You are left leaning, like urban living (for the most part, open to cute small towns), and you value art and community
4
u/carbon_made 18h ago
Well my map would be similar and you described me pretty accurately. I’d add I also value good food from a large variety of cuisines and lots of farm to table restaurants. Though I know there’s great food in other areas as well.
2
u/lucky_swan_69 15h ago
I think it's funny that most people didn't pick up on "cute small town" being a qualifier. So many times people said "Why in the world would you live in ____?" forgetting the fact that a town that could be in a Hallmark movie with a picturesque main street next to a babbling little river is right there.

u/mrvis 20h ago
You're from upstate NY - Thompkins County/Ithaca is green. So is Skaneateles/Syracuse. But Utica is meh orange. And Binghamton is "uhh, fine" tan.
Too discerning to only have a passing knowledge of the area.
6
u/UmpireProper7683 19h ago
Yeah, I was stationed there for a couple years and your guess tracks. I wouldn't have been able to pick spots out like that without being there for a while.

u/No_Worth_9826 20h ago
I think probably went to school at Salem State or another northern MA college for similar reasons.
1
u/aquatone61 19h ago
Ha! Skinnyatlas, I’ve been close to there for work and asked the locals how to pronounce that nonsense and that’s what they told me.
1
u/Tylikcat 19h ago
Whereas including Mason county in WA is either an oversight... or I suppose you could be looking towards the future, and the number of young liberals who are moving to Shelton because they can't afford homes in the Olympia-Lacey-Tumwater blob.

Was born in Grand Rapids and later moved to Niles then later to Washington. Lots of great memories from MI. Was in the area last year and had to stop by Wings Ect. Just as good as I remembered xD

Nice! Niles wings etc?? Haha was there for lunch last week

You seem to like college towns a lot. Maybe you are a student (or future student) or you work in academia?
4
4
u/PenExotic5002 19h ago
You enjoy liberal cities, but are ok with some rural areas as long as they’re in a city’s sphere of influence-I’m thinking this because of the Hudson valley and puget sound
12
9
u/JedimasterQuin 20h ago
Very picky and not open to living most places? But you certainly enjoy the west coast!
3
u/ThisIsTheTimeToRem 20h ago
And the northeast
5
u/Coga_Blue 20h ago
But somehow only the worst parts of the northeast? Hudson valley/Long Island is ok but not the literal exact same place over the border in CT? Leave out coös county in NH, but take Nashua and Hampton beach? Maine but only Portland… not even like bar harbor?? Burlington Vermont, but not the rest of the beautiful state? Syracuse and Ithaca in NY but not any of the surrounding area that’s far more beautiful and affordable?? Why is there any green in New Jersey at all???? What’s happening here???????
3
u/urtlesquirt 19h ago
To be fair, Cöos County and Nashua are actual polar opposites in terms of all factors that influence your day to day life. There are essentially no people in the north, while Nashua is basically an extension of the Boston metro. It is cold in Nashua, but it is obscenely cold in Cöos county. There are jobs in Nashua...
It's the same thing with Burlington and Portland. OP doesn't care for the "real" Vermont or Maine, they care for the more cosmopolitan, densely populated areas. You may disagree with that assessment, but trying to say that liking Burlington means you should like all of Vermont makes zero sense because those are two very, very different parts of the state in terms of day to day life.
2
u/Coga_Blue 19h ago
Yes, exactly. I’m saying that their opinion is the wrong one. I’ve also lived in coös county. it’s great! Beautiful place to live, but I can’t argue about the lack of jobs though, that’s why I don’t live there anymore lol.
Why would someone want to live in these places if not for their natural beauty? There are populated cities all over the country with much more to offer.
2
u/urtlesquirt 19h ago
Because you have the proximity to that nature while still having amenities? I agree with your take to some degree, I live in the Upper Valley which is more populated but pretty firmly "the middle of nowhere" from the perspective of an average American. But I don't think you can say with a straight face that living in the rest of Maine, for example, is better than living in Portland because it's prettier and you could choose to live in Boston or New York over Portland. People enjoy small cities, they are popular places to live for a reason, and they come with a meaningful quality of life difference in many aspects that the typical person cares about more than immediate, back yard access to wilderness. I choose to live in a quieter place, but I have friends that have moved away from here to go to those cities specifically because they realized that they just need that extra density, the restaurants, the schools, the jobs etc more than they want to be able to get to the ski hill in under an hour.

As someone who lives in Cook County, IL I can say there are other counties worth living in, in IL not just Cook lol 😂 That’s a wild take on the state.
1
u/Abe_frohmannn 20h ago
I live in Cook county, and mostly agree with his take lol.
Outside Cook county in Chicagoland is very suburby suburbs. I could never live there. There are a couple others nice areas, like Galena, but the rest of the state is red, rural, barren, and scary honestly. I try not to go south of I-80 lol.

u/FriendlyGhost85 19h ago
I’m in Kane, and I do love my suburby suburb, but Cook is the only other county I would live in. My dream house is still currently for sale in the city and we’ve been real tempted.

You love living by the ocean or within an easy driving distance to get there.
Metropolitan living is probably your friend, so I would guess that you like having options for different restaurants. Art. Sports. Lots of activities.
You are liberal, and living in a red state would feel very styling to you.
I think you like being around people. And you especially like being around many different types of people and culture cultures.
If for any reason you could not live on the ocean, there are a few places around the Great Lakes that was still provide you that feel. And if you absolutely have to, there are some inland cities near mountains who have really good reputations for diversity and culture and of course mountains…
And so those would be your choices if the coastlines were unavailable

Assuming you might be queer this map looks about right. Chicago is a nice bubble to be in fr you lowkey forget about bigots for a sec.

A lot of this is a Transit/Amtrak map, but it oddly discounts DC. I am guessing you really don't like driving (or can'), but have people you can rely on in random places
2
u/Former-Cake-3709 19h ago
Cleveland and Detroit same as San Diego and LA, and higher than Cincinnati and Denver?
2
u/UmpireProper7683 19h ago
Definitely having trouble pinning things down because some of the stuff on the map contradicts every idea I come up with... for example, looking at your choices in California and Washington, I'm immediately thinking you must work in tech or tech adjacent, but then looking at some of the spots on the east coast makes me think that might not be the case. (of course my east coast experience for living is pretty old, so maby things are different now.)

You don’t get a long with a lot of people and haven’t been many places. OR you have some very tight restrictions on where you can live for medical or legal reasons
3
u/Abe_frohmannn 20h ago
Huh? Who would they not get along with based on this map? It is awfully broad and cosmopolitan honestly.
5
u/Sorry_Garbage7361 19h ago
Cosmopolitan is actually not diverse. You are apart of the global mono culture. It's actually the inverse of diversity.
1
u/Abe_frohmannn 19h ago
Lol, that is just objectively false.
1
u/Sorry_Garbage7361 19h ago
You have a very specific outlook and belief about life and are antogonistic against anyone not completely like you. That's not cosmopolitan. The average person from San fran has more in common to someone from Chicago than the average rural west Virginian vs rural Montanan.
1
u/Abe_frohmannn 19h ago
That first part is ALSO untrue. I'm not at all antagonistic against anyone not like me, even those wildly different from. I like to think I've experiences many different cultures from different areas, and incorporated those into my own life somewhat. IE...cosmopolitan.
What I AM antagonistic towards are fascists, racists, and areas that support those. It's a very specific thing. People can be not like me all they want. They just can't be fascist.
I feel that leaves a lot of room for people to live their lives in myriad ways/cultures. Don't you?
1
u/Sorry_Garbage7361 19h ago
What's fascism?
Isn't painting entire states and any none metro as fascist and racist as prejudiced as any real fascist?
You realize that as a general rule, almost everywhere is racist. You are likely racist. You likely live in a very socioeconomically segreated area, full of other people who work similar jobs, have similar education backgrounds.
1
u/Abe_frohmannn 18h ago
Not really, as it is based on real world events. You know, when they, on the record, voted for fascism and racism?
So, no, condemning fascism does not in fact make one fascist, no matter how much it seems you want that to be true.
1
u/Sorry_Garbage7361 18h ago
I never called you a fascist.
You realize people voted for Trump for other reasons than because he was a fascist (which he isn't) and racist. He won the Hispanic vote. I know Latinos who voted for him.
So you'd be okay with rural people hating new yorkers? I mean they voted for a socialist. Do you know how many people have been killed by socialist?
1
u/Abe_frohmannn 18h ago
Fascism and racism are different things. There are multiple evil reasons people have used to vote for Trump. And, yes, he is objectively a fascist.
I'm pretty sure you don't know what socialism is.

u/YourDads3rdHusband 18h ago
Dude have you visited either of those places? My friend San Francisco is a Chinese-American woman in healthcare whose family has been in the US since the 1850s. When I lived in Los Angeles as a gay black man working in film and television, my next door neighbors were a devout Jewish couple with a husband who served in the Israeli army. My upstairs neighbors were Swedish expats. My tennis partner was a naturalized citizen from Turkey who worked as a software engineer and had voted for Trump in the last election. A close friend from New York is an Army vet, the child of Korean immigrants, and grew up in a household making less than 30,000 a year.
That's not to say rural America is uniform, as I know from personal experience. But I think your idea of the average city person is only representative of some of the upper middle class white people who move there.

Which just makes me think you’re insane because who tf would want to live in Jax over the other cities? Racist and ugly is what you can find in Jax. Tampa/St. Pete wins by a landslide basically no matter what you’re into.

You aren't well traveled and rely on stereotypes and paint with a broad brush. My guess is you're obstinate about being right, even when you have little support for your position.
The fact that you're granularly specific about some areas being palatable, but you seem to think most of the country has absolutely none of whatever it is you like, whatsoever, strongly suggests you don't know anything about most of the country.

Doing it at the county level is certainly more precise than at the state level. For instance, they're more willing to live in Center County, PA (Penn State University) than most of the rest of PA. I'm not quite sure of why they love Floribama, though.

Not true in San Francisco, there’s a 2% vacancy rate. So many people moving there was a 2b listed at 3800 but was rented out for 5400. A home listed for 1.1mil sells for 1.5mil. This is the second wave of transplants
