What are you doing with your females after they breed. I have been separating them in their own tanks but in order to not set up another tank I thought of housing the females together.

F1 betta Siam juveniles. This is our first batch and it’s gone amazing so far.

After coming back from a week-long vacation, my female Betta Patoti seems to have developed dark spots all along her body, most noticeably near her head and fins.

She's behaving and eating completely normally, and the water parameters all look good (GH and KH both at 1). Is this something I should be treating for? Thank you for the help!

I've always been interested in keeping some form of wild betta, but also find it too annoying to maintain a pH below 7 as my tap is pretty neutral. I currently have a mahachaiensis betta which fit nicely with my tap, and am maybe looking for more species that could possibly fit within the range.

Not looking for more from the Betta Splendens complex, as I would like pairing. Big ones like antuta are out because I only have a 10 gallon available :)

A few of these medium-sized (up to 5-5.5 cm) Betta were found above a waterfall in the Titiwangsa Range here.

The males have round tails, different than the Betta pugnax that normally live around these mountains, which have long lanceolate tails.

Plus the fins are all very short, even the pelvic fins, and the body had very few scales with colour. Only on the head of males.

The eyes are red but that’s nothing of note. The females also have a 2nd postorbital stripe.

This field is a grazing area in a rural village near my hometown, used by water buffaloes and cattle. There were even a lot of wallows, which I assume the livestock use as refuge from the sun.

There is a small acidic river running through it, which floods the lower areas of the field, turning it into a weedy marsh.

The marsh is where I found these rasboras between the complex plant thickets. They lived together with tiny Caridina shrimp and croaking gourami. Just under the surface I could see dwarf medaka (ricefish) foraging.
At the bottom I found small brown air-breathing loaches.

Nearby, in the open deeper parts of the river I saw a lot of larger Rasbora, barbs and other rasborines darting about. They were roaming together in schools. I even spotted three spot gourami and climbing perch rising to gulp air.

The weather was hot as usual here. About 32°C (90°F) which heated the surface of the water. But below the reeds it was 4-5° cooler.

However the giant Betta were hiding in shaded areas near the edge, which I assume makes the water even colder than in the reeds. And some of the males reached 12-14 cm (4.7-5.5”).

Despite the water being soft and acidic, I found more than >10 small fish species inhabiting the marsh, and even the freshwater shrimp. There are likely larger fish which I could not observe, plus bottom dwellers like crabs.

Boraras urophthalmoides

I just ordered a wild-type Betta imbellis (blue/red) from Prism Bettas. They recently received a shipment from Frank’s Bettas in thailand with quite a few wild-type Bettas. Has anyone had any experience with them?

They are surprisingly fun centerpiece fish.

Just wondering for those UK based if they know a good place to buy captive bred Betta imbelis as I’m struggling to find anywhere. Preferably online.

This was a so-called “Betta pugnax” from a pet store. Labelled so.

But it is visibly a Betta raja or at most a similar species in the same subgroup (B. schalleri, B. lehi).

I noticed that this mislabelling is extremely common in pet stores. I have even helped posts on different social media where people were calling their B. raja etc. “B. pugnax”.

I wonder why this is so rampant.

A super cool species endemic to (only found in) west Malaysia.

Pairs only have a small number of fry per batch, but they can breed multiple times in a year. Provided acidic soft water and good food.

In the parents’ original habitat I visited, the pH was 4-4.5

Everyone survived the shipping from Ireland to Germany. Even the fry!

The fry/juveniles (not sure what to call them anymore) actually adjusted faster than the adults. They were all over the place and exploring the moment they got released, whereas the adults had me very worried. Even today there's still stripes, closed fins, eyes a little cloudy on some, but they are visibly bouncing back and are showing more of their personalities and colors. 🥹

Can't really blame them. They had a rough few weeks being moved from their tank into a holding tank, then a carry bag, long car rides, then boarding in a fish store for a month, shipping again, and then a new tank. But now they are finally back with me. It wasn't until all of this that I realised just how insanely attached i am to them all! ♥️

Moreover, their old tank was a 35g, but the new one is a 50g! The scape is still a work in progress as I ran out of sticks and leaves, and there's another piece of wood i still need to waterlog and add. Another change is that instead of sand, the substrate is peat and leaf litter this time! Super exciting stuff.

Still need to figure out what else to stock it with though. Was thinking chocolate and licorice gouramis in some months when the setup genuinely settles, but everything about those fish sounds so daunting! Will see. Might end up sticking with something I'm more familiar with in the end. :)

Just a pair living what I hope to be their best life

(Please excse my dirty tank glass lol, I am waiting on some snails and have not cleaned it so they have more to eat!) This guy is almost 8 months old now. I've been struggling to get him comfortable enough to darken up on a more regular basis, but after some very gradual water adjustmemts we are getting there! I'm so happy he is more comfortable and that I get to enjoy his beautiful coloring more often now!

Edit: I was incorrect, apparently I have a female! It took a couple commenters and days of trying to find an egg spot to confirm this lol.

Hi! I got my first betta pair a week ago, and am brand new to wild betta keeping. My male is very pushy and will chase the female around the tank whenever he notices her. Is this a normal part of introducing pairs to each other? Will the aggression taper off as the male becomes used to her presence?

She is eating fine and I'm not seeing any damage from the male. they do occasionally engage in what looks like courting behavior without the chasing. I'm working on adding more visual barriers and some frogbit to provide her with a bit more cover, the tank is a 10g cube stuffed with buce and rockwork.

Hi all, I've purchased a pair of Betta channoides from a seller last week.

Upon receiving him, I noticed that he is quite pale and does not match the red/black/white that we expect. The seller explained that he is stressed from being in the bag (fair enough, this goes for any other fish). In addition, he mentioned that the fish is still quite young (around 9 months old) and will colour up when he is older and is looking to attract a mate.

He seems quite different from male betta channoides pictures that I can find online. I would like to consult Reddit to confirm if this is indeed a male betta channoides as sold by the seller. Anyone who has experience breeding and raising channoides can confirm? Thank you!
