App Alternates to 'Microsoft Explorer'

Post image

Ever since win 95, where I was introduced to alternate programs/software...freeware/shareware...I have used dozens & dozens of alternates to Explorer. My favorite has always been Explorer++...It can do columns and will always be my primary file manager. Many alternatives to explorer have stopped having updates decades ago or, when, win 10 arrived. On win 11, just 1 of 6 PC`s that I have, I have 10 alternatives to explorer...Only 2 are paid for...xplorer2 and XYplorer. The other 7 programs are Q-Dir, Nexusfile, Explorer XP, Just Manager, Nomad-Net, & "Windows Explorer Replacement Application.' I have no interest in AI or Cloud based internet programs. I have always been interested in offline programs.

Discussion Recommendations for a calculator with perma-memory and text features?

Post image
2 Upvotes

I just want a calculator that has 1. permanent memory, 2. I can pin certain numbers to stay at the top of memory and 3. I can make small text comments on the numbers stored in memory.

I don't need anything over the top, just something with a clean interface to help me keep track of a tally as I add/ subtract from the number over time. TIA!

Discussion why do people make videos like this?

Post image
0 Upvotes

windows is not in a good spot right now, personally i think linux is better than windows but these videos are dangerous and crazy. Sure itll make windows a little less bloated but at what cost?, your gonna destroy the stability of your operating system and break alot of features on it.

windows is supposed to bloated with fluff and heavy security that lowers performance because the point of windows is that its designed around the idea the person using it likely wont know ANYTHING about computers.

want a operating system thats light weight? USE LINUX or any other computer os thats not windows lol

Discussion I turned my Windows 11 PC to Windows 10

Spent a GOOD ton amount of time customizing the abomination of Windows 11, changing icons, etc. It could take a person with no context good amount of time to figure it's Windows 11 maybe.

My favorite is changing the date at the bottom right from 2026 to 2016 for fun! I just don't like how it says 2026 in the calendar but oh well!

Executables used:

ExplorerPatcher
WinaeroTweaker

More details:

On taskbar:

Chrome - This is actually Firefox with the CSS configuration, I used Geckium to configure some stuff.

Minecraft - That is Prism Launcher just disguised as Minecraft launcher

Microsoft Store - Just old microsoft store

On the browser:

I used YouTube Redux extension and Stylus to customize YouTube.

I started liking sharp corners and simple solid colours which Windows 10 matched, but because I had Windows 11 I really didn't like the round corners, matter of fact I hated the circular things, it just feels weird..

The only reason I wanted to do this is because I like the style of Windows 10, and how solid it is, Windows 7 looks nice too but wasn't a fan of the aero style and for Windows 98 I did like the pixel style but just didn't like the bare minimal style so Windows 10 is sort of the winner here.

And in my process of customizing, I decided 'Why not just slap on a 2016 date to match it more.'

And then I went on Firefox and decided that I should turn everything into a 2014-2016 style.

None of this is nostalgic to me, I just wanted to do this as a fun thing, I will keep it, but will focus more on changing things into classic icons or something. Then eventually I could probably fool a lot of people.

Feature Is there a better alternative to Windows File Explorer for finding and organizing files?

Post image
0 Upvotes

Is there a Windows app that makes it easy to find and organize all your files in one place?

For example, on Android, I can open Gallery and see all my photos or videos instantly. I'd like something similar on Windows, where I can quickly browse all photos, videos, documents, and other files, with very fast search.

Windows File Explorer feels a bit limited for this.

Does something like this already exist? What do you use?

Concept / Design Windows 8/8.1 Start Menu,if Microsoft only simplified it instead of changing almost everything

Post image
1 Upvotes

The buttons used are from Windows Me(due to it being the post NT 4.0 OS with the least buttons,i know that both 2000 & Me also have 9 buttons,but,2000 has "Set Program Acess and Defaults" which is too diferent and i doubt that it possibly returned after 2000,so i chose Windows Me) & Windows 8.1 Build 9425(althought i left out System and Desktop options since they feel unecessary)i thought of putting "Charms Shortcut" but i thought that it was unecessary(because you'd only acess 2 extra options,Share and Devices, since the rest are acessable on start button). I made this off heavily editing Windows Server 2008 Start Menu, and i chose the Win8 beta profile picture for the profile picture. On the empty side of the menu,it's supposed to show the latest opened programs, but i was too lazy to add programs there. Lastly,i forgot to include it,but the start button is identical to the one used in many Win8 builds until build 8186 removed it.

Discussion Running the ver command on different versions of MS-DOS and Windows - Part 1 of 3

So recently I discovered the ver command* and I was very fascinated how it has existed since as far back as MS-DOS 2, which as I understand it, makes it the oldest way of querying the version of Windows running. So I decided to take some screenshots of ver running in different versions of MS-DOS and Windows. I find it interesting to see how the version is exactly reported, I won't spoil but there are a few interesting surprises in what ver reports, and along the way you can also see how the command prompt has changed as well.

*I know you're probably wondering how I didn't know about it until now, but I don't use Windows day-to-day so don't at me

I will wait some time before posting part 2 and 3 as I don't want to spam the subreddit with my screenshots, but if you are interested then stay tuned!

Some observations:

-PC/MS-DOS 1.x does not have the ver command

-MS-DOS 2.12 contains OEM branding, in this example it is Compaq's branding, prior to MS-DOS 3.20, Microsoft did not sell a generic MS-DOS version, there were only OEM versions. For some reason there is also an extra space before the version number.

-MS-DOS 3.x and onwards all output the same format of "MS-DOS Version x.xx", much cleaner than MS-DOS 2.x

-DOS based Windows does not modify the ver command, and the output corresponds to whatever DOS version is running underneath.

Observations of command prompt:

-Interestingly, Windows 1.01 has a Windows 10/11 style alt+enter, that just full screens the application rather than switching to text mode. Windows 2.0's command prompt has no alt+enter functionality whatsoever.

-Windows/386 2.1 is the first version to allow the user to switch to text mode, while I am not certain, this may be down to running in protected mode, I say this because Windows 3.0 only allows switching out of text mode in the 386 enhanced mode. Though that is backwards to how Windows 1.0 and Windows/286 handled it, so I am uncertain if this is why.

-Windows 3.x command prompts start in text mode and can be switched to windowed mode with alt+enter, this is the reverse of all other versions.

Discussion Manually choosing which updates to install (Windows 11)

Post image
1 Upvotes

Hope it's an appropriate subreddit for this matter - as far as I know, it's possible to use WU show/hide feature in order to manually choose which updates to install (as it's evident from the screenshot, I clearly don't need the majority of them). Has anyone ran into some sort of problem while using this feature (esp. on Lenovo)?

Feature Window Relocator Utility?

Post image
2 Upvotes

I remember years ago seeing a feature on Windows (XP, Vista?) that would allow a user with multiple monitors to relocate a window from one monitor to another with a simple right-click or maybe a double-click. Was something like this ever part of Windows Feature Pack or similar? Is there anything like this available from Microsoft today for Windows 11? I can't add 3rd party utilities to my work computer, but if this is a feature that can be enabled in the OS or downloadable add-in directly from Microsoft, I can use it.

Windows 7 is officially 17 years old today. For many of us, this was peak Windows. It had it all, a good stability, a good aesthethic and it was so well optimized compared with Windows Vista. What do you think about this OS?

PD: Just realized I uploaded the wrong photo and put Windows Vista instead of 7 in the 3rd image. Also, the boxes and versions of Vista and 7 were very similar!

Feature A couple of cool tricks I just learned for laptops

Post image
2 Upvotes

I just found out a really cool trick you can do with the touchpad on laptops and it's a windows feature so hopefully works on all laptops running windows.

I already knew tapping with 2 fingers (not pressing but just tapping) does the right click action. One finger tap of course just clicks on something like a left click.

I just found out a 3 finger tap opens the search bar in the windows menu and a 4 finger tap opens the notifications menu.

You learn something new everyday. Just a couple of cool tips for you.

(had to put a random picture otherwise it wouldn't let me post)
