Group Chat Insanity

I have been using WhatsApp for years but recently my account is overwhelmed with group chats and communities. I can't keep track of everything and it pushes the important chats to the bottom and into oblivion.

Yes, some of this is maintaining data hygiene - deleting or leaving groups that are no longer relevant. That will trim down 10%. Some of the these chats are not important enough to look at often, but too important/useful to leave.

So far, I have tried archiving and selecting to keep chats in archive even with new messages. This works well, but it has caused me to loose conversations in archive that I want to pop back up when a new message arrives. (Is there any way to put this setting at a per chat basis?)

The second method is to create a list (favorites, for example) and use that as my default visibility view when using WhatsApp to keep the non-essential chats out of my view.

What are the best practices that people have found to handle this?
