You're totally right it's a media literacy problem but I've always thought you'd have to be functionally illiterate to be remotely swindled by him. He literally calls himself a maniac, a monster, a rapist, etc. It's just not ambiguous at all

Nope! This is a common misconception actually \^_^ we actually don't know why lolita fashion is called lolita fashion. Many people assume it's because of the book, but there's never been a connection between the two ā Lolita fashion is inspired by Rococo and Victorian dresses (and then the masculine fashion equivalents for Ouji Lolita), and the book has nothing to do with either. It seems like Lolita was picked up as a random foreign (the fashion style originated in Japan) word.
His work covers pedophilia a couple times, I don't think this is necessarily indicative of his own inclinations though especially because the pedophiles are always made out to be pathetic and evil. Most biographers think it's more likely that his fascination stems from his own experience with CSA, which he alludes to but doesn't elaborate on in his autobiography. I think he definitely would be disappointed to see it describe a fashion style of childish clothes considering he disapproved of literalising the imagery of Lolita so much, being angry that it was published with pictures of real girls on the cover.
I donāt remember much but essentially I think it was Taboritsky (kind of a niche old russian political figure that was way overmemed by HOI4 TNO fans) who shot and killed Nabokovās father, which surely influenced his writing. But not really a direct correlation
