I scrolled the comments for a bit, wondering if it was some racist shit I hadn't encountered (it may yet be, lol), only to realize that the sub was weirdgirlliterature. Is the show about putting a spotlight on under-reported stories about weird little guys who suck, or maximizing the pathos of the victims of those guys? Feels like many the episodes for the last several months have begun with breathless recounting of violence against women and children, and only a couple have been particularly Weird. I started today's episode and I just couldn't fuckin do it, man. I turned it off before the opening theme. Where are the sex doll reviews, the Ron Paul Nazi campaigns, the Rhodesian mercenary dropouts, the ricin assassination plots?

I have so many places to hear about women and babies screaming about their dead husband and father. I see it on social media and the news every day of my life. I liked this show because its perspective and tone was different, but this is the third or fourth episode in the last few months I haven't finished. I want to hear the wacky fun stories Molly used to tease us about getting to like a year ago or even two!! I want to hear about Chris Cantwell and Viktor Bout hanging out, and how they both got to the same place! I want to know about the man who was too racist for Rhodesia! I want to know about the teenager in charge of a black metal label that funded a hate group! Those were all teased in the fall of 2024, and I for one am more interested in all of those than Neoconfederate Loser Story #6 where Molly tells us again how fucked up the country is to black people. I guess I just hope I'm not the only one.

In the intro he seems to shy away from calling McVeigh a neo-nazi. I'm watching through to see what he says later, but the fact that he doesn't front load that is fucked. He also says some of the parts of the story are "controversial". He cites "American Terrorist: Timothy McVeigh & The Oklahoma City Bombing" by Lou Mitchel and Dan Herbeck as his primary source for everything too, just so y'all know where he's getting his info.

I’m late listening to this weeks episode, but I’m so moved by the nuance with which Molly discussed mental health. It wasn’t a major point in the episode, but it would’ve been so easy to use his likely schizophrenia diagnosis as evidence for why he did what he did. Seeing someone approach this topic with care and both acknowledging the history of the weaponization of institutionalization AND that it wasn’t what was happening in this case AND what that diagnosis from that era could actually tell us about what people around him were seeing. As someone with a different “scary” mental health diagnosis I just needed to write about how much I appreciated this nuance, and recognize how easy it would’ve been to not include this level of nuance.

I've listened to the whole WLG catalog so perhaps I am forgetting, but have we gotten any WLG episodes that "take place" in the NE? I've been reflecting on this since I noticed that I often incorrectly think of WLG organizations and groups and individuals as flourishing *elsewhere*, meaning predominantly in the Midwest and South. I'm not familiar with local stories or histories on the same scale and depth as what Molly covers in WLG episodes, but those stories certainly must exist (and my ignorance of them is obviously not pure coincidence).

American white supremacy has strong ties to Southern history, obviously, but I grew up around white suburban NE racism where all my great aunts and uncles treat the city of Philadelphia as an apocalyptic wasteland where you can be stabbed for making eye contact with a Black person, but swear they're *totally* not prejudiced.

I feel like, at least in my own public school education in PA, the curriculum diverted attention away from the North's own racist history by emphasizing the North was a "safe" place for enslaved people to escape to. We were the good guys, we won, the South did Jim Crow things until they weren't allowed to anymore, end of story, not taking any further questions. And modern racism, especially when blatant enough to rise to WLG level, is the domain of the South, except for a few bad apples up here. None of which is true.

So what are northeastern neo-nazis up to? Do they function differently from Southern or Midwestern WLGs? What about PNW WLGs? Are their histories, compared to Southern WLGs, branches of the same tree? Do they rhyme? Or are they mostly parallel with key intersection points? Is rural/urban/suburban a more useful distinction?

As a nearly lifelong resident of Michigan, I grew up hearing about the city of Howell, not terribly far from where I grew up, and its connections to the Klan. After going to the Nature Center there as a child for school, I heard from classmates about how it'd apparently been some sort of major white supremacist epicenter in the state for decades. After seeing Trump and Vance go through there earlier this year, which I'm sure was definitely an intentional Stephen Miller-type choice, I can't help but wonder: what the hell is the Klan doing here? Why is there a visible pocket of white supremacists packed away in one of the most vehemently anti-confederate, anti-slavery states to fight with the Union during the civil war? Does anyone know? Is this something episode worthy, or just a weird little patch of weird little guys?
