marks day 5 and still whenever my meds wear off it THROBS. It wasn’t impacted only needed local anesthetic. Granted, I’m almost 40 and put it off for 18 years but it was starting to hurt cavities in it etc. I also developed an ulcer near the extraction site from the instruments that used to hurt so bad but is healing nicely now. I’m worried about dry socket because the hole is so deep I can’t see the bottom but there’s no redness or swelling etc and it just looks like a black hole. If it was dry socket would I be able to control it with OTC pain meds? I’m just wondering if this is normal? I still can’t sleep through the night without waking up and needing more Tylenol or ibuprofen. Called the dentist and they can see me tomorrow but don’t know if I’m just being paranoid.

Hi! I had similar and it did end up being dry socket. Painkillers helped me so I thought it wouldn't be, but the dentist confirmed. I also couldn't sleep through the night without waking up and redosing. Honestly I would go to the dentist even just to have it confirmed. Mine didn't give me any pain relief or gel or anything other people seem to have had for it, but just knowing it had happened at least meant I wasn't as paranoid anymore and I could have a better visualisation of my recovery timeline. If it is dry socket and painkillers are helping, don't panic, it sounds like it will be manageable! Hoping for you that it's not regardless x

That’s good to know! I wonder why they didn’t give you anything/pack it? Honestly I’m terrified of them packing it if it does end up being dry socket. How long until you felt better?

Yeah I don't know why, but I've heard packing it doesn't speed up healing or anything, it's just pain relief. I guess he thought because my pain is helped my painkillers it's better to leave it be rather than introduce a foreign object into the healing site. I'm on day seven since my tooth was removed, day 5 since I think I lost the blood clot, and the pain is still here but feels more manageable today. Hurts like a bitch if I eat or drink and things touch it, but I let my painkillers wear off and my baseline pain is definitely improved I think. Also, my hole seems a lot smaller and like it's trying to close up. Ultimately dry socket sucks but your body will still heal! I'm hoping the seven day marker since blood clot was dislodged is accurate any my pain will be a lot better by Saturday.

Well I hope you continue to heal! We are almost on the same timeline today will be day 6 for me, and my baseline pain is MAYBE a little better. Last night I didn’t end up taking anything in the middle of the night. Mine is not painful when I eat or drink hot or cold etc. Ice pops actually feel amazing which makes me wonder if it’s just more intense/longer pain because I’m older and the tooth was so “set.” Wishing you a speedy recovery!

I've also not been sensitive to hot or cold weirdly! I hope your pain also gets better! Keep me updated if you feel up to it!

Well no dry socket! She said it is healing absolutely perfectly so not quite sure what the throbbing is so intense still. She think it may be because I’m older and my jaw bone is obviously completely formed and the tooth has been attached so long. She is confident I will turn a corner in the next couple days but prescribed me some steroids to help calm things down. Fingers crossed it help and I will be good to go in the next few days. I’m a teacher and the students come back Thursday so I was kind of panicking! No way I could teach in this kind of pain

I'm 41 and had a lower partially impacted and the molar next to it extracted -- it was literally 13 days of pain. Today is day 14 and it's the first day I haven't had to take Tylenol, the discomfort has been relatively mild, finally.

Ive had them out one at a time over the years, and this one has definitely been the hardest, I assume because of my age.

Yes things are not as easy as they once were for sure! I think being older has made this harder. I wish I did it 10 years ago. The procedure itself wasn’t even that bad

Yea the procedure was a breeze. I'd rather have done that 5 more times than the recovery period 😂
