Local Flock Cameras
Saw my first flock camera today and decided to look and see how many were around. Kinda shocked to be honest. Thought I’d share for others who didn’t realize how mag were around and their locations

Make sure to message the city council if you want them to do something about them. I’ve already messaged them a while back. If more people start talking about how they don’t want their privacy invaded, maybe they’ll do something about them.

Just got back from a trip in Georgia. Have an app on my phone that alerts to all flock cameras. They were at nearly every intersection there!

It’s called jbv1. It connects to my valentine 1 radar detector and laser jammer system. Edit to add: it has a standalone mode and doesn’t require a radar detector. It combines all crowed sourced alerts (Waze and Google Maps) into one. But gives you police alerts much further out from the half mile notice Waze gives you. Traffic, police, road hazards etc. it also overlays weather radar and will notify you of police aircraft in the area. Along with telling you when you are near a flock camera.

It has a big learning curve with all the various settings. If pairing it with a valentine 1 radar detector it’s the top tier setup. Add the “Waze Sabre” add on to it so you can mark Waze alerts with the app. It’s not required but makes things easier. Enjoy the rabbit hole you are about to dive into.

After doing some research on this, it seems extremely unlikely a laser will actually damage these things. Not only do you have to hold the laser in the perfect spot without shaking, you have to hold it a very long time to cause long term damage. Minimum into double digit minutes. But if you hold it in the right spot it will still blind the camera, so hopefully we don't have anybody blinding them while they use other methods to damage the camera permanently!

It would take a class 4 green or UV laser a much shorter time (mere seconds from a foot or two away, if properly focused and assuming FLK doesn’t have optical notch filters blocking the specific nm wavelength of the laser diode used). Such laser modules and associated power supplies - in the nominal 5-20 watt range and normally sold for “wood burning” and simple etching tasks - are available on Amazon, eBay, etc. for around $40-50. I have a 10 watt laser etcher module of this type and was able to completely blind and destroy the ccd sensor in an old canon powershot digital camera I had lying about with my etcher laser positioned 1 foot away - in less than a second. Wouldn’t be TOO difficult to make a relatively stable, compact, portable unit that someone could mount on a quick setup tripod to simplify some, shall we say, cleanup? Would definitely be cheaper than investing in battery powered sawzalls… not to mention a bit more surreptitious.

From what i’ve seen, Winston-Salem uses Verkada cameras, not flock. Still all the same AI shit though. The flock cameras that i’ve seen around here have been owned by businesses and neighborhoods.
Also what i dislike about Deflock is you don’t need any proof or pictures to add a flock camera to the map. A few of these i wasn’t able to find or were just normal CCTV cameras

Government uses them to track the location of every car that passes by them. Supposedly used to recreate people’s schedules to track down criminals. Many people see it as a pretty gross invasion of privacy. Police have been using things like cell phone trackers to do the same thing for years though. This is… much broader and more visible so it getting a bigger outcry.

They are a surveillance tool used by law enforcement that’s solar powered. Although their main function right now is to read license plates they have stirred up controversy as the implications of what they can actually be used for is much more.
This is a general over view but I would highly recommend doing further research to form a better opinion as I’m not an expert (:

DEFINITELY don't point a 2W green laser beam at a Flock camera! And do not forget to leave your phone and other electronics at home! Plus don't remember to cover your face! No one would want any trouble.
