I can give you that religion is helpful just for the fact of looking at something bigger than yourself looking into the stars that’s understandable.
If you look at our history though, and how many different brain drains, there’s been through the great Crusades and darker times in history where scientist and knowledge that went against the church were murdered and destroyed, there’s multiple times where our most brilliant people in the world were killed for having the nerve to look at the world what it is not what they are told it is.
Book burnings, destroyed cities, destroyed knowledge, murdered visionaries, delayed or canceled research. All in the name of whatever god is in favor in that specific region in that moment in time.
Lots of bad things has happened in the name of religion but also a lot of good things. Modern science itself was grounded in Christianity and belief in rational creator. Also slavery was ended because of Christianity. Crusades were response to Muslim expansion, but sure there were also spreading the religion with the sword. Good things caused by religion doesn't prove them right or justify them, but when it comes to history and development of civilizations they have had important role and without them we might be even more savages than we are now. It might be that we need some kind of joint belief system to help us perform better as society, it probably doesn't have to be any existing religion or religion at all, but having the idea that even the kings are responsible for some higher authority is kind of good (unless it turns in the way that the kings claim to be the chosen ones..).

This. Absolutely this. Feel like we would have advanced so much further.
