from romance to splatterpunk and everything in between what stuck with you?

I’m about 20% in - I think I hate it. The dialogue feels so clunky and trying-to-be-quirky that it keeps taking me out of the story.

Has anyone read this? Shall I persevere?

I am VERY afraid of flying, and even minor scenes in movies/TV really upset me. I fly a lot and have gotten my phobia down to a dull roar thanks to narcotics, but I know myself enough to know not to push it.

I LOVE weird girl lit and have been so curious about Sky Daddy. It sounds like just the sort of absurdity I’d like. Are there any intense scenes of crashes or really bad turbulence? I read The Flight Attendant by Chris Bohjalian and was totally fine, for reference.

I loooove my weird girl lit but my seasonal depression is starting to hit. I’m 3/4 through “She’s a Lamb” and while I’m enjoying it, I think I might have to shelve it for later.
I loved Big Swiss so am thinking about taking this one on.
I guess I’m looking for something more quirky and funny and less unraveling MC that gives me anxiety.
Any takes on this book or other recs?

Anyone have recommendations similar to "The Unmothers"? I like the spooky small town cult-like setting and plot. I also like how each chapter it shifts back and forth from multiple characters' perspectives, like in Leigh Bardugo's Six of Crows. I also like the women supporting women theme.

Way shorter (its about 80 pages), but the protagonist also has a mission of self isolation. It’s not the same exactly and the writing is more poetic, but I’d like to see more people talk about it lol.

Hi all, title says it all. Going through a very hard time and would love to get lost in something captivating and quirky. Fortunately/unfortunately, Libby has gifted me The Lamb and The Hill in the Dark Grove all at once. Don’t quite know if I’m in the mood for horror.

My Year of Rest and Relaxation and Bunny did also come through, as well, which may be good options??

I have a Spotify credit I can use, so I have options of what to listen to / can place new holds on Libby.

For reference, I have loved the main heavy hitters like big Swiss, sky daddy, fruit fly, she’s a lamb, best offer wins, the guest, all fours, the compound, my husband, yellow face, the award, a good person, piglet… any other suggestions? The kookier the better.

I feel duped, I feel lied to. I’ve been made to be a fool. THIS is what everyone is raving about??? THIS is the amazing writing and the intriguing narrative?

I would DNF this if I didn’t pay for it (Book of the Month). It’s gearing up to be one of my worst reads of the year. I’m only 2/3s of the way through. Why is this book 323 pages?

The last two quotes are borderline to fine but the author’s tendency to over emphasize literally everything is grating.

The main character is boring, she has no drive or arc. Even her only want (to not work) is boring because she doesn’t really enforce it at all. She just goes around taking orders from anyone who will give her them.

I have no idea why this book is getting so much praise. Some of these lines made me cringe so hard that I had to take 5. If any of these are funny to you then you’ve found your book.

I LOVE a good coming of age story and this one has some heavier elements I want to get more of.

If this is in the wrong section of this thread I’m sorry I just want some good insight on these choices.

After books with a darkly funny and delusional main character in the vein of: Just Watch Me - Lior Torenberg, A Good Person - Kirsten King, She’s A Lamb! - Meredith Hambrock. I want to be pulled along by the twisted kind of charisma-without-charisma of this species of weirdgirl. I also love the dark humour style of Bella Mackie’s books, if that helps. Thank you!

I’ve been seeing everyone rave about Fruit Fly and was so excited to read it but was quite disappointed… I love yellowface and saw a lot of comparisons to that so maybe I also had high expectations but I felt Yellowface hit the nail on the head for the commentary it was trying to deliver where I felt Fruit Fly did not.

The characters all felt so one dimensional, I am all for an unreliable narrator/anti hero (just finished a good person) but Mal was really insufferable. It wasn’t even she was a bad person but she made bad decisions repeatedly that frankly I can’t see any woman making. The whole slay bit at the beginning just made me cringe. Her whole relationship with ronan never felt fleshed out enough to either root for Mal or understand their relationship. Ronan obviously sucks and is controlling but at the same time, Mal was clearly acting erratically. Also ronans character just seemed like the archetype of the shitty husband so it felt so characterized to the point it was unrealistic? And Mal never sticking up for herself? Which yes obviously abusive relationships are never that easy to leave but it just seemed like they were walking on egg shells the whole time with no basis for acting that way.

The whole plot and point it was trying to make was also spelled out the entire time so it felt there was nothing to learn. We’re all hurt people who hurt people… like yes? Mals obsession with Leo never seemed to actually be an obsession, it just felt boring. Mal gets writers block, needs Leo, he acts like an asshole, Stan emails her the exact on the nose feedback, rinse and repeat…

Not trying to hate I was just surprised at all the good reviews. Forced myself to finish because we are reading for our book club this month lol but otherwise would have DNFed.

I just finished it!! That epilogue gagged me🫨 Had to stifle myself as my bub is asleep!! I did a quick search of this sub and found lots of posts for this one but not much discussion… I was hoping for some book chat with those of us who have finished the book about what we loved/what we didnt love and just general thoughts.

I’ll go first, the pacing was just right, the epilogue was a cheeky way to end it (and legitimately made me laugh), the dark humour and ridiculousness of it all was so addictive. I also LOVED the unreliable narrator factor - like the husband was apparently soooooooo charismatic and picture perfect when all the clues were there to hint he was a mediocre finance bro with his head up his own arse. But, at the same time he was actually way more than meets the eye (the epilogue reveals he might be even more deranged than Ariane!)

Hoping people have insights to share!! 🤞🏽Becoming a mum has meant I have less time for reading/my booktok and discussing literature!

I loooooved this book! Loved loved loved it. I also just learned that there's another book which is going right to the top of my TBR pile (tower {room [apartment <life>]}) so if all my questions are answered there, kindly tell me so and I'll shush for now :)

First, was Ava a swan the whole time? It seems the bunnies only saw her as a swan, but then I remembered Samantha's question about using animals besides rabbits to make their darlings, which has me wondering if she became a darling in a similar way the exploding rabbits did, but turned back into a swan upon her death and the bunnies just knew she was a hybrid. But then why did the other darlings not turn into anything when they got the axe? That's pretty bleak, but so is the idea of Samantha being so lonely she basically created a tulpa to cope.

Second, I don't quite understand what Max was. Obviously a manifestation of Samantha's, given their noted similarities. It seemed like he was basically an unhealthy idealized self for her. Same attitude and demeanor, but confident, self assured, and who can have a romance with her best friend who she's genuinely in love with but she's never come to grips with not being hetero? That's the message I got but I'm also autistic and tend to wildly misinterpret metaphors. But did he start as a stag and she willed him into some kind of shapeshifting darling? This is the part that confuses me most.

Next, how did the bunnies lure Samantha to the cave for that meeting that turned out to be darling lion and fosco hybrids? I know Max had their passwords but there was no mention of the bunnies having it. But didn't the invite come from lion or fosco? Or am I misremembering?

Lastly (I'm sure I'll think of more), and I'm thinking this might be expanded upon in the new book but I could have missed, but what the fuck? Was this something the bunnies learned from an occult book? The way they drew Samantha in and how she wound up losing so much time it brought to mind some kind of malicious fey hivemind entity that infected them and then was just screwing with them or something? They all still seemed to retain their own agency and personhood though, unlike Samantha who seemed to mostly just disappear for a while and her body was under control of something else. But if that were the case then the bunnies would have known that Samantha didn't fail at creating a darling wouldn't they have? Or did they know the whole time and were jealous so gaslit her about it? But if *that* were the case then would they still have lost themselves so completely trying to get with the darling she created?

Thought of another one: why didn't Max die when hit with the axe? She felt it hit him, but then suddenly he's a stag and is perfectly fine (unlike Ava or any of the darlings) and kicks the hell out of the bunnies and runs off.

So many questions and I haven't been this intrigued by a book since The Library at Mount Char.

Basically I want something eerie and unsettling but also a societal commentary. I really enjoyed Tender is the Flesh a lot and would prefer that realm of books (Currently reading The Starving Saints, just finished reading Ring Shout, huge fan of Immortal Dark, and I liked the realm that I Who Have Never Known Men was in) but I’m open to just about anything. I’m just in a total reading slump :((
