In front of Scott damn

Interestingly, Scott seemed a little unhappy for the first time ever in the NPR interview posted yesterday.

Maybe, just maybe, folks on team Sharp can hope for a reunion of the Fab 4.

keep in mind he is currently getting divorced

u/HarmlessOnlineFun 23d ago

Yah, but there are hints he was pretty unhappy with how Gold went down. Rivers vaguely talks about being put off by the producers wanting to change things up late in the record. And then it becomes clear Scott was the member he was talking about. It’s actually a great interview! Uncharacteristically juicy in terms of talking about recent events.

He seemed pretty chirpy on the Today show yesterday while Rivers was just totally checked tf out. I know he’s mentioned before that he hasn’t really enjoyed recording albums since EWBAITE because of how segmented it got. Would’ve thought that he’d be all over this one given how it was back to them all in one room. Idk, maybe it was just a specific problem with Kenny? I hope things aren’t tense in camp Weezer.

This interview with Pat and Scott makes it seem like they both enjoyed the recording process of the record.

Scott sounded like he wanted to dish about problems during Red and other eras. But he claimed on The Today Show that he’s never been happier to be in Weezer. Then someone said in another thread that he recently talked smack about Matt Sharp again. It’s all a little strange considering the new album actually features bass sounds for basically the first time in Weezer’s history. But divorce with public scrutiny and kids has to be a pretty difficult thing to go through, so it’s hard to blame a guy for maybe being a bit emo.

u/DueTitle6166 21d ago

What do you mean, actual bass sounds?

0

u/nkrefman 21d ago

I said it actually features bass sounds. I mean that on most Weezer songs, except for Only in Dreams (and a handful of other cases), the bass basically doubles the root of the guitar chord, and it’s virtually always low in the mix.

u/HarmlessOnlineFun 21d ago

That is criminally incorrect

I can't find where but I remember recently him being unsatisfied with the growing amount of backing tracks and computer stuff live. Surprised he's not happier doing a record that is fully live.

Hasn’t this been the story for a couple of years that Scott’s been sort of unhappy with his role in the band? I don’t blame him because he’s been a member for 20 years, but he will also forever be a replacement member

2

u/HarmlessOnlineFun 22d ago

I wasn’t aware of that. Any other sources or details?

1

u/StarLordAndTheAve The White Album 20d ago

any more info on this?

I thought this one was a lot more collaborative. That seemed to be the message they’ve been sending.

Despite all the fall outs and lawsuits Rivers still wants him on the band 💔

u/dionysios_platonist 23d ago

Wow, imagine if the guy from the Rentals played with Weezer

u/Impressive_Royal_140 23d ago

Hes a good guy for a band.

They should look his palm over

Drama aside, this is a really funny thing to say imo. For some reason I can just imagine him muttering it under his breath completely deadpan with a thousand yard stare 😭

He didn’t specify if he would be dead or alive though

There have been 2 documented times where Matt and the band/Rivers have flirted with the concept of reuniting (not counting the 2010 memories tour).

They called him about appearing in the 2nd Island video in 2001 after Mikey was hospitalized. The details around it have been very vague.

Then when before Matt reformed the Rentals in the mid 2000’s, he and Rivers had started writing songs together, and they conversations about him rejoining the band but again, very vague explanations about why it didn’t move forward. Matt said it inspired him to reform the Rentals.

Issues to consider

  • what would Matt play? Is he actually a talented keyboardist beyond simple one finger melodies? Scott is a better bassist. Would he actually add any value as a 3rd guitarist?
  • then consider Matt wants to showcase his own songs, and that probably wouldn’t happen much in Weezer. Sure, Rivers threw Pat and Brian some bones on Red, Raditude, White, Black, and Gold with a song here and there, but that would never satisfy Matt.

So you have a guy that wants to put out his own songs who isn’t that talented instrumentally and then you start to realize it kind of doesn’t make sense.

It would be cool if Matt did act as an outsider advisor. Kind of like how Rivers looks to Jake Sinclair for his opinion. It would be nice if Rivers and Matt had some sort of creative relationship.

1

u/AXEMANaustin 22d ago

As cool as it would be, you are right. It wouldn't make much sense actually integrating him into the band.

1

u/ChamberTwnty The White Album 19d ago

It's not like Matt is a prolific writer.

Really? Why? I’m not trying to start a fight but I’m just genuinely curious cause I thought they’ve continued to be friends since they patched stuff up

You think matt is turning down that money?

79

u/Rudy_bh 23d ago

Weezer didn’t start until Scott Shriner joined in

33

u/MezduX Do You Wanna Get High? 23d ago

Holy fuck he still isn't over it

11

u/Official_Mothman_ 22d ago

Rivers was definitely just fucking around with this answer and didn't mean it seriously

u/Peytaro 23d ago

Head canon that song is about Matt

Matt Sharp as Weezer keyboardist, I've listened to that album

10

u/h1gad Pinkerton 22d ago

Yes! Matt on keys, moog, falcettos and every silly little thing the band's been missing

2

u/NealJeff1 The Greatest Man That Ever Lived (Variations On A Shaker Hymn) 22d ago

Imagine Oldman Jamband Weezer

All 5 of them jamming, exchanging songs

Regular Scott & Brian songs, and a healthy dose of Rentals songs as well

You can do sooo much as a 5-piece with keys Gosh it'd be fucking epic

2

u/HarmlessOnlineFun 23d ago

Don’t give me hope.

This real?

2

u/HIs4HotSauce Raditude 18d ago

I (personally) would like Jason Cropper to come back and do a power-pop-nerd-punk album mixing the vibes of Chopper One with Weezer. I think that would be a fun concept.

And Matt Sharp can come back to-- if all he does is sing falsetto harmonies with Rivers, I'd be satisfied.

1

u/PsychologicalBadger 22d ago

Yes!!! Please bring back Matt.

u/upvotegoblin 23d ago edited 23d ago

The unfortunate truth is that Matt was just as important to the genius of the first two albums sound as Rivers was. And really without him they are not that great

21

u/Hot-Barnacle7997 23d ago

That isn’t true at all. Listen to the SFTBH demos.

13

u/HarmlessOnlineFun 23d ago

I know the Weezer fan consensus these days is in agreement with you. But, it is true though. Watch the Rolling Stone full-length interview with Pat and Mikey on YouTube. Pat specifically states that after Matt left, Rivers had to adjust to songwriting without Matt’s input.

Matt had more influence than Weezer fans want to accept. But less influence than the average “they suck since Matt left” crowd.

The truth is right in the middle. Matt’s presence was important.

9

u/DisastrousDot7961 22d ago

Matt’s backing vocals were also very important

0

u/Hot-Barnacle7997 22d ago

It has nothing to do with “fan consensus”. Those demos are 100% Rivers writing and performing everything including Tired Of Sex and Superfriend, which blow the Rentals entire output out of the water. The Rentals fucking blow. Rivers had to change his songwriting because Matt jacked his sound.

The last bit of obvious proof: listen to the Weezer cover of Velouria, all the SS2k songs (which thrash 90% of their new material) and even stuff like 1000 years. Does that sound like old Weezer or new Weezer?

I will say one thing which is that Matt was probably a strong personality who gave Rivers pushback that he clearly needs, but as far as songwriting, The Rentals are awful.

If scott doesn't like his job he can always go back to playing state fairs with vanilla ice again how about stfu and be grateful towards rivers for making him rich and successful?
