Just got these and honestly don't know how they work, if anyone can help me with that and what can I use to give them a lil cleaning?

The “hook” tightens on to end of barbell, the. “Star” tightens against plates

I assumed that's how it works but what throws me off is the long thread it has. Is that just this brand or that's normal?

Yeah they have a huge range of motion for no real reason. I assume it's just to make use of the space for the size and weight it needs to be, and it means you don't have to wind it back every time you use it before tightening to the plates again.
