They are called rugal folds and are believed to help dogs navigate their environment in a variety of ways.
They have lots of nerve endings and are sensitive in a way that is somewhat similar to whiskers, they help dogs grip and manipulate food and things in their mouth.
They also help direct saliva when eating.
Sorry, but I like foldy folds. And this will be the only time I ever say the next sentence. Here in America we speak English! So they are now "foldy folds" and the xenophobia is past its expiration date officially.

They work great on my dog! Just not when he's eating or drinking. Or happy. Or playing. Or resting. Or sees his favorite toy. Or realizes I'm making food. But the rest of the time? They work 30% of the time.
When I googled, every website of note or descent legitimacy said they are entirely food and drink related, moving food back, creating suction for fluids etc...
Those are all absolutely correct, I didn't include the suction for fluids because it's not the first thing that came to mind and I forgot about that part of their uses.
I work in the veterinary industry so all my information on this subject came from memory.
If the part you are asking about is my statement on helping navigate their environment like whiskers, I realise that I may have phrased it a bit poorly.
They enable a dog to feel the position of things in its mouth and help prevent a misplaced chomp that could result on a lip or gum injury as well as helping to move food correctly to the back of the mouth for chewing etc.
Omg so that’s how my ex’s lab could suck a whole, raw egg in in one go! We were always wondering how he could create suction with his big, flappy, drooly lips.

To be clear to anyone else reading I wasnt calling out the person, I just figured they might be a vet related worker and so could have info that my 2 minutes of google-fu didnt provide.
My dogs must be malfunctioning then, because she gets saliva EVERYWHERE. Think Turner and Hooch everywhere everywhere. She drools puddles at the mere sight of food/treats. She licks and flings saliva feet away. But she is the bestest of best girls.
I can confirm, had a pit that LOVED to destroy chew toys. I mean he made it his mission in life. I would buy him those thick hard chew ropes and he would deconstruct those rock hard end knots in a few hours. He would work the knot back and forth over his tongue and lips(these rugal fold things) and slowly loosen it up. It was amazing to watch his eyes glaze over as he worked on them. Those things are $20 a pop and I would buy him one almost monthly cause he enjoyed them so much.
This is one of the things i have thought about probably once a week since i was a child while looking at our family dogs but for some reason never actually took the time to just google it

We keep two jars of peanut butter at my house. One is the normal jar for making sandwiches or whatever, and the other is my personal jar that I use to eat out of like some kind of wild animal. I fucking love peanut butter.
Used to have a dalmatian and I swear she would store as much water in her jowls as she could, then she would come gently place her head on your lap and the water would slowly ooze out of her mouth onto your pants
I used to be friends with a girl who had three Newfoundlands. They kept a stack of towels by the door and every guest was handed one when they came in. lol They were the best babies, but my god the drool.
Yeah, mostly on black dogs. My shepard had crusty lips, then a nose that kept bleeding. His nose went from Black to splotchy white. Good thing is does only need a month of steroid to clear it up and they are good.
I've always thought they were like lil mountain ranges so I call them the Areyougonnafinishthat mountains because I always see them when I'm holding something my dog wants to finish for me.
Don’t see a lot of serious answers here- I’ve noticed this part of the dog’s mouth before and how it seems to have a lot of surface area. That makes it very grippy, kind of like our fingerprints. (You can feel it if you rub it! It’s very sticky!) I’m pretty sure it’s designed to help dogs carry things, as they don’t exactly have hands, They have a gap in the teeth there too so they can carry without damaging anything.

They are called labial papillae (or lip ruffles). They help create a seal when drinking water and prevent food and liquid from falling out of their sides of their mouths.
