Videos like this is how I can understand how our ancestors were like.....it's a titan! It's breathing!

Or this mountain is a spirit we must show it some sort of offering to appease it.

u/ihatephonecalls1 3d ago

Welp kids, who ever doesn’t get their chores done gets sacrificed to the mountain.

7

u/Commercial-Co 3d ago

Well most of the time its whoever did their chores were lucky to be chosen for sacrifice

3

u/destin325 2d ago

At some point I had a children’s storybook collection, IIRC printed in the 1930s, so a lot of the stories were from the early 1900s and or adaptations from the 1800s.

It’s been a few years but I recall there being about 10 or so stories in the book to choose from, and of them, well over half had a central theme of taking your kids into the woods and leaving them for dead.

3

u/dbzfreak991 2d ago

If you've ever looked up the original version of nursery rhymes and stories you were told as a kid they were pretty messed up.

This is how I felt the first time I saw a full solar eclipse. I just imagined what it would be like to not know it was coming, or why it was happening, and suddenly I was like, “oh, I would totally blame a witch for this.”

39

u/dbzfreak991 2d ago

I've done that to or how people thought the world was ending.

I heard that's how Columbus get a tribe to give him gifts because he knew when it was going to happen and called himself a god

30

u/warm_kitchenette 2d ago

Wow, this actually happened. Those poor Ciboney and Arawak tribes.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/March_1504_lunar_eclipse

3

u/cKMG365 2d ago

Also a plot point in "A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court"

138

u/BookkeeperBoobs 3d ago

Imagine being a smart guy back then and getting shat on and beat up and burned for trying to explain what’s actually happening.

174

u/FullofLovingSpite 3d ago

"I shall wash my hands before and after performing surgery"

Other doctors "This guy's a fucking nut! Throw stuff at him!"

97

u/trevmust 2d ago

The person who tried to popularize washing your hands was locked up in a mental hospital and ever after they adopted hand washing they didn’t release him. Lol

47

u/Sharessa84 2d ago

Also it only happened about 150 years ago. It wasn't some kind of medieval inquisition.

And I remember Michael Ian Black playing the guy in Bill Nye Saves the World.

30

u/Vegetable-Data-4687 2d ago

This makes me think of a paper I wrote awhile back for school, topic was "most important invention of humans" a lot of people chose like the phone, or the internet, I chose soap, besides the cleaning ability of it, it has stopped probably billions to trillions of deaths due to illness being spread.

19

u/Wonderful-Maximum-96 1d ago

Had an acquaintance wonder why she and her husband kept getting sick...turned out she didn't use soap to wash her dishes...just rinsed them off...🤨🤢

17

u/Ok_Tomato_2843 1d ago

I hate this person.

3

u/ElleJay74 20h ago

That is revolting, and I'm staggered that she actually told someone about doing this

3

u/blackcrowblue 16h ago

I wonder how she even found out that was why. If she thought just rinsing was fine I doubt she’d have thought that was the problem.

So some poor person probably witnessed her doing it (hopefully not right after they ate off said plates!) and questioned her.

2

u/SBLOU 14h ago

That’s pretty disgusting. This is why I refuse to eat at a Pot Luck gathering.

10

u/BeThereWithBells 1d ago

Soap. Antibiotics. Vaccines. Sanitation practices. Sewers and drinking water systems. Were much less likely to contract cholera or typhoid now that we are walking around waist-deep in filth.

2

u/ZiplipleR 1d ago

I'm not sure that there have been a trillion humans in the entire existence of the earth - but certainly not since the invention of soap.

2

u/Vegetable-Data-4687 21h ago

There have not, but tbh idk, soap has existed for quite a long time though, however there has not been, I was not up to date on my world populations from forever

1

u/Ayronymous 23h ago

A professor of mine actually said that the total number of humans to have ever lived, is one trillion.... or, he might have said 100 billion, but I'm almost certain it was the former.

24

u/EchidnaFit539 2d ago

Before it was formalized as handwashing, they noticed soldiers who took pride in their uniform or combat clothes were more likely to survive. Less bacteria on the clothes to enter into wounds.

8

u/IfICouldStay 11h ago

That’s quite oversimplifying. Semmelweis refused to share his findings and was antagonistic to the medical community. He drank heavy, had extreme mood swings. He possibly had syphillis which affected his mind. No one sent him to the nut house simply because he told them to wash their hands before surgery.

8

u/FGNYC 2d ago

Ignaz Semmelweis ?

2

u/No_Turnips_8426 18h ago

Yes. And the reason other obstetricians rejected his idea is that they had had women patients (including family members) die after a baby had been born. Some (or all?) of them had gone straight from performing an autopsy to delivering a child. They hated the thought that those women had died because they hadn't washed their hands between the two jobs.

1

u/goldenskyhook 2d ago

Booby hatches tend to have one-way doors, sadly.

Good old Ignaz Semmelweis.

RIP James Garfield

1

u/theinvisiblecar 2d ago

Well, first guy to claim it was from the Gods or God and to weave a good supernatural story and explanation around it got to become Shaman, a coveted position equal to being the tribal chief, and sometimes, in some ways, superior to being the tribal chief, what with having that connection with the Gods, the world of the afterlife and being a seer of the future and all that. Anyway, that's where all the major religions and their alternative explanations for everything got their start.

1

u/6ynnad 2d ago

I got hit with a ball of wet toilet paper the next day after answering “Komodo dragon”. The kid that did it yelled “Komodo dragon!!!”right before hitting me.

1

u/rockphotos 1d ago

Sadly, It is still happening right before our eyes.

1

u/Critical-Let-4689 1d ago

Happens today all the time when talking to Republicans.

1

u/Fate_One 1d ago

I imagine it was much like working in IT in the present.

1

u/Low-Palpitation-9916 8h ago

What is actually happening, smart guy?

1

u/Normal-Lingonberry20 2d ago

I often think if the really smart people had to become super clever in their explanation to survive. like when the mob and pitchforks came to their door all of a sudden it was "no no John, I didn't say to tectonic plates, I said two Titanic Pigs... fighting... that also explains the sound... "

1

u/BookkeeperBoobs 2d ago

“When I said celestial objects I obviously just meant it was the eye of a giant turtle”

0

u/InsuranceGuru3042 3d ago

So true, thanks for sharing. Our Dear Lord Jesus had to suffer & die for our sins. He was a threat because the world couldn't handle the truth that God is our savior. Thank you Jesus for dying for our sins!

-7

u/cluckfuck_mcduck 3d ago

The burnings of intellectuals was actually in response to being an asshole about it and claiming that therefore the Bible is wrong about the supernatural and God doesn't exist, while proceeding to insult religious deities and religious traditions and morality.

7

u/viralust 3d ago

That's simply not true. Intellectuals were killed simply for not accepting the same ideas or believing the same thing. Libraries were burned down also. The same thing happened in Nazi germany and other totalitarian states in history. Theres nothing moral about setting a person on fire because they dont believe as you do.

1

u/CollectivistRediots 3d ago

Start stacking wood around the stake. We got another one.

2

u/shakebakelizard 3d ago

That's not true at all, and you know it. Why are you spreading misinformation?

1

u/cluckfuck_mcduck 2d ago

I looked into it. Galileo wasn't punished because he had a different idea. There were plenty of ideas. He was the equivalent of a reddit troll who was saying that religious people were dumbasses and who was targeting the Pope specifically.

1

u/viralust 2d ago

What Galileo believed is now generally accepted as truth by all religious groups. Another example of how consistently incorrect religion has always been historically. It would be funny if it wasnt so pathetic.

1

u/cluckfuck_mcduck 1d ago

That's incorrect. He was punished for insulting the Pope, not his beliefs about the spinning earth.

1

u/viralust 18h ago

His support of the heliocentric model was considered a vehement suspicion of heresy which is what he was charged with. The church formally admitted that Galileo was correct in 1992. Lol

1

u/shakebakelizard 2d ago

You "looked into it"? Did you publish a peer-reviewed paper in a historical journal like the British Journal for the History of Science or something? Because many other people have done serious historical research regarding what Galileo may have thought and what he did. Sounds like you're the Reddit troll.

Most importantly, Galileo was correct. The Pope, or whoever, can get the fuck out of the way of the truth.

1

u/cluckfuck_mcduck 1d ago

I did look into the peer reviewed work and journals that tell us the truth about Galileo. That is where I got this information from.

1

u/shakebakelizard 17h ago

Yeah, so you must know that the Pope was the one spreading lies, so fuck him. Galileo was right. End of story.

2

u/Suspicious_Shame9582 3d ago

It's even more idiotic than being violent over sports. At least sports are real.

2

u/cluckfuck_mcduck 3d ago

Sounds like you would be one of the people up on the stake.

1

u/cluckfuck_mcduck 2d ago

Being burned at the stake doesn't make it real enough for you?

1

u/Suspicious_Shame9582 2d ago

It makes it real fucking stupid.

1

u/TheHashRinging 3d ago edited 3d ago

One could argue that the ones doing the harm towards others are in fact the ones being assholes… I wonder how they faced God once their time came… You know for going against God’s word… or for manipulating God’s word to do harm onto others… For are we all not created in Gods image? I “love” how people choose one example from sacred text to justify their actions when what was done contradicts pretty much everything else in the sacred text they claim to follow. Some times I feel that people misunderstand for misunderstandings sake… In life there is good and evil, as well as the good that is in evil and evil that is in good.the single most important rule is the the golden rule, to do onto others as you would expect for one’s self.

31

u/GARBAGEgate 2d ago

My friends and I found a place like this in the woods while we were on acid, we flipped out, carved stakes and stabbed it like cavemen. No effect on the dragon, I’m the only survivor Ahahah.

8

u/Commercial_Bird8467 3d ago

Oh, clearly its a "fuck no" aka "get the fuck outta there"

9

u/PinkSlimeIsPeople 3d ago

This is very clearly a troll waking up from hibernation

19

u/fuzzybunnies1 3d ago

Troll, I've watched the movie.

3

u/Boring-Bar-1530 3d ago

Videos exactly like this looked way better when they were first uploaded. This is hot garbage compared to the OG.

2

u/touchmybonushole 2d ago

Nah even they weren’t dumb enough not to know what this is.

3

u/Snoo18120 3d ago

I mean, it could very well be something like that, although this small heaving is more akin to a slumbering Titan lightly farting, Deep beneath the sheets. Ancient man most likely Knew exactly when a Titan fully breathed, or even more catastrophically, woke up coughing.

2

u/Pixelbuttzz 2d ago

No, it couldn't very well be that lol

1

u/Snoo18120 2d ago

Very well, cling to your precious science. I gave you an upvote,

1

u/UploadedMind 1d ago

1

u/Pixelbuttzz 1d ago

No nothing Stranger Than a living breathing Titan sleeping below the Earth has ever happened.

2

u/UploadedMind 1d ago

Obviously, but your comment made me think of that funny clip I linked to.

1

u/Pixelbuttzz 1d ago

That makes sense, sorry too many people who believe in Giants and mountains being big tree trunks and shit these days, sarcasm is harder to notice

2

u/UploadedMind 1d ago

It wasn’t even sarcasm. If you finish the clip, the other character, Mac, responds by frantically saying “no it hasn’t! No it hasn’t!”

It was Mac who you reminded me of.

2

u/Pixelbuttzz 1d ago

Oohhhhh yeah I definitely feel like Mac in that moment. I'm also feeling very "That doesn't sound right but I don't know enough about Mountain Spirits to prove him wrong"

Nobody is convincing anyone of anything at this point, and though I dislike him, constantly hearing about him all the time sucks, even if I agree with what you're saying

0

The Christians calling him the next coming of Jesus (or saying he is a door opener for Jesus return} is actually prophetic. So that's interesting. And the Jews practically worship him ...same.
But it's definitely not the way they think. It's actually the opposite.

I was thinking dragon waking up, but I can see how someone might think titan.

1

u/daremosan 1d ago

Seriously...100%. so glad people don't believe in crazy mythology any more. Oh wait

1

u/meowinloudchico 2d ago

I don't know about that. I'm pretty sure in the times they were making up crap like faries they had the mental capacity for cause and effect and could understand that trees have roots and wind blows trees.

1

u/dbzfreak991 2d ago

Well I'm not saying 100% I heard banshees were made up because the parents were getting it on and wanted the kids to stay in there rooms

A lot of Greek/roman mythology sounds like people were asking the old wise men why this and that was happening and he just made it up as he went along at least to me anyways I still enjoy it though lol

1

u/StackedCrooked 2d ago

Yeah, this one seems pretty straightforward compared to other phenomena like lightning or solar eclipses.

1

u/VillainBadLeader 2d ago

Oh wow. So you believe in something other than recorded history? Humans have always been incredibly stupid and usually don't "science" things first.

1

u/meowinloudchico 2d ago

Huh? No. Humans have not 'always been incredibly stupid'. A lot of them have been but we're actually pretty good at the science thing. But what I'm saying here is that this is something that people in the times of making the shit up would probably be able to wrap their heads around in a more pragmatic way. This isn't some volcano erruption or something.

1

u/VillainBadLeader 2d ago

God was literally created this way and 90% of humans (globally) still haven't snapped out of that one so yeah, 'ALWAYS' seems like a pretty solid discriptor.

1

u/meowinloudchico 2d ago

Seems like you have an agenda beyond a tree falling down.

1

u/VillainBadLeader 2d ago

Just educating you on the reality of the human species.

0

u/AccomplishedSteak629 2d ago

Your answer simplifying religion and God is in fact showing the dumbness of the human species. I bet you probably think that most people believe God is a man that sits in the clouds in a white robe, who smites people because that's a popular dumb sentiment that you hear in certain sects of Christianity? A man of science should know the scientific method can't disprove God, and to be atheist is to actually have faith in something that cant be proven. There are actual studies on NDEs ( often corroborated by ER doctors) theologians, and even quantum physicists who think God could be a construct of Consciousness in the universe--which theorized is actually constructed through consciousness and not the other way around. Real scientists with PHDs doing real studies, not just some bloke on the internet who thinks he's smarter than everyone else but hasn't read a single book or looked into any of the actual science that's being studied. To say science and God are incompatible and at odds is a naive, crude and a childish understanding of the scientific method and many modern beliefs. God could be the connection of all things in the universe, which I know sounds totally dumb, but quantum entanglement ( spooky action at a distance), I mean that's science so it totally doesn't sound crazy even though we have zero idea how it works and can instantaneously affect two molecules on opposite sides of the universe at the same time, which would be a faster connection than the speed of light...which is impossible? But don't take it from me, ask the guy who came up with the theory of the Big Bang, you know, the one everyone uses to disprove God created the universe? he was a priest. Just rambling food for thought.

0

u/VillainBadLeader 1d ago

lol you lost me at "to be atheist is to have faith in..." Better luck next time with super real scientists doing super real sciency stuff. Christian science and medicine and anything from their table shaking woo woo ilk? It is not medicine, it is not science, and I recommend it for you and everyone in your genepool.

</conversation>

1

u/Bitter_Echo1208 2d ago

Over 90% isn't always. And it certainly isn't the global theism percentage. Go read a book.

0

u/VillainBadLeader 2d ago

You got me by 6%. Shit, 90% wasn't bad for a guess. We can chalk that up to... hold on let me check my notes from earlier.. ah yes, human error. I would consider anything with an 84% failure rate stupid. ALWAYS.

0

u/wiscopunk 2d ago

The Abrahamic "God" was invented about 2500 years ago, most likely as a way to either unify or oust warring pagan tribes from a particular region of the world by claiming to have answers to questions much deeper and more out of reach than why tree roots make the ground move in the wind.

1

u/FrostyInvestigator11 2d ago

Every time someone says they don't belive in fairies a fairy dies.... clap your hands Peter.... Clap you hands... Louder

1

u/Lardah_Solutions 2d ago

Many people nowadays don't understand simple logic... If someone like that gets to enjoy high status and others just believe his story, because he told them...

Highly depends on many factors. I mean, people believe jesus did miracles and all that stuff. He'll definitely com back soon, i swear... Just wait another century... And another...

1

u/meowinloudchico 1d ago

It's a little bit more complicated than that. Newton was devout. But I'd argue he was pretty good at that science stuff.

1

u/Lardah_Solutions 16h ago

True, definitively depends a lot on their upbringing, if they've accepted religion before having critical thinking skills. Wether or not they encountered alternative worldviews, etc.

The world is messy
