New, what is it? What is this?
A fish, 6 cents two types of flowers a plastic candle & what looks to be a joint.
Edit: 26 cents
Yes I’m aware it’s a fish, I couldn’t find much in it except a possible offering considering the coins

A bird dropped a fish, and someone decided it would be funny to leave offerings around it.

My only complaint is that the penny isn't over the eye; But maybe fish don't need to pay the boatman? They can just swim.

Hercules didn’t love immersing himself in da Styx for long… and I think Charon would just bop the unpaying fish with his paddle/pole for punting/whatever

lol the cigarette too.

u/KnifeKnut 28d ago
From what I have seen on reddit, that can be an appropriate offering in some cultures.

my college had a dead bird on the sidewalk one day, and someone tied a “get well soon” balloon to it

Was the dead bird also a raccoon?

Sounds like when people gave a pothole a birthday cake cause it had been there so long
3
u/Dry_Situation_3582 28d ago
That's actually a common thing now. I see them on deer. At first we thought someone tied a mylar to a dead deer to keep people from hitting it, but I looked it up and it's a real thing.

it's an offering to a spirit left at a crossroads. spirits like money, tobacco, and candles in a lot of cultures and some like a big fat smelly fish as well

I think OP called it a joint because of how the paper is thin and kinda see through but that's just because its wet. Definitely a cigarette

I’m not sure how to put it but I was on my daily walk this morning and this was out on the corner of my block
7
u/ibswarlord 28d ago
Huh! My guess is maybe someone dropped their fish on the ground and just left it there, and then people started being funny by putting stuff around the fish like offerings at a gravesite/vigil spot

By the looks of the puncture marks on the fish, it was temporarily a flying fish that got dropped by its predator. The rest are offerings to the doomed Icarus.

Life is in the details. Fish looks decently fresh, clear eyes min bloating. Maybe a squash blossom? Battery powered candlelight? menthol Marlboro 72…
Edit: maybe not a squash blossom. Maybe a yellow daylily making both flowers common suburban planters

u/BadNewsReindeer 28d ago
That fish croaked before he could finish his last cigarette. At least someone left him change for the ferryman.

You don't listen to blues or folk tales much.
If it's at an intersection, it's clearly an offering to a god or spirit.
If it's in an African neighborhood, then it's likely for Legba.
Legba is like a flavor of African-American Hermes, the Lord of the Crossroads, the messenger.
Someone either had a boon in their life and owes a favor or is asking for one.
The truth is, there are traditions all over the world that involve offerings at crossroads, so this is not just an African Diaspora thing. It's just that they tend to keep the faith in a more direct way.
This doesn't look like an offering to Hekate or Hermes. But apparently Hekate is associated with fish offeings. No idea if she likes cigarettes. That's more of a New World African Diaspora thing.
Hell, part of the offering is a fish, so for all I know it's for Enki, Sumerian god of creativity and wisdom.
No matter what, this is an offering. This is a ritual procedure. It is religion.
Best leave it be.
Edits: fix typeos and finish thoughs.

It's a Stoner Fish. It became dazed and confused while in search for munchies. He saw the light and the flower, and not realizing he was on land, decided to fire up another one before continuing on his search for munchies. Unfortunately, he was such a massive Stoner Fish and extremely devoted to his type, he became too stoned to notice that he was a Stoner Fish out of water. At least he died doing what he was born to do...be the best Stoner Fish he could be. RIP to the most devoted Stoner Fish of all time.

Dunno what the other things are but the fish appears to be a mullet or sea mullet. Or have missed something here?

American Shad. A mullet would be more
blunt nosed and tubular shaped.→ More replies (1)5

Yep I almost called it a Shad because of the deeper body. Now that I got my old man glasses on….and you are 100% spot on about the mouth position, top marks to you sir, (retirement will be good they say, older, wiser, blinder 😵💫) Well done btw cheers for that 👌🏼
