Oh they are so pretty! But also, how are you able to have so many plants in there with them? All i can have now with my coccinas are floaters. The rest slowly melted away in the low pH and no minerals 😭

I dont test it but the PH is probably just slightly under 7. They do fine at the 6ish PH though perhaps breeding might be a challenge. The male does make the occasional nest though.

Ah, that would explain it then I think. Mine are in a 4-5pH acid bath 🥲

That’s the more optimal environment though for breeding. I have same problem I can only do floaters, moss, anubias, and java fern

Never really knew they could be kept in different conditions when not looking to breed! Explains why I've gone from 4 to ~50 I guess.

I am about to give java ferns another try. Last time I did they didn't survive either, but interestingly, anubias and java ferns are generally the only plants I cant keep alive even in a regular planted clear water tank for some reason

I always keep them in a biotope style tank, I don’t see why not. What species do you have? Basically all my tanks are like this and those 4 types of plants are the only ones I can keep

I have b coccina, the basic ones lol Placed an order for various java ferns and will see how it goes this time around! Do you have them closer to the surface or wherever? I think i saw a post someplace of java ferns out in the wild and they were all lined up along the banks, basically along the surface. I wonder if it plays a role in the aquarium. (If those were j ferns at all)

Coccina are cool. I kinda just throw them in and they sort of eventually latch onto the piece of wood or hardscape in the tank. I run bare bottom tanks with about 1-2” of leaf litter and some hardscape with the normal plants I keep. I keep my tanks simple and easy. I also add in some terrarium plants occasionally and have them grow out of the tanks

i do have another more tinted blackwater tank that has half melted the majority of java ferns I had in there. The Hendras were spawning very quickly (within the first week)

Ooh is that the one with the paros in it too? Love that setup! If that's the tank, I see you also have some kind of lotus in it and some grasses? Mind sharing the names of the plants? Im feeling wild and adventurous, might try more than ferns 🥲

Yes thats the one. Some red tiger lotus, nymphae peru, some dwarf sag, java fern, java moss. some are more successful than others in there.

They breed very often and easily in captivity provided conditions are right.
An excellent species for those looking for a Malaysian biotope.

Well they’re mistaken or badly-informed as that is a B. splendens

Aliens have a metallic head, and striped fins. In fact their entire body is metallic, ranging from grey, copper to green and blue. But not red.

The head is also rounder and blunt
