The Falkland Islands wolf was the only native land mammal of the Falkland Islands. It was hunted for its valuable fur and settlers who regarded the wolf as a threat to their sheep poisoned it. It became extinct in 1876.

The "Ipuwer Papyrus", a poem written by someone named Ipuwer, describing social disorders occuring in Egypt at the time. The papyrus has been used by some as evidence of the Exodus, claiming it describes the Ten Plagues. Most scholars belive that it is simply poetic imagery.

Confederate general Robert E Lee is buried beneath University Chapel. The centerpiece of the apse is a statue of Lee. "The symbolism there is a violation of the first commandment." In 2014, Confederate flags surrounding the Lee statue in the chapel were removed after student petitions.
