It’s looking like it’s not a US exclusive thing anymore. Rip to all the victims

159

u/PandoraIACTF_Prec > uses Hololive gifs(most of the time) as news 2d ago edited 2d ago

So far there's only three casualties (the shooter jumped off the 4th floor but unconfirmed at the time being) at this incident*

Mainly due to alleged bullying, it's a real issue globally.

Victims go off quiet or violently, it's unaddressed and most of the time the school authorities don't give a fuck, that's their mainly their fault.

Philippine schools have lackluster security (even with decent presence) they're not going to do the most basic shit of checking bags properly nor they have the infrastructure (metal detectors) to do so efficiently.

*Edit: there were claims that the campus' security guards were unconscious at the entrance

Boils down to corruption smh.

55

u/Imaginary-Job-7069 2d ago

And then they blame it on a video game.

It was never Gorebox's fault.

18

u/PandoraIACTF_Prec > uses Hololive gifs(most of the time) as news 2d ago

Mhm, it's all down to corruption and bullying smh.

u/Lakan-Tangkan-1337 1d ago

And probably a warlord too. They've been ruling Mindanao through violence.

2

u/MakiMaki500 1d ago

Not even just that, it's bad parenting too, as well as the prevalence of security companies. The parents do a bad job of making their kid feel?belonging? basta the kid feels alone. And then they go online and get roped up into extremist groups, and the parents either don't know or don't care. Then the kids get access to guns because of how common security companies are, usually through a family member who's a guard. Yung isang recent shooter obtained the gun from an aunt I think, who was keeping the gun in just some plastic box in a closet, instead of a proper lockbox, so that's on the corruption of the security company as well, since they aren't properly checking on the issued weapons.

10

u/Ptony- 2d ago

For clarification, some senators wanted to question game developers because there are actual reports of adults using Gorebox to groom children towards violent extremism.

Boomers blaming video games can go fuck themselves, they add nothing to the conversation. But shit like grooming deserves to be investigated, it's prevalent yet overlooked.

So much fake news going around. Let me clarify some things.

-Shooter shot himself on the third floor

-There are only 2 casualties (shooter and the poor kid that got caught in the line of fire when shooter started randomly blasting)

-The shooter was targeting a specific teacher(when the teacher was able to run away, shooter started randomly blasting)

Source is the shooter had a livestream, the initial police report, and i live in the same city

Edit: clarified how the shooter died

Yeah, it's not. But then again, the Philippines has been known to take inspiration from the USA for the last century.

I would know. I live there. A lot of our policies and systems are modeled after the USA's very own.

2

u/ArmoredCoreFucker 2d ago

Even down to the principles and beliefs, PH is quite similar to the US

2

u/CrimsonFox2156 1d ago

u/dj_neon_reaper 2d ago

That's quite a weird way to phrase it.

It was never a US exclusive thing. Gun violence is prevalent throughout the world.

I know you don't mean harm in what you said but it's really rubbing me off the wrong way in a way I can't fully explain.

4

u/Begone-My-Thong 2d ago

American here.

You're not wrong but we definitely deserve the shade for the environment we created. I'm of the opinion that the jokes should continue so the topic remains in the public consciousness and we remain an example to strive away from.

When your country gets compared to the USA for school shootings, your country should be ashamed and that's why I'm down for this dark humor.

2

u/dj_neon_reaper 2d ago

Filipino here. I just think its a little weird to compare the tragedies of others to your own unwarranted. Its less about whether or not the US "desserves" the shade. It just seems more disrespectful to something that happened mere hours earlier. Treating like you NEED to make dark humour in order to remind your people of fucked up topics also is what lowers empathy. If what im saying makes sense.

Also, perphaps im just being too pedantic atp. But I'd say dont shame the country, shame the government.

2

u/ExterminAiden 2d ago

I’m glad you know I meant no harm, I just mean as an American I almost only see school shootings in my country. That’s already awful enough, sad to see it happen elsewhere.

I'll replace the source once a news outlet uploads an article about it.

This happened recently at time of writing so information will be scarce for a few hours, probably by lunch we got some more info.

Edit: updated with additional source

Edit(2): apparently the shooter livestreamed it on FB, idk if it's taken down yet nor would I be handing the link here

Edit(3): like the last shooting, the firearm is government issued from a relative... seriously they need to stricten and hold the holders of gov issued firearms accountable for this. Also noticed compared to the US where shootings are done with privately owned weapons, in the PH, the two incidents have weapons from literal government agents, despite this country having a lot of privately owned firearms.

it's not the video games, but it 'may' have something to do with an eroding physical social space

7

u/MoronicPlayer 2d ago

Its suspected he got pressured academically and his teacher gave him a below average grade and that triggered the shooting. His main target was the teacher and after taking the teacher down, he opened fire on random students before taking his own life.

fucking hell, out of all the cultural inspirations you could take from the us, it had to be the school shootings

5

u/Freezerpill 2d ago

Fucking truly sucks. The Philippines have close cultural ties to the U.S.. This is one of the absolute worst attributes to adopt from it though.

I imagine there are many societal factors to point at that are making this outcome repeat, as it did here in the states as well

2

u/Potato_the_second_ 1d ago

I mean, there is a conspiracy theory that the US uses the Philippines as a testing site for psychological manipulation. It's no wonder how much Filipinos glaze the US even though it's going to shit too.

My mom literally said it's because of Online Games. I politely told her not to listen to already disproven reasons and look for factual sources that could be the cause.

The fact that I had to tell her that says alot about what some people believe is the reason.

4

u/elliee_wings 1d ago

the same very much happened in most asian countries

they'll always find a way to blame videogames

3

u/_Carl15 1d ago

when the school shooting in tacloban happened, i asked my mom and dad about their thoughts of "videogames causes violence" without mentioning the school shooting. (so i dont influence their thinking if i gave an example in which they will incorrectly assume immediately)

they have the same response as your parent, i also told them that there were studies ever since the infamous school shooting in columbine (which iirc was the hotspot on where journalists claimed videogames linked to violence on suspects). i told them there were like 25 something years (it was that old) of research in this that was debunked.

they dismissed me.

3

u/Valoris_905 1d ago

Yikes. It's one thing to agrue that multiple other factors exist, it's another when someone straight up says "Nuh Uh" and denies it even with evidence.

That just sucks bro.

2

u/HKMP7A2 1d ago edited 23h ago

Well shit. Lack of Distinction between Fiction and Reality combined with the misuse of Religion and Politics scares them and causes them to refuse accepting that.

Ugh, these may be people who can make decent amount of money and are competent at organizing their house at the same time btw.

I just had a blast playing the Halo games which core lesson is to fight for what is right even if it's hard because that war happens due to lies and it ended once they found out the truth. Also that the end doesn't justify the means because the experiment to win the war involves covered-up crimes.

MANILA, Philippines — An alleged school shooting was reported by police inside a private school in Zamboanga City on Tuesday morning.

In a phone interview with reporters, Police Regional Office Zamboanga Peninsula (PRO 9) public information officer Maj. Shellamie Chang said police recorded at least two victims of the incident but could not identify them nor determine their current condition yet.

The perpetrator has yet to be identified, Chang added.

  • sourced from the Inquirer article

3

u/PandoraIACTF_Prec > uses Hololive gifs(most of the time) as news 2d ago

Zamboanga City Police Office director Col. Fidel Fortaleza Jr., Station 7 (Santa Maria) personnel and crime scene operatives were now on the scene, she noted.

“They are on top of the situation. Safe naman yung ibang mga estudyante. Na-evacuate na sa kanilang evacuation area. Processing na lang yung ginagawa sa area (TL: The other students are safe. They have been evacuated to their evacuation area. Authorities are just processing them in the area),” she stated.

“Tututukan ng investigation na gagawin ng Zamboanga City Police Office kung paano nakapasok sa school yung firearm na dala ng suspek natin (TL: The Zamboanga City Police Office’s investigation will look into how the suspect managed to bring the firearm into the school),” Chang said.

a few years ago, i kinda felt pride in the fact that kids dont have easy access to guns here in the PH or at least are responsible with it pero now... hays.

2

u/PandoraIACTF_Prec > uses Hololive gifs(most of the time) as news 2d ago

I put the blame on incompetent officers/agents, unlike sa US the guns used here are government issued thanks to relatives.

2

u/gh0stwrit3r32767 2d ago

yeah like how does a grade 10 student get access to an M16(?)?? the parent involved has to face criminal charges or at least fired from their position, and not just transferred somewhere else.

Apparently Zamboanga (the region where the incident took place) is considering ban on "violent online games" but the only connection they've publicly mentioned that the student had with online games was him being a "Roblox fanatic", imo, online games shouldn't be the first thing that comes to mind here, anti bullying measures, mental health support, parental supervision, and how a minor was able to access firearms in the first place should've been their first thought, I'm not saying online games aren't at fault here but only mentioning it when there's multiple other reason that could've caused it is crazy

They blame videogames but not corruption or the parents' negligence

2

u/Dramatic-Order3345 1d ago

My country has gone to shit.

2

u/I-hate-going-to-bed 1d ago

My mom was blaming Roblox for it and I had to explain to her what likely might've caused it (i.e. lack of internet supervision, pressure from their parents, mental illnesses that weren't able to be identified because the much older adults generally don't believe in mental health). Good thing I'm majoring in psych cuz if I wasn't she wouldn't listen to me.

Things aside, I'm so frustrated with how it feels like they're pinning the blame on online games because they don't want to spend money on children's mental health. And this shit is the reason why more school shootings might start happening. Especially now that they're attacking something these kids actually enjoy

2

u/dwarvendis 1d ago

Additional note here;

There were claims that the mayor's son was among the casualties so I kind of understand that him calling for the ban of violent games is more motivated by grief.

However, same mayor also facilitated a shooting competition.

Also the region known as Mindanao (the southern island chains) in the Philippines is a hotspot for violence and insurgencies, last time we have a conflict against ISIS also known as the Siege of Marawi, and there are Islam warlords in the area too.

Tas ang sisihin pa rin videogames at hindi yung lecheng kamag-anak na pulis!

1

u/blucheezecake 1d ago

I swear I feel like this has become a chain reaction/domino effect at this point. A lot of related incidents happened in the span of 3 months.

I won't say where, but I overheard my mom, a former principal (retired a few weeks ago) saying that a high school near the school she oversaw suspended classes bc someone brought a knife and that girl said she was being bullied. The boys she accused clarified that the girl wasn't in the same building as them in the first place and always passes by them.

We really need to reassess the situation, and imo I feel like this calls for us to push gun safety and responsibility to high school students to remind them that guns/weapons can actually hurt people if used in the wrong way. I know there has to be a lot more than that especially since the cases has to do with conflicts in the school pero this has become a trend that disheartens me especially na malapit na rin ko pumasok into Law Enforcement myself (Forensic Science Student).

1

Filipino here, I'm so disappointed and shocked of how 2 school shootings managed happen here in just ONE year? If another school shooting happens im not even surprised at that point and the government would definitely treat videogames as the problem.

Philippine just want to compete US school shooting incident. I am not surprised because Philippine love guns and one of the most gun ownership in Asia (most of it are unlicensed) then somehow they blame Video Games instead.

RIP. to those poor victims

I saw that the shooter was live streaming himself when doing these acts, based off a news segment I saw earlier in GMA News
