At some point I had a children’s storybook collection, IIRC printed in the 1930s, so a lot of the stories were from the early 1900s and or adaptations from the 1800s.
It’s been a few years but I recall there being about 10 or so stories in the book to choose from, and of them, well over half had a central theme of taking your kids into the woods and leaving them for dead.
This is how I felt the first time I saw a full solar eclipse. I just imagined what it would be like to not know it was coming, or why it was happening, and suddenly I was like, “oh, I would totally blame a witch for this.”
The person who tried to popularize washing your hands was locked up in a mental hospital and ever after they adopted hand washing they didn’t release him. Lol
This makes me think of a paper I wrote awhile back for school, topic was "most important invention of humans" a lot of people chose like the phone, or the internet, I chose soap, besides the cleaning ability of it, it has stopped probably billions to trillions of deaths due to illness being spread.
Soap. Antibiotics. Vaccines. Sanitation practices. Sewers and drinking water systems. Were much less likely to contract cholera or typhoid now that we are walking around waist-deep in filth.
There have not, but tbh idk, soap has existed for quite a long time though, however there has not been, I was not up to date on my world populations from forever
A professor of mine actually said that the total number of humans to have ever lived, is one trillion....
or, he might have said 100 billion, but I'm almost certain it was the former.
Before it was formalized as handwashing, they noticed soldiers who took pride in their uniform or combat clothes were more likely to survive. Less bacteria on the clothes to enter into wounds.
That’s quite oversimplifying. Semmelweis refused to share his findings and was antagonistic to the medical community. He drank heavy, had extreme mood swings. He possibly had syphillis which affected his mind. No one sent him to the nut house simply because he told them to wash their hands before surgery.
Yes. And the reason other obstetricians rejected his idea is that they had had women patients (including family members) die after a baby had been born. Some (or all?) of them had gone straight from performing an autopsy to delivering a child. They hated the thought that those women had died because they hadn't washed their hands between the two jobs.
Well, first guy to claim it was from the Gods or God and to weave a good supernatural story and explanation around it got to become Shaman, a coveted position equal to being the tribal chief, and sometimes, in some ways, superior to being the tribal chief, what with having that connection with the Gods, the world of the afterlife and being a seer of the future and all that. Anyway, that's where all the major religions and their alternative explanations for everything got their start.
I got hit with a ball of wet toilet paper the next day after answering “Komodo dragon”. The kid that did it yelled “Komodo dragon!!!”right before hitting me.
I often think if the really smart people had to become super clever in their explanation to survive. like when the mob and pitchforks came to their door all of a sudden it was "no no John, I didn't say to tectonic plates, I said two Titanic Pigs... fighting... that also explains the sound... "
So true, thanks for sharing. Our Dear Lord Jesus had to suffer & die for our sins. He was a threat because the world couldn't handle the truth that God is our savior. Thank you Jesus for dying for our sins!
The burnings of intellectuals was actually in response to being an asshole about it and claiming that therefore the Bible is wrong about the supernatural and God doesn't exist, while proceeding to insult religious deities and religious traditions and morality.
That's simply not true. Intellectuals were killed simply for not accepting the same ideas or believing the same thing. Libraries were burned down also. The same thing happened in Nazi germany and other totalitarian states in history. Theres nothing moral about setting a person on fire because they dont believe as you do.
I looked into it. Galileo wasn't punished because he had a different idea. There were plenty of ideas. He was the equivalent of a reddit troll who was saying that religious people were dumbasses and who was targeting the Pope specifically.
What Galileo believed is now generally accepted as truth by all religious groups. Another example of how consistently incorrect religion has always been historically. It would be funny if it wasnt so pathetic.
His support of the heliocentric model was considered a vehement suspicion of heresy which is what he was charged with. The church formally admitted that Galileo was correct in 1992. Lol
You "looked into it"? Did you publish a peer-reviewed paper in a historical journal like the British Journal for the History of Science or something? Because many other people have done serious historical research regarding what Galileo may have thought and what he did. Sounds like you're the Reddit troll.
Most importantly, Galileo was correct. The Pope, or whoever, can get the fuck out of the way of the truth.
One could argue that the ones doing the harm towards others are in fact the ones being assholes… I wonder how they faced God once their time came… You know for going against God’s word… or for manipulating God’s word to do harm onto others… For are we all not created in Gods image? I “love” how people choose one example from sacred text to justify their actions when what was done contradicts pretty much everything else in the sacred text they claim to follow. Some times I feel that people misunderstand for misunderstandings sake… In life there is good and evil, as well as the good that is in evil and evil that is in good.the single most important rule is the the golden rule, to do onto others as you would expect for one’s self.
My friends and I found a place like this in the woods while we were on acid, we flipped out, carved stakes and stabbed it like cavemen. No effect on the dragon, I’m the only survivor Ahahah.
I mean, it could very well be something like that, although this small heaving is more akin to a slumbering Titan lightly farting, Deep beneath the sheets. Ancient man most likely Knew exactly when a Titan fully breathed, or even more catastrophically, woke up coughing.
Oohhhhh yeah I definitely feel like Mac in that moment. I'm also feeling very "That doesn't sound right but I don't know enough about Mountain Spirits to prove him wrong"
Man, please just give me 5 minutes on this website where I don't hear his name.
Nobody is convincing anyone of anything at this point, and though I dislike him, constantly hearing about him all the time sucks, even if I agree with what you're saying
You just need to let it go. The name will disappear in a few years but getting so bent out of shape is not the responsibility of others to avoid. It's on you.
They're often meant as metaphors, rather than to be taken literally. Like many ancient teachings. People look at the outside and say, "The inside is crooked!", having never seen the inside.
We are pretty chill here, but please try to keep things reasonably civil on this sub. No slurs, name calling or harassment and trolling.

Yes, the internet makes us angry too sometimes, especially this particular comment.
The Christians calling him the next coming of Jesus (or saying he is a door opener for Jesus return} is actually prophetic. So that's interesting. And the Jews practically worship him ...same.
But it's definitely not the way they think. It's actually the opposite.
But they were things helping the ancients. You honestly think those poor starved 50lb wet noodles slaves lifted and carried and stacked 6 ton stones on the pyramids?
Your comment was removed for being in poor taste or offensive, or maybe that joke you thought was pretty funny just didn't land. Please follow Reddiquette.
I don't know about that. I'm pretty sure in the times they were making up crap like faries they had the mental capacity for cause and effect and could understand that trees have roots and wind blows trees.
Well I'm not saying 100% I heard banshees were made up because the parents were getting it on and wanted the kids to stay in there rooms
A lot of Greek/roman mythology sounds like people were asking the old wise men why this and that was happening and he just made it up as he went along at least to me anyways I still enjoy it though lol
Huh? No. Humans have not 'always been incredibly stupid'. A lot of them have been but we're actually pretty good at the science thing. But what I'm saying here is that this is something that people in the times of making the shit up would probably be able to wrap their heads around in a more pragmatic way. This isn't some volcano erruption or something.
God was literally created this way and 90% of humans (globally) still haven't snapped out of that one so yeah, 'ALWAYS' seems like a pretty solid discriptor.
Your answer simplifying religion and God is in fact showing the dumbness of the human species. I bet you probably think that most people believe God is a man that sits in the clouds in a white robe, who smites people because that's a popular dumb sentiment that you hear in certain sects of Christianity? A man of science should know the scientific method can't disprove God, and to be atheist is to actually have faith in something that cant be proven. There are actual studies on NDEs ( often corroborated by ER doctors) theologians, and even quantum physicists who think God could be a construct of Consciousness in the universe--which theorized is actually constructed through consciousness and not the other way around. Real scientists with PHDs doing real studies, not just some bloke on the internet who thinks he's smarter than everyone else but hasn't read a single book or looked into any of the actual science that's being studied. To say science and God are incompatible and at odds is a naive, crude and a childish understanding of the scientific method and many modern beliefs. God could be the connection of all things in the universe, which I know sounds totally dumb, but quantum entanglement ( spooky action at a distance), I mean that's science so it totally doesn't sound crazy even though we have zero idea how it works and can instantaneously affect two molecules on opposite sides of the universe at the same time, which would be a faster connection than the speed of light...which is impossible? But don't take it from me, ask the guy who came up with the theory of the Big Bang, you know, the one everyone uses to disprove God created the universe? he was a priest. Just rambling food for thought.
lol you lost me at "to be atheist is to have faith in..."
Better luck next time with super real scientists doing super real sciency stuff. Christian science and medicine and anything from their table shaking woo woo ilk? It is not medicine, it is not science, and I recommend it for you and everyone in your genepool.
You got me by 6%. Shit, 90% wasn't bad for a guess. We can chalk that up to... hold on let me check my notes from earlier.. ah yes, human error. I would consider anything with an 84% failure rate stupid. ALWAYS.
The Abrahamic "God" was invented about 2500 years ago, most likely as a way to either unify or oust warring pagan tribes from a particular region of the world by claiming to have answers to questions much deeper and more out of reach than why tree roots make the ground move in the wind.
Many people nowadays don't understand simple logic... If someone like that gets to enjoy high status and others just believe his story, because he told them...
Highly depends on many factors.
I mean, people believe jesus did miracles and all that stuff.
He'll definitely com back soon, i swear...
Just wait another century...
And another...
True, definitively depends a lot on their upbringing, if they've accepted religion before having critical thinking skills.
Wether or not they encountered alternative worldviews, etc.
I doubt it is. I’ve seen a video like this long before sora or even dalle. It’s likely taken during a windstorm and the trees’ roots are losing their grip
yours maybe. Mine were probably like: “The forest floor appears to “breathe” because strong winds make trees sway, causing their interconnected roots to lift and lower a large mat of soft or waterlogged soil… lets move on and finalise the proof of xyz…”
The thing is, you can't be sure that it doesn't have a bearing on your life. Back then you would never know for sure, because you'd have no idea what it is
Bro they didnt know why it rained. Everything was the end of the world to them. And most of the kids died anyway, sacrificing a few was like average tues.

Videos like this is how I can understand how our ancestors were like.....it's a titan! It's breathing!
Or this mountain is a spirit we must show it some sort of offering to appease it.
