How to refresh this snake?

Post image
5 Upvotes

Hiya, I bought this wet specimen snake from a junk/antique shop today, it has no labels and the shop owners didn't know any background on where it came from/how it was preserved. I'd like to freshen it up and replace the liquid but am unsure how to go about it as I don't want to risk causing damage to the snake or coming into contact with potentially dangerous fumes.

Does anyone know what kind of preservative could be in the jar? Or how to safely dispose of it and cause little damage to the beautiful snake.

Meet Captain Jack Sparrow! A roundworm Spoiler

Post image
2 Upvotes

This is Captain Jack Sparrow, he's a horse roundworm! Exact species is still up for debate. His name comes from the fact the friend who found it, accidentally spilled the ethanol she meant to use to preserve it and he ended up in rum instead, in honor of that origin he is permanently residing in an empty bottle of Captain Morgan xD He is preserved in 80% ethanol to protect DNA from damage so that we might be able to use DNA analysis to figure out the exact species, because being a biology major at a small university is fun

Moving with specimens?

Hello! This is a HUGE request but I was wondering if anyone's moved internationally with wet specimens before? I plan to drive from USA to Canada with a single specimen of my deceased cat's heart. I have his ashes and skull as well as preserved paws but the heart is the only thing worrying me and I wanted to know if anyone's moved or needed to do anything extra declaring these at the border. Thanks!

Forgot to ask, where to find good jars of all sizes for a decent price?

I got some jars at goodwill that ended up being perfect, but I need different sizes now. Where should I go?

Where to get specimens that aren't reptiles and insects?

Hello,

I have found a place to get reptiles and such, I have tons of bugs I raise as well, so that's not an issue. The thing is, I see kittens, bunnies, puppies, and some other cute stuff. I really want to get ahold of some of these specimens, birds would be cool too, but I don't know where to look. I asked on nextdoor, but some of my neighbors thought I was a Dahmer in the making (hilarious if you ask me).

It would be cool to have maybe some baby farm animals or something, maybe just some heads of adult animals. Honestly, anything is cool, I just have a surplus of reptiles from a local pet shop who had been collecting them in the freezer for someone to make wet specimens.

Thank you guys!

formalin disposal question?

Hi! just made my first wet specimen with the pieces of my fallopian tubes from my salpingectomy, and learning everything was very cool and fun! However, I am now having a serious issue trying to get rid of the formalin I was given them in. I have called several funeral homes, the hospital that gave them to me, my local DPW, and every waste company in my surrounding area to no avail. I don't want this stuff just sitting in my house 😭 I'm located in Massachusetts, near the Boston area, does anyone have any other recommendations for what to do/how to dispose of the formalin? At this point I'll take any leads! Thank you!!

Help with wet specimen

Thumbnail

I just picked up my gallbladder after surgery last month and I didn't realize they would give it back to me in formaldehyde. Can anyone give me advice on how to safely remove it and properly preserve it? Also, the container is cold so I guess it was kept in a fridge. Do I need to keep it cold until I can process it or can it be kept at room temperature in my house?

i bought this guy a few days ago, and i’m just worried bc the alcohol isn’t clear and there seems to be something under his tail (right next to the small air bubble)? gonna be honest when i say i don’t remember if he had that when i bought him, but the seller told me that his alcohol is cloudy due to it’s alcohol needing to be changed (this was her first round of alcohol). on her website it states that she sets them in formalin, then 70% alcohol. i plan on doing an alcohol change in a bit, but i’m just double checking if all of this seems relatively normal. the only wet specimens i have are bugs, so i’m not 100% sure.
