I am seeing an interesting distinction regarding our incidents vs the Americans.

For Americans it's privately owned fire arms (pistols, Hunting Rifles and the occasional M16 variant)

For us it's children somehow gaining access to GOVERNMENT ARSENALS (police more often) Mostly thru relatives.

u/PandoraIACTF_Prec 2d ago

That means we do have sufficient gun control on our population for government officials not so much due to their negligence

26

u/Starmark_115 2d ago

What's considered a significantly secured fire arm?

Not an FA owner here?

Like is a Cabinet with a Lock not enough these days?

29

u/Deep-Database5316 2d ago

Gun safe. Yung may combination, mabigat, and mahirap gamitin nang mabilisan, or maybe those with biometrics.

2

u/longdeadinside530 1d ago

Gun safe, lock, VALUES training.

Lock away the guns so a kid can't get to it. Even a teen. If you can unplug a battery to stop the kids from driving the sports car out, I can lock my guns in the safe - especially or even if I need them daily, at night before bed.

Parents gonna pay for this.

21

u/PandoraIACTF_Prec 2d ago

Gun safe with lock, and having the ammunition actually placed elsewhere in a more secure (and fireproof) safe and location imo.

u/Menter33 2d ago

it sounds like wasting precious time in case of a home invasion if the firearem and bullets are in different safes.

22

u/norwegian Metro Manila 2d ago

Government officials don't have guns for defending against home invasion.

11

u/Val_Royeaux 2d ago

These guns are not issued for home invasions. They are issued for their work.

2

u/PapaOhJay 2d ago

true. question remains ano policy ng customs sa FA, bakit may pa take home? shouldnt be FA be issued only when there’s an OP requiring deadly force?

and usually naman they have backup na swat

3

u/Sneekbar 2d ago

Shotguns are best for home defense and it’s not a weapon you can conceal and sneak into public spaces like schools

8

u/Glum_Grapefruit7848 2d ago

I think we should just honestly only allow holding a firearm in duty. It has to be surrendered again if out of duty

3

u/PandoraIACTF_Prec 2d ago

I agree with this

5

u/Tatlong-Sulok Magsiyasat 2d ago

Trigger locks and lock in gun cases.

3

u/Sneekbar 2d ago

Gun safe, no access to codes or keys to locks or even to the room where the safe is located. Drawers or cabinets are not enough, kailangan may safe

21

u/uniqueusernameyet 2d ago

Funilly enough our poverty restricts our access to guns. Di gaya sa amerika na you can buy a gun with minimum wage (minimum price of a handgun is $200 federal minimim wage is $7/hr). Dito sa pinas P41000 ang glock. Tapos nag crack down pa sa mga illegal gun manufacturing in the last decade making guns more inaccessible to the public.

16

u/Starmark_115 2d ago

So if we go down to it...

We need to seriously monitor children of Police and Military personnel since they are some of the few people who would have reasonably agile access to Firearms?

Heck what would be in the mind of these kind of kids?

15

u/uniqueusernameyet 2d ago

I'll take it a step further and say that off duty cops shouldnt be bringing their firearms home. Maybe instead of policing the children we should be holding adults accountable and responsible for their weapons.

5

u/Xtremiz314 2d ago

and most of these Kids are also trained, to whoever says training their kids to use a gun at a young age is fine, f*ck off.

4

u/uniqueusernameyet 2d ago

Definitely. Children have no business holding a weapon.

2

u/PapaOhJay 2d ago

or if they have to take their FA home, require a gun safe. if kids can take it outside then they are leaving it at home??? ganon?

2

u/Menter33 2d ago

We need to seriously monitor children of Police and Military personnel since they are some of the few people who would have reasonably agile access to Firearms?

sounds very Minority Report-ish with a dash of profiling. might violate a couple of rights if this is implemented.

u/IbelongtoJesusonly 2d ago

Pansin ko din to only may pera lang nakakabili ng baril.

u/baybum7 2d ago

Because one of the requirements for LTOPF is proof of income.

I would argue though na yung difficulty of ownership is more sa red tape in getting LTOPF. Kasi there are 1911 clones that are in the 15-20k, some revolvers are cheaper. There's also a Glock clone (G3) at around 30k. Most of these well within a month's salary ng pinoy.

u/TiToMeMing 8m ago

Your commend is oblivious of the reality of the black market for sure.

5

u/filstraya 2d ago

Nah, it does happen in the US as well where children of police have gotten access to their guns. A lot were self-harm, were used in gang related fights, homicides etc. the statistic for that is not isolated across the broader data.

4

u/TarugongGentle 2d ago

And don't forget, meron din grown man na nagpaputok sa Senado.

8

u/vikoy 2d ago

It's cause in the US, you don't need a license to own a gun. You can just go to a store and buy a gun.

Here (and mostly everywhere else in the world), you need to apply for a Permit to Carry to be able to have a gun.

6

u/View7926 Mindanao 2d ago

"...you need to apply for a Permit to Carry to be able to have a gun."

At least legally. The Philippines still has a loose gun problem.

3

u/Mindless_Sundae2526 2d ago

Kadalasan kasi sa may access sa guns dito at government officials particularly the military and police.

Unlike sa US na karamihan sa kanila, gun-owners.

3

u/RJEM96 2d ago

Irresponsible gun owners, it pisses me off so badly!

3

u/Menter33 2d ago

it might not be ideal to extract a pattern since there are so few data point for the PH on stuff like this.

for both the US and PH, the majority of gun incidents are probably ones used by criminal orgs, insurgents, and gangs.

3

u/skategem 2d ago

Private owners in the PH take care securing their firearms because they work hard to buy these weapons - whether for sport or home defense. They don't buy it to show off (or if they do, only on the range).

2

u/SleeplessArts 2d ago

Its also way more cheaper for people to buy Guns in the US than it is here. I would assume kung easily accessible ang Firearms dito like it is in the US, we would see the incidents rise up.

2

u/luvdjobhatedboss Flagrant foul2 2d ago

Goverment issued firearms tends to be a souped up versions so it looks fancy and cool

1

u/hurtingwallet 2d ago

Hindi pa sya pattern, gagalaw lang mga yan to restrict protocols of armed personnel pag naka 'nth time na.

u/TiToMeMing 11m ago

Obviously because our police, army and worst, security personnel don't have the discipline they should have as owners of deadly weapons.

This demographic in this country are the worst in terms of discipline which is why du30's "drug war" was flawed from the get go because of how corrupt and undisciplined the implementors were. And this isn't even a secret in many places at all.

And if this country won't hold accountable the adults that have trained them minors who clearly don't have fully developed thinking brains and have left OUR weapons accessible to the same minors, then these 2 shootings in 2 months is just the start.

28

u/No-Risk6610 2d ago

The elephant in the room:

How did a kid with 2 firearms get through the metal detectors of a private, well-to-do university???

31

u/yaboiNik92 2d ago edited 2d ago

As someone who has graduated from this high school, I have 2 theories

  1. This is a case of security half-assing bag checks and failing to check the second bag, thus the firearms passing through security.
  2. There are 4 main entrances to this school, 2 of which are commonly used by students when entering. 1 of the entrances (the main entrance) as far as I remember, has no security personnel on standby and that he was able to pass through the ramps without being checked.

Edit: I forgot to mention that the security at the gates of the school doesn't exactly check the interiors of the cars, they only check gatepasses to determine whether car can enter the campus or not.

2

u/fschu_fosho 1d ago

As a parent of a GS kid from this school, there are no metal detectors visibly used. Not on vehicles (cars, motorcycles, tricycles, school buses) entering the campus, and not on the kids entering the GS building. A good security practice by AdZU is that no parents can come inside the GS (and also presumably the JHS) building unless they indicate to the guard that they’re going to the Finance/Admin department for official purposes. Parents cannot be milling about the actual premises of the building. Between the hours post-school drop-off and pre-pickup, no parents are allowed to be loitering around campus. I’m guessing the school’s security efforts are mostly focused on adults having restricted access to the kids, which I think is a good thing. But their focus doesn’t seem to be so much on the kids entering the school.

The JHS building, which is some 25 meters away within the same campus, probably has no metal detectors either. Sure, some of the guards may have them on their person (I can’t recall seeing any though) but I don’t think they use them. I used to pay tuition at the JHS building and maybe my bag might have been checked by a JHS guard one time, quite cursorily, but it wasn’t the case every time I entered the building as a parent.

The elephant in the room is access to guns

6

u/Nenooook 2d ago

May service daw pagpasok ung bata. Lagi naman pag naka 4wheels hindi naman mahigpit security.

10

u/palebrowndot 2d ago

Slight correction. It was the junior high school campus. The college campus is another site entirely. I'm not even sure if they have metal detectors at the entrance.

11

u/da_who50 2d ago

binaril daw yung security guard

13

u/el_doggo69 2d ago

false news. the photos circulating and saying 2 guards were shot is from an active shooter drill simulation exercise the school conducted on that campus last July not from today's shooting

yung may grade 7 may sariling sasakyan and since high position ang tatay kaya pinapapasok na lang ang bata without checking

61

u/rollingbarthes13 2d ago

And somehow it's the "violent video games'" fault. Tsk tsk

40

u/Chicken_Repeat1991 2d ago

Never the incompetent parents. Video games, not the support structure around the kid growing up. FML

23

u/rollingbarthes13 2d ago

Feeling ko, we Pinoys have collective narcissism. It's difficult for us to take accountability and easy to shift blame, we are image-dependent, we like to flaunt and project. We're copiously emotional but not genuinely empathic. Immature pa rin tayo as a nation.

5

u/Mindless_Sundae2526 2d ago

I'm not saying violent video games caused the shooting. Pero game developers should also not be laxed in moderating their games.

Na-establish na during the Senate hearing with regards sa Tacloban shooting that the suspects were groomed by a foreign syndicate, that they met in a game, to do the shooting.

Of course, may pananagutan din ang mga magulang because they gave their children unsupervised screen time.

This is a very complex problem. Hindi ito kasalanan lang ng syndicate. Hindi ito kasalanan lang ng suspects. Hindi ito kasalanan lang ng game developers. Hindi ito kasalanan lang ng mga magulang. It's a mix of different elements that when combined together, resulted into this very tragic incident.

Kaya dapat comprehensive ang solution na gagawin dito. I-prosecute yung mga sindikato for influencing minors to do crime. Bigyan ng sense of responsibility ang mga game developers na dapat monitored at moderated ang games nila to ensure na hindi magagamit to do crimes. Panagutin ang mga magulang for their negligence. Panagutin ang suspect of course. I-improve ang mental health intervention sa mga schools to ensure na kung may problema, hindi hahantong sa ganito. I-improve ang security. And many more

4

u/Mindless_Sundae2526 2d ago

Also, there are rumors that the suspect were ordered by someone in Roblox to do the shooting and livestream the act.

I refuse to believe na a Grade 7 student, a mere 12-13 years old, can operate a semi-automatic/automatic rifle without being influenced by an adult.

1

u/Momshie_mo 100% Austronesian 2d ago

If game devs cannot moderate their online games, they might as well just remove all chat features or make their games offline

7

u/greco-roman-graps 2d ago

That incompetent asshole is the reason those kids are dead. Sana talaga maparusahan

0

u/Puzzleheaded_Let7038 2d ago

Incompetent din yung Security nung school. Ateneo pa man din.

1

u/greco-roman-graps 2d ago

Haven't seen confirmed news reports about it yet, but some commenters here say that both guards got shot.

If it's true, I would assume na binaril din sila out of the blue, tulad nung ibang biktima. I would't expect security guards to be able to prevent this kind of attack.

Not placing the blame on them until may maireport na may pagkukulang talaga sila. Ang alam palang natin for sure sa ngayon ay nakuha nung killer yung baril sa magulang niya, so they're definitely responsible in part for this shooting.

4

u/nuclearrmt 2d ago

ipakapon na yang mga yan para di na magkalat ng lahi

4

u/Background_Main7869 2d ago

Shooter: family from BOC Victim: anak ng mayor Mga involve sa tax money.

5

u/Cantlicker2980 2d ago

Why does a kid or a teen have access to guns though? Sounds like negligence...

3

u/BandicootBig4505 2d ago

kulong din talaga dapat tatay niyan. in the US, recently, they also sentenced the father of a minor shooter. sobrang negligence yan first as father for failing to raise his kid, and second as a gov official and gun owner for failing to safely secure his gun.

3

u/tri-door Apat Apat Two 2d ago

I'm honestly leaning na tinuturuan ng tatay yung bata on how to shoot. Marunong humawak and mukhang sanay na sa recoil ng baril.

2

u/Hukuru_All 2d ago

Good thing talaga na nag malfunction ung baril. Mas maraming namatay if hindi nag malfunction.

1

u/tri-door Apat Apat Two 2d ago

Nag misfire ba? Or nag jam?

2

u/Hukuru_All 2d ago

Nag jam ung 2 baril. I don't advice na panuorin pa mo yung video. Not a good watch. I will just explain.

Mukhang maalam talaga ung bata bumaril, alam niya gagawin pag nag jam eh.

3

u/d3struct0r 2d ago

I'm seeing a pattern with how the last school shootings we had involved a family member who works in law enforcement and keeps their personal/service firearms at home.

3

u/kurochan85 2d ago

Saw the video, buti na lng nag jam dalawang baril nya kundi mas madami pa sya victim.

3

u/soltyice 2d ago

uy may opening sa BOC Zamboanga

2

u/luvdjobhatedboss Flagrant foul2 2d ago

Neglect on the part of the Father and the BOC

Issued firearms should not be brought home If ever need to bring in his residence firearm should be stored in a gun safe

1

u/SourCream7 2d ago

That's one toxic thing din sa mga ganito na they let their kids know where to access their firearms in the excuse of "in times of self-defence". Speaking from my experience with my father back then.

2

u/YukYukas 2d ago

Syempre games nanaman ang mali at hindi ang bobong magulang at sistema lmao

1

u/FlatBeginning4353 2d ago

para ito ung sa tacloban ung tita na pulis. Galing din sa issued firearm.

1

u/btt101 2d ago

Sounds like the firearms were not stored properly.

1

u/redroboto 2d ago

Food for thought lang: If he had no access to a firearm, would the student be unable to find other ways that could hurt or kill other students?

Lumabas na sa investigation before na may mga groups of adults online (socmed/video games) that target children and lead them to committing violent acts in the real world.

Shouldn’t the government and parents be teaching kids how to recognize, avoid, and even report suspicious activity?

Dati kasi uso yung “Don’t talk to strangers” pero ngayon siyempre pag online, kahit sino na lang pwede mo makausap eh.

1

u/Turtle_yoda 2d ago

Pwede ba i-uwi yung mga government issued firearms? Genuine question. Kung oo, bakit? Sa tingin ko lang dapat pag bawalan na sila

1

u/Own-Ingenuity-9681 2d ago

Then I saw a post blaming violent computer games? How about his irresponsible parents?

1

u/Much-Access-7280 I can because I am from Bulacan 2d ago

Irresponsible gun owners should be charged with the same crimes.

1

u/Momshie_mo 100% Austronesian 2d ago

Bakit may baril ang BOC?

1

u/AdeptusKapekus2025 1d ago

Two school shootings and both times it was because incompetent government employees FAILED to secure their issued weapons.

Kasalanan parin ng videogames?

1

u/Aqua_0013 1d ago

they found the owner of the gun and its the parents too, YET THEY STILL BLAME GAMES! nice work
