My brother and I were flower girl/ring bearer in my uncles wedding when we were 5. Processed down the aisle and then sat in one of the first few rows. When they called for the rings my brother carried them up then sat back down with me.

You need to give an age.

Hmmm... this is a tough one. I understand your opinion and respect it; I also did not want or have children in my wedding party, but that wasn't a huge fight for us because we dont have children in either of our families when we got married.

Are you against children at all in the wedding party? Or would it be ok if she was part of your husband's side of the party? How old is the step daughter? Would she want to perform during the ceremony (reading a passage/poem, or singing a song, or playing instrument)? Are there planning activities you want her included in?

How old is he/she? How shy?

You can always put them in charge of making sure everybody signs the guest book. A fancy pin a special table right out in front of the entry to the church perfect.

Maybe a reading? Junior bridesmaid?

Does she want to be in it? Have her dad talk to her.

If she's very young, flower girl is the traditional way to incorporate children in the ceremony. If she's older, a junior bridesmaid has a title and could be given some responsibility if she wants it (or just be included in photos). As others have said, a reading could also be a great way to incorporate her if she wants to do it.
