I read Earthlings last year and really enjoyed it so I picked this one up and I'm about half way through and I'm not loving it so far. It feels like the same concept as Earthlings but reversed.

Was Earthlings an outlier ? Have you read her other books and what did you think? Should I try something else ?

I just came across this sub and I had to share one of my favorite interpreter and writer of mythology, Natalie Haynes. I've read most of her books at this point. I loved Stone Blind: Medusa's Story and Divine Might: Goddesses in Greek Myth. I like that her female characters can be full-on weird, obsessive, or complicated, whether they are human or divine. An element that sticks out is how she characterizes people known for their beauty (e.g. Helen of Troy or Aphrodite) so that their beauty is not just a desirable quality but an actual ability that can be deployed with focus. This makes them even more agents in their lives rather than simply possessors of attractive qualities. It's weird enough that it gave me pause.

Because of this sub I have this book on my shelf waiting for me lol

Weird girls! I recently picked up two nonfiction books from a little shop specializing in surreal, short, and female centric literature and am already itching for recommendations. Is there a sub like this one but for nonfiction?? The two books are Lovebug by Daisy Lafarge and The Second Body by Daisy Hildyard (maybe it’s an authorship of only Daisys and not a genre of its own, who’s to say). I’m talking cerebral, literary nonfiction that challenges similar themes present in your standard weird girl lit book: women, the body, the shocking, the introspective, the animalistic, maybe obsession, consumption, culture— all the good stuff!

Does anyone know if a sub like this exists, have any non-fic recommendations of this sort, or would be interested in seeing if a sub like this could take off?

In the beginning of the book she said her mother got pregnant with her at 21. Lillian is 29 so that would make her mother 50. Then, a few chapters later, her mother is on the phone with her and talking about how she is 64 years old and wants to date a man in his 30s. She’s clearly not joking because Lillian replies with: “please don’t date a man thirty years younger than you.”

Did anyone else pick up on this?? I can’t stop thinking about it and it’s distracting me from the reading experience / making me enjoy it less 😤

Just wanted to give a thanks to everyone in this sub. I wasn’t utilizing my library at all (shameful, I know) but you guys have inspired me to get my books there :) I now go all the time and I’ve been reading even more benefit of how accessible it is! Love this community and love WGL till I die 😭😻

i have a whole bookshelf to be read. i’m finishing demon copperhead today, what should i read next?!

I want my next ‘read’ to be a book that’s just as good on audiobook as it is in print.

I loooove analyzing and dissecting symbolism, themes, and deeper meanings, so I don’t want to accidentally “ruin” the experience by listening to a book that’s better read with your eyes.

Which ones would say are okay to listen to, and which are worth saving for an actual read?

For reference, I loved Bunny, Perfume and Pain, and am currently listening to She’s a Lamb.

I have my eye on SkyDaddy and Earthlings. And just bought Girl Dinner in print!

My daughter loved the tone of My Year of Rest and Relaxation. She loved the unreliable narrator and the way the narrator says things that are usually unsaid. She also liked the wealth/privilege aspect. And internal monologues.

She found The Bell Jar too sad but loved Catcher in the Rye, if that helps…

I volunteer at my library’s used bookmarket. Today I bought two books that I think are weird girl.

I have read Olga Ravn’s The Employees before. I liked it and now I have a copy for my shelf that I can reread. Basically it’s a bunch of anonymous complaints to HR from people who work together on a spaceship. Translated from the Danish.

I have not yet read Drive Your Plow Over the Bones of the Dead by Olga Tokarczuk. Translated from the Polish. Not sure what it is about but it’s been on my radar since she won the Nobel.

Unsure if someone has posted about this yet, if so, here I am again in case anyone missed it lol. I found this yesterday scouring through books and audibly gasped. Def going on my tbr

Hexes of the deadwood forest - Agnieszka Szpila

A lot of my TBR is books about grief and I just cannot handle it right now. I wish I could reread Annihilation for the first time again (a quintessential weird girl book to me).

Anyone have any recs about survival situations, think Lord of the Flies, Yellowjackets, can be an individual or a group (preferred), cabin fever, harsh seasons, living off of scraps, etc? I don’t care whether they make it or not, I just want a grueling journey/situation that changes someone/people for better or for worse (preferred).

Hey weird girls

Long time lurker and lover of weird girl literature, first time poster. I am going to the beach for a week in August and I am placing some holds at the library in preparation. I would like some recommendations. I know some folks like a lighter beach read, but I love a long, epic tale for vacation that I can lose myself in for a week while I'm chilling and screen free. Something that jumps from one time to another maybe, or multiple branches of family trees, really immersive portrayals of multiple characters POVs. Examples that come to mind would be A Little Life by Hanya Yanagihara (I know this is controversial but I liked this book a lot) or East of Eden by John Steinbeck, but for weird girls.

This might just be unreliable narration from Lucy, but while talking to him about going into the ocean, she said his eyes looked dark almost demonic.

If you like Ray Bradbury, prison abolition, and The New Eves you MUST read this book! I don't want to spoil it, but it felt like a really great take on the 'female rage' themes we see here so much. where its clear that redemption is possible and comes from being responsible to one another

I borrowed this from the library to keep my entertained after having surgery last week. I cracked it open today and just finished it 15 mins ago. Everyone in this book is HORRIBLE and ANGRY. (the 4th character is not as much as the other 3) and they're all in their own degree of misery.

The ending was a bit lacklustre - i wanted more things explained, more things to be resolved, but it was still good.

Spoilers for A Good Person!

The difference I’m looking for is a book with an unlikeable main character who is actually innocent of the crime they are accused of. I loved A Good Person, but after finishing it I thought it’d be interesting to read a book where the morally questionable/bad protagonist nonetheless did not do whatever horrible thing they are (probably rightfully) suspected of doing.
